    By popular demand, here is my long-winded first-time reaction and analysis for VoicePlay's Wicked A Cappella Medley! Ye be warned, since the original video is over 7 minutes long, it only makes sense that my analysis was so long that my camera decided to stop filming after 30 minutes (apparently that's a thing) 😅Anyway, they did a truly wonderful job capturing some of the most iconic tunes from the musical theater world -- I hope you enjoy!

    Geoff and Layne arrange for VP about 50/50. Eli did one too actually: Eleanor Rigby, and it's delightful. Emoni sang The Bones with VP when Earl had left.

    • @moniqueakar484
      @moniqueakar484 Před 2 lety +8

      Of your last few reactions: Hoist the Colours Geoff, Halo Layne, Wicked Geoff, Friends on the Other Side Layne, If I were a Rich Man Layne. Geoff's arrangements tend to be a bit more lyrical, and he has Layne singing baritone not just beatboxing. Layne's arrangements tend to be a bit more rhythmically complex and Geoff ends up doing amazing impossible runs and painted odd colors. Not a perfect way to tell the arrangers apart, but is a starting place. Having two such skilled arrangers in one group is astounding. The little bit of arranging by Eli make me want to hear more. Eleanor Rigby is brilliant, and the Dr. Who mini was a delight.

    • @cmz90

      @@moniqueakar484 Didn't Eli also write the arrangement for Carry On Wayward Son? Agree that having just one outstanding arranger is amazing (and we, the audience benefit), but VoicePlay is blessed with multiple talented arrangers.

    Rachel and some of the guys in the group sang for Disney, she also understudied for the Glinda role on the 2nd national tour for Wicked and also was on Broadway for The Addams Family as Wednesday, among other productions. Emoni is just amazing. When they were singing Popular, the backing vocals were singing Emerald City. I think the section before Gravity is Geoff's own arrangement, it's actually the same song as Gravity but in the show, it's spoken. Gravity is sung last in Act 1 and For Good is toward the end of Act 2 - Voiceplay flipped the two. As always, cool reaction.

    Emoni was on the Sing-Off Season 4 as part of group named Ten. That's the same season as Home Free and Voice Play. The interesting thing about Ten was that the group formed to be on the Sing-Off and had never performed together before that. The singers in the group were all background singers before getting together. I found it interesting to watch their journey on the Sing-Off as they found their identity as a group.

    Wicked especially is a show where there's not a lot of variation and coloratura in performances! They're so strict to going by the book on that show, that this arrangement is absolutely fascinating. There are so many cool moments in it, I really love the way the soloists adapted their sections. Great, great video. Also, for more on the Broadway area, I would love to hear your reaction to something from Hadestown with Patrick Page. How Long or Hey Little Songbird would be incredible bass songs to hear

    Wonderful break down as usual. I'm glad you acknowledged the amazing perc by Layne in defying gravity which pretty much all of the other reactors failed to catch in the midst of everything else going on. He and Geoff blew my mind with how good that sounded. Thank you for what you do.

  • @Aurora-cv5to

    Geoff and Layne have each done almost exactly 50% of the videos. (I got obsessive one day while trying to figure out why I always know which one arranged before I check. I still don't have a clue how I tell them apart, but it became easy to count and see who does "most." And the answer was - neither, they're equal (if you eliminate the recent flurry of shorts from Layne) Layne, however, almost always does the medleys, so this is an unusual choice here.
    Emoni also sang in The Bones, and if you haven't yet heard that one, you should. It was the second of the two they did right after Earl left, and both arguably sound like they were a response. (The 1st was The Heart of Life)
