I really wish there was a pokemon game where after you beat the main story you could become a gym leader and go to your gym whenever you want just to await challengers. Being able to theme your own gym and pick a type would be awesome and having some genuine challenge after the elite four would be a nice change of pace.

Kyle Harbeck It is free. I downloaded it on his request and it kicks ass. It is much more difficult than a standard pokemon game however.

Im currently playing through Pokemon Insurgence , the second game made by suzerain , which is still a WIP (Only 5 gyms till now) , but is constantly updated with newer releases on their subreddit , if you want a complete game go for zeta/omnicron else if you want newer features and stuff insurgence is great
I always thought it would be cool if in the game your father was kept in secret the entire time, but, he ends up being the champion.

I always thought a theme instead of a type would be awesome in gyms. Like a knight who uses a Salamence and Escavalier, or a soldier who uses Octillery and Forretress.

Isa Flores Galar is based on Britain so the English Pikachu might originate there. Just like how his French Pikachu might originate in Unova.

One of my favorites is Jasmine, her team is badass and she is one of the few leaders to actually do things for her town. I think the gym leaders are essentially town mayors and she's one of the few that gets involved in her town.
I can't help but imagine Blane wearing a Foxy Grandpa t-shirt on his days off.
lol when JWittz said "Whose your daddy? Norman's your daddy!" that is true for me! My dad is named Norman (Norm for short)! So whenever i start a fresh game in Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald i always choose the female protagonist of the game, name her Kenzie (cause my real name is Mackenzie and my actual dad calls me Kenzie) I do that with my character to make it feel more realistic to me when i play the game! :D

i lost to whitney like, 80 times because of that miltank...
i only lost 2 times, but it felt like a thousand. because of miltank. but when i beat her, this made me believe more in my onix. because rock slide trumps milk drink which trumps dig.

The point of having gym leaders with certain types is to get players to diversify their teams by the time they reach the elite four (:
Roxie's spirit is unparalleled and even though she is kind of easy, she is amazing as a character. She also gets way more competent in her rematches. The messages she gives about rebelling against the norm are very important. She is the only character who has ever touched me as a player. By comparison, this entire list is comprised of cool trainers who did cool things. That's... about it.
I absolutely hated how Claire threw a bitch fit when you beat her. She was just sooooo entitled. It's pretty silly to complain about pixels, I know, and especially in a series that I love, but when I get to Claire in game, I always get so frustrated because she basically calls you bad even though you just beat her.

Blaine’s original design in concept art for Red and Blue had him in military attire, but this was changed to a lab coat so he couldn’t be as easily confused with Lt. Surge. The concept art also helped inspire his design in the anime
"Crushing an entire team with one type advantage" Meanwhile, I beat Winona from Gen 3 with one Vigoroth who could only deal damage with Focus punch and rocksmash. Proudest pokemon I've ever had the pleasure to train.
Would have loved to hear about Jasmine, I always thought she was really interesting.Especially her dedication to the Ampharos in the Lighthouse, and her unexplored past training Rock types before switching to Steel.Also Morty, the man just oozes with mystery.
Am I the only person who didn't have a hard time with Whitney's battle?
I didnt, and I was a kid who just agressively killed stuff with my starter, totodile in that game
I used a female Heracross on Whitney. That thing took her down with three brick breaks

It was easy for me.
However, Morty was so annoying to me.
It is a french pikachu because the pokemon war is world war 2. in pokemon x and y, they talk about a pokemon war. This could mean that kalos (france) and kanto (japan) were at war with each other. It would also make sense that unova (america) was part of the war, due to the war with terrakion, virizion, cobalion, and keldeo. This is most likely to be WWII because of all of these wars.
can you also tell which place is HOENN and SINNOH

My favorite is Clay from gen 5. He actually gets out and drags Team Plasma away himself, builds up the entire city he's based in, and apparently has connections with every other gym leader and champion to get them to come to his tournament.

Here's how I beat Whitney:
I used rage with my croconaw on clefairy again and again until it was max.
Milktank came out.
Milktank locked into rollout so it couldn't heal (lol).
I two hit it.
My croconaw was so overleveled.
You came in overleveled which is what most noobies wouldn't do because falkner and bugsy are just too easy. She definitely deserved her reputation.
Whitney's Milta- OH GOD THE GOLDENROD GYM FLASHBACKS! >_< Attract! Rollout! Stomp! Stomp! Stomp! So much flinchiiiiiiiing!

An awesome way to beat the Miltank of Death in Crystal is, buy a Wobbuffet at the Game Corner, and once it's gotten up a few Rollout uses, bring in Wobbuffet. One good Counter and Miltank is down in one hit.

Volkner being bored does not make him emo and in the anime he was so cool. He is just striving for more in the games because battling has become boring to him, like when your training in the grass. We all know the feeling of boring battles. Volkner was thinking of taking on the E4 and Elisa wins because SuperModel, which is great and all but I feel Volkner should join her on this list.

She's strangely negligent with her Gym. According to BW2, people have gotten injured in Mistralton Gym.
LT Surge has a French Pikachu because in all other languages it was an American Pikachu, put there to unlock its English pokedex entry. An American Pikachu in an English game wouldn't be foreign...
what if Lt. Surge's pikachu is french because it is from Kalos, which might mean that he took part in the WAR between Kalos and the other region??? :O

My favorite Gym leader has to be Valerie. She's cute, into Fashion, completely wrecked my Dragon/Dark/Fighting team, and wears those horrible contact lenses that make her eyes look empty and devoid of a human soul.

My first game was a used Sapphire. Unfortunately, I was a complete newbie who had no idea how types worked... so I had trained up a Pelipper... then, I met Wattson... *shudders*... then, in my brilliance, decided to train up a Gulpin/Swalot to fight him, when he had a Magneton... *slams head against wall*.

my favourite is volkner. the dude is so powerful he gets bored of beating all his challengers. and then decides to remodel his entire gym. not to mention he uses my third favourite type, and he has an awesome design

I played blue on pokemon stadium and choose charmander but also load and lv20 evee from stadium so i had no problema at all, then evolve evee to jolteon at the end
I remember beating Brock's Onix with Pikachu in Pokemon Yellow.

I don't remember having trouble with Brock but Misty sure as hell a challenge. I had to be sent back to the Pokemon Center over and over and over. The only reason I won in the first place was because Misty used X Defend when I would've been defeated. That was the greatest moment ever.

For kids she is hard to beat (myself included when I was one). I played it again during my late teenage years and beat her no sweat. I mean if you beat her when all you cared about is attacking with no tactics then I guess you were lucky that you beat her on your first try.
I have this conspiracy theory where all the Electric Gym Leaders are related. Lt. Surge is the father, Volkner is the son, Elesa is the cousin, Clemont and Bonnie are the younger siblings and Wattson is the grandfather. Also they all have blond hair, except Elesa in Black and White 2 and Wattson, he probably had blond hair when he was younger though.

sabrina- one of my best memories was finally beating her after grinding so much to get my pokemon high enough. shes interesting, and was the first really challenging gym leader for me. thats my reason for wanting her on this list.

Joseph Brooks and if you don't have psychics, use special attacks, at least on Koffing and Weezing.
Maybe Surge has a French Pokemon because he fought in a war and Nintendo/Game Freak was referencing World War 2 or creating some kind of parallel between World War 2 and a Pokemon war

You should also do top 10 Elite Four members JWittz :) also my favorite gym leader is Jasmine because to me she's the most caring Gym Leader not battling until you help her nurse a Pokemon back to health then that Steelix... When I first played Silver that Steelix made my jaw drop because I had never seen something as cool as it before :) and it's tough to take it out

the fact that all gym leaders (except blue) are type-themed is something i never realized before.
pokemon can easily move onto different kinds of themed gym leaders, like themes based on appearance (ex: cute, tough), themes based on habitats (grassland, jungle, mountainous), themes based on colour, size, lore, etc....

I think the fact that Lt Surge has a real back story makes him pretty interesting. I also like the contrast between his macho design and his adorable pokemon (Pikachu and Raichu). He is secure in his manliness and will use speed/agility instead of pure brawn.

Oh God, finally! Someone who have the same fate as me! Lost to her several time because my starter is Piplup, need to grind for like two freaking hours and THEN I can beat her. So freaking annoying...
What about Misty? Her water Pokemon were great, and with Charmander as a starter I found her difficult to beat! Even with a pikachu. I guess it's her Starme's constant use of "Recover" that made it hard for me. Oh well.

I like how in black and white, every gym leader ends up helping you through the game in one way or another. Except for the Striaton leaders. They don't do anything.
AH, MORTY! man, he's my fave!! so... badass.. ghost types so early in the game? talk about tough if you don't have 'bite' orr stacked levels (which I did c:) but as a kid having no walkthroughs it was difficult to catch on to his gym puzzle at first. also, his gengar. so cool! like Lt. Surge and his Raichu
I like how you mentioned the difference between Sabrina in the anime and the video game... if this list were to include the tv show, she would be my number one... because ghost pokemon are the shizznit. I even have a buddy of mine who has gengar, haunter and gastly tattooed on his arm!

Nathan Chen I know that. but I think Unova could actually be in that world's America ;p Since I think it's revealed that the other Regions are in other countries as well.
You're both wrong, Castelia and Nimbasa are collectively based off of New York City, the rest of Unova is based off of the surrounding areas of New York.

I liked Koga's Gym because it wasn't really a Poison Type Gym as much as it was a Poison Status Gym. There were a lot of Psychic Pokémon there too and they mostly focused on causing status effects more than sticking to a type thematic. ^^

A lot of these leaders had pretty though teams as well. The milltank, the dragonites, that Raichu (whitney, claire, Surge.) And the clusterfuck of poison, burning,seeding and sleeping status effects that Koga and especially his daughter gave you!

For me I always thought Brawly represented a really cool challenge and even cooler gym leader (surfer dude!). 2nd in Hoenn, his Makuhita & Machop combo was freakin tough!
Tate and Liza were also cool and unique
I've been through a lot of gym leaders but there's no one like the first.. which in my case, is Faulkner from Violet City. I remember getting frustrated as a child as his Pidgeotto keeps managing to land sand attacks on my Totodile, making it lose accuracy, and ultimately, have its attacks miss, and beat me using Gust. I was then convinced that Gust must have been a very strong attack. Ah, the good old days.

Gotaa feel bad for kanto trainers wanting to take on the pokemon league post red and blue's plot. They have to beat a former champion to even get a shot. Talk about intimidating.

Design wise, my favorite is the Yellow Flash of the Pokemon world/4th Hokage/Volkner. He's freaking awesome! ^_^
