Totally agree! Knuckles is honestly my favourite character because I grew up with the classics, but seeing how they treat him now is super sad. He went from badass to dumbass.

The entire fight is one of my favourites in the series, mostly because of just, well, everything about the setup. You reach Sky Sanctuary, only to encounter the Egg Robo again, who just grabs you. Then the music stops, as the screen pans over to Mecha Sonic, who effortlessly destroys the Egg Robo right there and then. Now it’s just him and Knuckles, nothing else. And when he’s bested, he just powers up, making things even more tense. ALL WHILE ANGEL ISLAND ITSELF PRECARIOUSLY FLOATS, READY TO FALL AT ANY MOMENT IN THE BACKGROUND. Such a good finale.

Super forms were introduced one game ago, and now they're being used against you by a mechanical double of Sonic in a last ditch effort to take you out. And as the cherry on top, he's using the very gem that you've been using all game to transform. You have only 3 rings and have to end the last remnants of Robotnik's rule as the guardian of the island. This should be one of the most badass yet terrifying boss fights in all of gaming, but whenever people talk about it it's either "Huh. Yeah, that was neat." or its screaming about SMBZ. Don't get me wrong, SMBZ is awesome but it feels people never stop and appreciate how badass yet unique this moment is, especially for it's time.
They don't. There are probably only a handful of people in the entire fucking world that actually acknowledge Mecha Sonic as a character outside of SMBZ, and as such, he has been relegated to one of the most obscure characters in the entire franchise. Well put. Taking what had been established by that point as a player earned power trip and inverting it so that the player is on the receiving end of it is just a brilliant idea, full stop. Using the Doomsday Zone theme to drive that specific idea home is just as great, too. Everyone knows S3&K is great, but I really don't think the respective endgame sequences for both Sonic and Knuckles' stories get enough credit for how many good ideas they successfully employ for a series that was only three years old at that point.
Just shows how powerful Mecha Sonic is, and the amount of work Doctor Eggman put into creating him with no weaknesses. To utilise the environment around him as an advantage.
Go ahead, put Metal Sonic in as many titles as you want, but Mecha Sonic was an absolute meta of enemy. Beating it by playing as Sonic after being chased so much in Sky Sanctuary Zone felt nice. A kind of empty victory, but still good. Then, finding it by playing as Knuckles you would say it's easy, you know it attacks. And THEN it wakes back up. The music changes. It steps over the emerald that Knuckles is struggling to get back and it transforms. It turns what we most like, our greatest achievement in the game against us, into a nightmare that you just don't know how to counter (at least the very first time) and with only 3 rings! The fact that Mecha never appeared again, even for Generations really saddens me. S3&K is a MASTERPIECE.
It wasn't a mainline game, but Mecha Sonic did appear in Lego Dimensions along with Metal Sonic and Silver Sonic (who was referred to as "Robo Sonic" in that game) in a gauntlet boss battle against all three Sonic-type robots.

Metal Sonic kinda sucks. He's just.... average. Mecha Sonic was made for speed and combat, thus the sleek design, and Silver Sonic (sonic 2) was made for combat, thus the blocky but powerful design. Metal Sonic is just fast and he's really weak. We need the better Sonic robots back!

While mecha sonic was fighting knuckles who was able to knock the super out of super sonic. And if we are looking at both sonic and knuckles story mecha got hit almost 30 times before finally dying.
Simple yet masterful animation skills that make the limitations an asset, and a perfectly timed soundtrack that lets your imagination fill in the gaps and convinced you more is happening on screen than actually is. I'm always surprised when I rewatch this because child me distinctly remembers his eye flashing a lot brighter when he gets back up.
I always thought why people love this guy so much, he only appeared in one game. But he clearly left his mark. In one game Mecha Sonic showed us to be a better version of Sonic 2's Mecha Sonic, he was able to pilot the egg mobile and create his own plan to steal the master emerald, he absorbed it's power and became super. In ONE game, Metal Sonic did something like that but many games after his first appearence. Now I see why people like him.

I like how in the first phase he does almost the exact same moves as Silver Sonic from Sonic 2, but instead of charging forward at you, he boosts towards you while facing backwards so his spikes are going towards you. Kind of as if Eggman learned from Sonic's battle with Silver Sonic, and he changed Mecha Sonic's moveset a bit to be more effective.
The Sonic Encyclo-Speedia said that this Mecha Sonic is actually Mecha Sonic MK II, an upgraded version of the one from Sonic 2. So yeah, you're right.
I would like to point out that Mecha Sonic could keep the super form so long as he didn't expend the energy used to fire shots at you. Later on in the fight, he starts to stay in super form but flashing in and out of it, if he beat Knuckles he probably would have taken the Master Emerald, charged on that for a good while, then Eggman had a super form at his beck and call.
Never understood why Metal Sonic get's so much attention when we have such an epic boss like Mecha Sonic. He doesn't look like he is made out of a fan and you have to fight him while he is in super form. Glad that at least Lego dimensions remembered him but would be nice to see him get a comeback in an actual sonic game.
@Dylan Ogega Slower, definitely, but design-wise? He's definitely a lot cooler, and unlike Metal Sonic, you actually fight him, and you don't just fight him once, but you fight him TWICE. Technically, you fight him 4 times- Three times as Sonic, and once as Knuckles.
Dude, when he absorbed power from the Master Emerald and went super, I lost it as a kid, I was like "Are you serious? He's invincible now, how am I supposed to defeat him?" (since I managed to get all the chaos emeralds long before on my first playthrough I knew what super was and knew it made you invincible, not bragging though, the reason for me getting them all on my first is because I was stuck on Carnival Night Zone for like, 4 years of my life simply because I didn't know how to get passed "the dentures" just by pressing up and down, so I replayed the game like 100 times and found so many emerald rings I could get them all before Zone 4, I figured super might save me, but it didn't) Once I realized he could only transform temporarily, I was like, "Oh, I guess THAT'S how I beat him" I always felt like Knuckles was a badass after this fight so I find it weird no Mecha Sonic animations or stories, like SMBZ even mention Knuckles defeated him in his super form before.

Also I think it might be implied somewhere that canonically, Sonic fights Knuckles in his Super form (Not hyper, because hyper is technically not canon, I guess?) when he reaches Knuckles' domain. Plus when Knuckles is first introduced, he knocks Sonic out of his Super form. But yeah, no-one can technically beat a Super form unless they outlast it, at least inside the Sonic lore that is.

In the new series, however, the game canon is respected and Mecha is just one of the Sonic robots combined to form the new version of SMBZ Mecha Sonic: *Metallix*, who was originally going to be Mecha's perfect form once he got all 7 Chaos Emeralds.
This battle for me confirms that this is indeed the place that the "doomsday" song is written for and Sonic just happened to borrow this piece of music for his showdown with Eggman. I mean just listen how every time mecha Sonic goes on top of the master emerald and how nicely that "powering up" phase of the song fits into what mecha is doing. If this was a modern game, then i would think that this is just something they programmed the music to do according to what mecha is doing.

Fun fact, the more time you waste on the mecha sonic boss (as knuckles), angel Island keeps falling lower and lower. At 9:59, it disappears and you die.
I won't lie...when I first saw this fight as a kid...I thought my eyes were going to pop out of my head. I played the game first as Sonic (obviously) and Mecha Sonic wasn't the final boss. I thought it would be the same with Knuckles. And when he suddenly rushed towards the main emerald... I was like "wait what? You're not done yet?" And then he gets in super power form...and I was like "wait what? he can do that?" No other game on the Sega gave me such a shocking and unexpected feeling, followed by such a satisfying fight.
The only metal sonix to harnest the energy of the chaos emeralds into its own unique super form. Best part about it, is that eggman didnt program it to do that. Its AI is so complex it can adapt to any situation

I always imagined it to be like the MagnaGuards in Star Wars. They have a very similar design in that they have an extra Photoreceptor on their chest that can act as an extra eye for targeting.
I wonder if Metal Sonic fused with the remains of Mecha Sonic to become Neo Metal Sonic. The physique is not only similar, but it would also explain why "Metal Overlord" can use Chaos Control even without the assistance of the Chaos emeralds.
Damn, I still remember when I first fought this boss and thought he was the coolest of all the mechanical Sonics. When he turned Super, I was blown away.
I know that the original is the best based on popularity, but I would consider Mecha Sonic as the Best Version of Metal Sonic, because he is the ONLY Version of Metal Sonic who has used the Master Emerald in the Entire Series *and he uses the same rings you collect, as Fucking bullets... Looks like Mecha Sonic is first Sonic based robot that managed to gain an Super form. Also Mecha Sonic is only character that he cannot stay Super for long. He needs Master Emerald again to another charge up.
Isn't it odd that this is the only robotic duplicate of Sonic that has a super form? Not even Metal Sonic has one... I mean unless you count Metal Madness and Metal Overlord, which is a bit of a stretch in my mind.
Metal Madness and Overlord aren’t super forms just a full on new form for Metal. Metal (in CD) was just made to be a racing robot and then made into an evil robotic version who can do things Sonic can but Mecha Sonic from Sonic 2 and 3&K was made to be closer to Sonic with his looks and movesets.

Scourge, Sonic’s evil twin in the comics, basically says, while he’s in his super form, that he’ll spindash his planet in half “because he can.” There’s a lot more to that, and whether you take the comics as canon or not is up to you, but hey, that information’s there. It’s pretty sick, too.

Mecha sonic is my favourite boss from the classics! If I'm not mistaken knuckles story takes place after sonic and tails, mecha servives after being beaten first by sonic in sky sanctuary but comes back with a few egg robots to take the master emerald himself. Such a neat little after story that i never picked up on as a kid! Good job sega of old👍

I would like to point out that Mecha Sonic could keep the super form so long as he didn't expend the energy used to fire shots at you. Later on in the fight, he starts to stay in super form but flashing in and out of it, if he beat Knuckles he probably would have taken the Master Emerald, charged on that for a good while, then Eggman had a super form at his beck and call.

Never understood why Metal Sonic get's so much attention when we have such an epic boss like Mecha Sonic. He doesn't look like he is made out of a fan and you have to fight him while he is in super form.
Glad that at least Lego dimensions remembered him but would be nice to see him get a comeback in an actual sonic game.

@Dylan Ogega Slower, definitely, but design-wise? He's definitely a lot cooler, and unlike Metal Sonic, you actually fight him, and you don't just fight him once, but you fight him TWICE. Technically, you fight him 4 times- Three times as Sonic, and once as Knuckles.
Dude, when he absorbed power from the Master Emerald and went super, I lost it as a kid, I was like "Are you serious? He's invincible now, how am I supposed to defeat him?"
(since I managed to get all the chaos emeralds long before on my first playthrough I knew what super was and knew it made you invincible, not bragging though, the reason for me getting them all on my first is because I was stuck on Carnival Night Zone for like, 4 years of my life simply because I didn't know how to get passed "the dentures" just by pressing up and down, so I replayed the game like 100 times and found so many emerald rings I could get them all before Zone 4, I figured super might save me, but it didn't)
Once I realized he could only transform temporarily, I was like, "Oh, I guess THAT'S how I beat him"
I always felt like Knuckles was a badass after this fight so I find it weird no Mecha Sonic animations or stories, like SMBZ even mention Knuckles defeated him in his super form before.

Technically, Knuckles didn't defeat Mecha Sonic in his super form. He defeated him by attacking him when his super form wore off.

Also I think it might be implied somewhere that canonically, Sonic fights Knuckles in his Super form (Not hyper, because hyper is technically not canon, I guess?) when he reaches Knuckles' domain.
Plus when Knuckles is first introduced, he knocks Sonic out of his Super form.
But yeah, no-one can technically beat a Super form unless they outlast it, at least inside the Sonic lore that is.
@@Gogetossj50 Actually, it's the same robot. In the original series Alvin basically retconned Mecha Sonic's game canon history and made him the combo form of all the other Sonic robots. In the new series, however, the game canon is respected and Mecha is just one of the Sonic robots combined to form the new version of SMBZ Mecha Sonic: *Metallix*, who was originally going to be Mecha's perfect form once he got all 7 Chaos Emeralds.

This battle for me confirms that this is indeed the place that the "doomsday" song is written for and Sonic just happened to borrow this piece of music for his showdown with Eggman.
I mean just listen how every time mecha Sonic goes on top of the master emerald and how nicely that "powering up" phase of the song fits into what mecha is doing.
If this was a modern game, then i would think that this is just something they programmed the music to do according to what mecha is doing.

Even the way the battle starts is amazing, Knuckles literally tricked Mecha into destroying Egg Robo, taking care of him for good.

When you finally here the Doomsday Zone, you know there’s something about to happen.
I won't lie...when I first saw this fight as a kid...I thought my eyes were going to pop out of my head. I played the game first as Sonic (obviously) and Mecha Sonic wasn't the final boss. I thought it would be the same with Knuckles. And when he suddenly rushed towards the main emerald... I was like "wait what? You're not done yet?" And then he gets in super power form...and I was like "wait what? he can do that?" No other game on the Sega gave me such a shocking and unexpected feeling, followed by such a satisfying fight.
I was impressed that Mecha Sonic achieved a Super State, but I didn't expect that he pilot Robotnik's Egg mobile.
This got a lovely reference in Sonic Mania Adventures 5, plus Metal finally (kinda) got a Super form!

The only metal sonix to harnest the energy of the chaos emeralds into its own unique super form. Best part about it, is that eggman didnt program it to do that. Its AI is so complex it can adapt to any situation

Isn't it odd that this is the only robotic duplicate of Sonic that has a super form? Not even Metal Sonic has one... I mean unless you count Metal Madness and Metal Overlord, which is a bit of a stretch in my mind.
Metal Madness and Overlord aren’t super forms just a full on new form for Metal.
Metal (in CD) was just made to be a racing robot and then made into an evil robotic version who can do things Sonic can but Mecha Sonic from Sonic 2 and 3&K was made to be closer to Sonic with his looks and movesets.

apparently super forms are capable of that though. Scourge, Sonic’s evil twin in the comics, basically says, while he’s in his super form, that he’ll spindash his planet in half “because he can.” There’s a lot more to that, and whether you take the comics as canon or not is up to you, but hey, that information’s there. It’s pretty sick, too.

Mecha sonic is my favourite boss from the classics! If I'm not mistaken knuckles story takes place after sonic and tails, mecha servives after being beaten first by sonic in sky sanctuary but comes back with a few egg robots to take the master emerald himself. Such a neat little after story that i never picked up on as a kid! Good job sega of old👍
Mecha Sonic is better than Metal in terms of design. Mecha could've been a excellently developed character. Let's hope he returns in the future.
