  • [Episode 291]: Amidst the grand architecture and intricate stained glass of the Washington National Cathedral, artist Kerry James Marshall stands before an audience gathered for the unveiling of his new work “Now and Forever.” The stained glass windows the artist designed were commissioned to replace the Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson windows that were removed from the Cathedral in 2017. As Marshall addresses the crowd seated in the church pews, he reflects on his long career making images and the power of art to “invite us to imagine oneself as a subject and an author of a neverending story that is still yet to be told.”
Kerry James Marshall was born in 1955 in Birmingham, Alabama, and was educated at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, from which he received a BFA, and an honorary doctorate (1999). Learn more about the artist at: art21.org/kerryjamesmarshall

A very thoughtful artist and individual. His experience and knowledge on the topic of the church windows is appropriate, considering the previous window's history. Replacing hate with truth and optimism for better days ahead, shows the human race can overcome the brutality and evil of the past. I am glad that many who have commitmented are positive about the work, it shows people understand a universal truth. His work speaks to the viewer and attempts to reach out to them. Thanks for the video.

Ok Art 21, this is a very slightly better thumbnail than usual. There is a chance that this gentleman is a painter, which means that there’s a chance that I will click on the video. But imagine this, what if just from the thumbnail, we could understand what kind of painting he does? But maybe you’re thinking, “if we keep it mysterious, people will click just to find out.” Well, most of the time you would be wrong, and many of the people willing to gamble with their time like that won’t stay if they discover it is about a genre they aren’t interested in. As an example, if I were into realism, and he paints abstract, I’m clicking away immediately. If the viewer doesn’t stick around for the whole video it’s going to hurt your reach. We want to connect the audience that will enjoy the video the most, with the content, and we want this to be as easy as possible. When we are doom scrolling CZcams, we aren’t exploring, we are looking for easy pleasure, easy escapism, easy learning…you following me? Easy. Ok, now let’s address the title. While Now and Forever Extended play is fun and artsy, it tells us nothing. Except perhaps that even Art21 isn’t sure about the “title” because you added so many quotation marks, and secondly that it will probably be very long. Extended play. Extended from what? Imagine a title that describes the contents of the video. You can think of it as a promise. If I was buying cereal, and the outside of the box had no picture of the type of cereal which was inside the box, and it was named “not now, and unlikely to ever occur again” there is very little chance that an average person is going to pick up a box. Not to mention that even if it said “crunchy sugar flakes” I would be extremely suspicious of those quotation marks. The point I’m getting at is that even cereal boxes make promises and then deliver on them. Frosted Flakes generally have a picture of what a glamourized bowl of their cereal looks like right up front. The gamble is low, that I will open that box and discover Shredded Wheat. Imagine if the title of this video was GOAT of Black American Figure Painting Talks Process. Ok, now we are maybe interested. He’s the GOAT huh? And because we are now showing him in front of one of his paintings, and we can see the content of the painting, we can make the title even more simple. The GOAT Kerry James Marshall Talks Process. Or preferably, The GOAT Talks Process: KJM. Anyway, I think your content is important and amazing and I would really like to see it getting the reach it deserves. Maybe you are sitting on fat grants and you don’t give a hoot about viewership, but I wish you would.
