  • The Canna Leaf Roller can cause extensive damage to your Canna leaves. These caterpillars start to feed on the underside of the leaf and web leaves together with silk strands. They then continue to disseminate your leaf and then pupate within the rolled leaf and emerge as a moth. The life cycle is the complete within 40 days.
    Easy options as to how to eradicate this pest.

    I get these in Kansas on my cannas and my brassica plants my vegetable garden. I use Bacillus Thuringiensis. I just can’t get them under control manually. BT is a natural bacteria in soil so it’s safe for plants and other animals. It’s even safe on edible plants.

      Oh no! Ann try to find an organic pesticide for chewing insects. The problem is that there is a 40 day cycle. Try to nip it at the bud. Thanks for following our channel.

    What do you spray the roots with ? I never dug my lilies for the winter but might dig them up early spring spray and replant

    • @redsoilgardener
      @redsoilgardener  Před rokem

      I actually only use Neem spray on all my plants, as its a fungicide, pesticide etc. The reason being its organic and not harmful to pets. And I have my little babies ( dogs) who constantly forage in the garden.
      We did an episode three weeks ago on Neem oil. Have a look at it.

    I do not love caterpillars and they actually move really really fast!!! When I find them, they jump right off and disappear into the dirt

      Hi Alice👋😀 from Virginia,USA...I was wondering, since I have a 4x12 ft. raised garden box, if I could just cut my Cannas back instead of digging them up and storing them?

  • @stephanietownsend2771

    Can you unroll the leaf

    • @redsoilgardener
      @redsoilgardener  Před rokem

      Hi Stephanie, with regards to the leaf roller you could unroll it, and get rid of the moth larvae. But it really depends on stage of infestation. If it's not critcal then I would suggest cutting off the infested leaves and get rid of them , not in the compost. However, if it's critical there pesticides that solely attack caterpillars. In this case, they may affect your pollinators. When spraying I would remove the Canna flowers when using these pesticides in order to save the bees etc.

    why are you not mentioning spraying insects with a mild soapy water? Have you really never tried this? Curious.

    • @redsoilgardener
      @redsoilgardener  Před rokem +2

      Hi Bec, many of these insects such as the mealy bug or aphid can be eradicated by using a mixture of mild dish washing liquid mixed with water. I do use this method. However, if the infestation is overpowering then I use the commercial products.

      Please dont get rid of your Cannas. The leaf roller once the catapillar evolves into a moth it flies away. Send me a message stating what wrong with your cannas, with photo and lets see how to rejuvenate your Cannas
