Caroline, those little cones on the log, they look like they're from an alder tree.
The plant that you thought looked like a salvia is Hedge Woundwort, which is a Stachys, related to the mint family.
A fantastic hillside lark. You certainly had to work for some of the amazing finds. Our favourite was the very small bottle.
