Thank you for your comments and support! I really appreciate it!
I have applied to different schools in my country and abroad three times. In total, this is about 30 colleges (you know, it sounds crazy).
The first time I was not accepted to Russia, then I was waitlisted and deferred at some colleges (including Harvard and Stanford), and finally I was accepted in two US universities with scholarships (in New York and Philadelphia).
It was still so expensive and difficult to go to study there. In the end, I reapplied to Russian universities and enrolled for free at the Moscow State University (top-1 in Russia) for a Journalism program.
So, I hope that my experience will be useful to you. Follow your dreams and never give up!

There is a famous quote by hockey great Wayne Gretzky, 'You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.' So, you took a shot at Stanford and missed but you did well with some of your others. I only applied to five universities and was accepted at all of them. I'm happy where I ended up but sometimes I think I could have raised the bar higher. It would have been interesting to apply to Sanford or Harvard even if I was rejected.

Well done on your acceptance by Moscow State. Keep focussed on your studies and hopefully geopolitical conditions will improve by the time you graduate.
Your candour is a big plus, especially in these challenging times.
A good reminder for us all that the citizens of any country aren't necessarily supportive of its foreign policies.

In such times and at your age it's best to finish what you've started. With the situation as it is in Moscow now, what will count is that you actually graduated. What situation and options you'll have after that is a different question, and nobody can answer it today. Good you did your gap year and the trip while it was possible 😊

Thank you for your support! Honestly, now I often think about transferring or dropping out due to the political situation (our faculty was also involved and affected) but it’s to difficult to move in now and people are not waiting for Russians, that is why the best decision is to comple my studies here.

@@NatashaFreshCreator I was afraid that you would be thinking about that, as it's natural to do so considering your surroundings. But even if you drop out and stay in Russia, it will be difficult to get any job and even if you get one, it's likely to vanish. To graduate and then look for better options afterward is the best you can to during this and next year.
Any European family has bad experiences with "mobilization", and the outcome is always bad to deadly for any individual person. I have a French "uncle" who got first mobilized at age 15 in 1916, survived that war only to be mobilized again in 1939. He was taken prisoner in 1940, starved in a German POW camp, "volunteered" to work as slave labourer on a German farm, and returned healthy to Paris in 1945. However, now he had no job, no money, no place to live and no income. Personally and financially, he never recovered from the two mobilizations. Many Russian families could tell similar stories, and the best is to lie low and let the storm pass, if you can.

I hope that when you graduate Ivan Safronov is free because until then there is no real journalism in Russia. I salute you for learning this important trade and I wish you success. Your country needs people who can tell the truth and hold powerful people to account. I believe in you.

I truly believe that better days are ahead for Russia. Yes, it won't be easy, but Botox grandpas don't live forever and reality is appearing to more people in beautiful shades of blue and yellow. Russia will be free and journalists will be celebrated. People like you give me hope.

MSU, that's great, well done, I did not like Harvard, it is really suffocating when you study there, I did not enjoy my time there much.
Oxford was very old fashioned and dry, but I liked MIT, and Yale. Purdue is a nice University.
You have to think about how the university will suit your personality and who will crush your spirit.
Thanks for sharing your journey, this is interesting.

It's understandable how at your age you concentrate on admission to famous universities. I'm the guy who did two gap years and got good jobs later in life 😁 I did travel as far as New Zealand, Egypt, India and China at your age. The winners are those people who do the trips and get the money as well 😎 People who show initiative at a young age are more likely to succeed later.
Among my friends for decades is one guy who graduated with a masters from Stanford, and spend years and years trying to find just a decent job. By age 55 he was yet again unemployed. Another one graduated with a PhD from Oxford, and never ever got a good job. With a good job I mean a place where he would earn half of what I earned.
I think you're now in the right place at such difficult times, and the best you can do for the coming years is to graduate there. Remember, that even if you had the money to pay for a foreign university, to transfer that money out of Russia this year and in years to come could be impossible.

Thank you for your comment! I was working during my gap year and I also thought about meaning of education degree. At that moment I didn’t have lots of experience in applying and I explored this process by myself. Now I understand that I was messed. But fortunately I found a place for myself. And now I also realise that I should have more work and life experience than just degrees.

    Hi Natasha,
I remembered that during Soviet times and even the 1990s, female university students in Moscow had to do a one or two week army training. They still have to that in China today. Did they stop this training at your university and at what time? During Soviet time this training was considered more of a joke, and everyone knew that such a training was basically useless. But times have changed, and today such soldiers would be considered as "experienced".

    • @NatashaFreshCreator
      @NatashaFreshCreator  Před rokem

Hello! Thanks for the question! We do not have military training, especially for women, only some faculties have a military department, but they are optional for students and there is a selection.
