  • To Overland Morocco means to get off the road lesser travelled. Continuing our epic journey north beyond the Dades Gorge we have to cross Morocco's mighty High Atlas Mountains.
    But with little local knowledge and our chosen route an unknown quantity, we had more questions than answers which only fueled Izzy's anxiety levels... Would we fit?
    Was the track passable?
    Would it snow?
    Would we make it?

    Kerry is the same as Izzy, she isn’t keen on the narrow tracks with long drops, she actually hangs on to the door just like Izzy 😂. Oh and clean your solar panels ☀️ 👍🏻

      Hi guys,
      LOL, I must tell Izzy 🤣. The never ever ending job of cleaning solar panels, it's the dust here that you just can’t win against, just as well there’s plenty of ☀️ 😀
      Enjoy your time back in Georgia. 🙏😀

    Absolutely awesome taking on that track in your truck, just the sort of really courageous spirit I like to see. Well done guys, I would love to do that myself one day. Take care Simon.

      I should say, she needs no encouragement 🙏😁

    The whole point of carrying a house, if at worse you have to parkup for a bit. Truck was made for that road, crack on still well within the capabilities - which makes it very safe.

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  Před rokem

      Hi Kev, good to hear from you - I'm sat here laughing 😆
      I know that, Izzy (in theory) knows that but when her little voice of anxiety shows up... the irrational side of her comes to the fore - so it's then down to me to manage 😀
      The funny thing is, she'll look back over the footage and say "what was I concerned about" 😫
      That truck can do so much more but the limiting factor is Izzy, but she is getting better. 🙏😀

    The lady was nervous. (I like to see my wife like that when I also take dangerous paths.) The road is excellent, and the truck is short and good. Trust me, this kind of road is sometimes more dangerous for bikers than for people with cars or small trucks.

      Hi thanks for the comment,
      As a biker, I get it. I've been fortunate to ride Adventure bikes on many continents and
      Izzy kept saying to me, "I bet you wish you were on a bike" and yes of course.
      You’re so right, having a short wheel base helps although some of the corners were hairy enough with the rear wheel on the crumbling edge. 🙏😀

    Absolutely with Izzy on that drive, I too would be clutching the seat. I admire your driving skills and you certainly appeared to have the best vehicle for negotiating that road over the mountain.
    I enjoyed your sum up / review of the day. As you say, one to remember. And you have left us with a cliff hanger (pun intended) for your next vlog. 😮

      Cheers Peter, it was such an incredible day and one I'll remember with a smile. I think that's why we enjoy Morocco so much, the option to enjoy the coast and the many tourist attractions but equally get off the beaten track/desert for that sense of adventure. 🙏😀

  • @livingworkingoutsidebox

    Great to see your progress as you travel 👍 Izzy is getting so much better. The world 🌎 is so big and so small at the same time. Very cool that you crossed paths in the middle of nowhere. 🛠👍

    I was impressed with your bravery taking that heavy truck on loose stones, especially at 1:45. I would have been uncomfortable at being the heaviest vehicle to go along that track in some time.
    Your videos are reminding me of some of my own hairy driving experiences in Morocco.

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  Před rokem

      Hi Paul, yeah there’s always a risk particularly when your heavy and those corners were hairy enough, my rear tyres were right on the edge... we've got a pretty good turning circle and thankfully it proved to be an epic day.
      It's really hard to beat Morocco for that sense of adventure, just a stone’s throw from Europe.
      Cheers Paul 🙏😀

    I’ve seen 2 CZcams vids recently where they turned back on that road, travelling the same direction as you guys. Admittedly both trucks were I think longer wheel base than yours. One of them was very very upset after being led up there by their “tour guide” after repeated comments about fear of heights and drop- offs.
    I’ve been waiting to see if you guys could do that track, well done to you both.

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  Před rokem

      Hi Rob,
      Thank you, we had heard various reports from fellow overlanders, some of which said don't do it or weren’t prepared to risk turning back.
      Sometimes it's the fear of the unknown that’s worse than the actual event/track and although Izzy wasn’t exactly thrilled, we thankfully decided to go for it.
      There were a number of times the rear wheel was right on the crumbling edge of a tight bend, so yeah the shorter wheelbase and good turning circle definitely hepled.
      These are definitely the days you remember. 🙏😀

    Just found your channel, really interested in this Morocco tour as I’m off there myself next year, all be it on motorbikes, we’re doing that very same track too, but staying in Agoudal, how long is the gravel track roughly? Thanks, new sub too😎👍

      Hi and thank you,
      First off I'm envious 😁, this road on a bike will be superb.
      It's an easy, non-technical 18km ride (gravel), although it'll be fun if the tracks wet, but still very doable.
      There's lots of others in that area, Enjoy 👍🏻☺

      @@TheGapDecaders argh that’s not to long then, was thinking it was more like 20 miles, thanks for the prompt response, really enjoying this series, lots of information coming my way, Gara Medouer is another one that ive learnt about from you guys, Thanks😎👍

    Why do you have different tyres on front and rear axle? XZL on rear, can't tell what you have on front though

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  Před rokem +1

      Hi and good question - We always run XZL's but last year we had a tyre nightmare, we had a rear blow out in Spain, on a bend at speed which was a scary experience particularly on super singles (loads of tread but old).
      This prompted us to rotate and replace the front's with the new tyres but with supply post pandemic we couldn’t get XZLs for six weeks and we had a boat booked in two as we were heading to Azerbaijan.
      We could get Dunlop's which the Spainish fire service use on their Iveco 4x4's which have the same speed rating but higher load rating so we opted for them.
      We have changed the other two plus the spare for XZLs since but in some country’s you need special permission as it's deemed a military tyre (this happened in Turkey with our spare).
      We just couldn’t get one in Greece anywhere and it was only because we were having work done at a MAN dealership in eastern Turkey and the boss was prepared to sign it off and explained why - even then it was a special order and took 8 days.
      So as you can imagine, it was an expensive year.... I'm surprised nobody’s asked before now, good spot 🙏😀
