Airplane camping at Kern Valley, California with gusty winds!

  • I took my Grumman Tiger to go airplane camping at the beautiful campground of Kern Valley, California, located in the lower Sierra Nevada Mountains. The winds were gusty that day, making for a very sporty approach and landing. The airport is located a few miles south of the small town of Kernville and sits right next to the Kern River. It's a short hop from Los Angeles in the plane and feels like a world away. Airplane camping can be.a very rewarding experience and I highly encourage any pilots to go give it a try.

    I remember camping by the Kern river with my family when I was a kid. There's something about that place that just calms your nerves and brings peace to your soul.

    My first experience with landing at Kern Valley was in 1978 before the current runway and campground were built. We rented an old clunker for $10 and camped 10 miles upriver. The last time was July 4, 2019 and felt the Ridgecrest earthquake as we were packing up to go. We were surprised and delighted when we discovered the cafe had vegan options. Thanks for jarring some fond memories.

      Although my bike folds up pretty small, sometimes it's easier/faster to just lift it and go thru the canopy. When completely folded it BARELY fits thru the baggage door.

    My first airplane ride was out of Whiteman in 1953 in a Taylor Craft with a guy named Floyd, I was 5 years old. I knew quite a few folks from San Fernando and Whiteman Airports, great place to grow up. Scout Camp was above Johnsondale on a tributary to the Kern river, your video shows fewer trees. I suppose fire and the Bark Beetle are responsible. Your video brought back many memories. Thank You

    • @Wolficorntv
      @Wolficorntv  Před 3 lety +1

      It is and it's great! I will say that my particular ebike is pricey as I had specific needs (lightweight, foldable, good for both traveling and city commuting). It's called GoCycle and made in UK by the one of the former designers of McClaren cars. It only weighs 35 lbs (very light for ebike) and is very portable. I bought it about 4 years ago and the ebike space has blown up...so I'm sure there are probably some cheaper options that may work just as well. Check out electricbikereview.com/ for a very good breakdown of what's out there and in what category.

    Really great video! Loved the timelapse coming back into Whiteman! Is that the Insta360 One X2 you used for the interior shots while flying or a 360 camera with a better name? The Becki and Chris channel make great use of their 360 camera for these sorts of shots from their Robinson R-44. The effect of the inertial stabilization is fantastic.
