  • Underlying Oregon’s bounty is an ingredient we often overlook, but is key to the state’s food systems: soil. Oregon is home to some of the most diverse soils in the world. It’s more than dirt, it’s the literal history of the land, a record of volcanic explosions and massive glacial floods, tracing all the way back to the origin of all matter in the nuclear furnaces of ancient stars. It’s also a fascinating ecosystem all to itself, infused with mind-boggling numbers of worms, microbes and fungal mycelial networks that we are only beginning to understand. Put it all together and you get the almost magical substance that's crucial to making Oregon's hops, berries, wine grapes and other crops famous around the world.

Absolutely loved this engaging presentation on soil! Thank you Super Abundant team for producing this. Sadly, it's a topic that too few people know anything about. Without healthy soil there is no sentient life on planet earth.

Geology is a worthy study and it's within the grasp of most who are willing to take the time.

We can’t create more land but we can create better soil.

Ok, I’m a native Oregonian. I’ve adored OPB since I could sit upright and clap my tiny hands at the Captain Kangaroo show. Oregon is indeed amazing in SO many ways!! But I cannot take credit away from an all-knowing Creator who made this world… on purpose! Besides the evolution hooha, I will agree this is a fascinating episode. Thank you, God Almighty, for blessing every region of your planet earth with breathtaking and awe-inspiring wonders on which we thrive! 🙏🏼💗🙌🏼 🌎 I ❤️ OREGON!

You missed the centuries upon centuries of care and stewardship by the native people of our state who were responsible for the supreme condition of our soils when European settlers arrived.

I live in Oregon and our soil sucks. I have to buy bagged soil from Home Depot…
