really did love the shin/rebuild series as it made me actually care fully for the characters(that weren't only misato),felt like anno confronting his past & doing his story now with a happy content with life breath giving the characters.
especially shinji(that actually made me cheer for the kid when i saw it in theaters seeing him get an apology/closure with gendo seeing his parents farewell,the pilots be reborn to form new healthy relationships,kaoru/misato/kaiji possibly reborn or at least peacefully reunite and forming a new life with mari going into our world.:3) the happy ending they long deserved(that compared to other gainax stars like simon didn't get a bitter screwover.) getting to finally live their lives in a satisfyingly sweet goodbye for it,the series and anno finding his own happiness that he's not alone.
Despite how torn the fandom is about this movie, I'm just happy this dude finally found the happiness he's been looking for so long 😌

I wanted an ending that was very similar to End of Eva but way more clear and satisfying
Rei showed that we’re not supposed to fall for/be with someone who’s like our mother.
Asuka showed you don’t end up with someone just because you’ve bonded over similar traumatic experiences.
Mari shows what happens when you finally be yourself and let in whoever you’re meant to.

All of this is very debatable. Asuka and Shinji are a little more than just trauma-bonded, and irl you'll find happy people whose wives actually look like their mothers in some aspects. There is no perfect recipe for love, everyone is different and just have to find their own version of it.
I straight up bawled when Utada's voice started, like this ending honestly felt like saying goodbye to a very old friend, in a way saying goodbye to my childhood.
Well said. It feels like a true end to a part of your life you've been clinging on to. It's confusing and strange to experience it and cathartic to see it go but cherish it happening while you remember it fondly.

Even as a long time Asuka main... I think Shinji really needed Mari. Realistically speaking, Asuka's character would only break the already broken Shinji even more. Mari's probably the most realistic _Suitable_ choice for a lover. I'd personally date her over Asuka, honestly.

It's shit. There wasn't supposed to be 'a happy ending'. It's cringe. The ending is that the world was to be rebuilt from the ground up after Shinji and Asuka became gods.

Basically, Mari as a character only has metacontextual and thematic value; she symbolizes a new start, the future. She is, for all intents and purposes, a blank slate, who does absolutely nothing of substance in the movies outside of pushing. Pushing Shinji, pushing the plot. Away from the old, as her introduction marks the moment the Rebuilds start diverging sugnificant from the original, and towards the new, more hopeful future
This last scene only really has metacontextual value as well and imo is almost completely metaphorical. The traditional narrative has already ended at this point, with all of the Pilots having remained in the Anti - Universe, basically a metaphor of our own, IRL world. It takes place in a train station, a major symbol both in Eva and in Anno's life.
All of the characters are grown up, as the Curse of Eva, the Loops and the entire Evangelion franchise has come to en end, however, a chasm symbolized by the train tracks exists between Shinji and everyone else. While everything that happened beforehand truly took place and life continues in the now cleared up Rebuild Earth, it is unknown whether the Pilots still remember each other.
Suddenly, Mari appears. Their relationship is very ambiguous, however this is the first time we've ever seen Shinji act care - free and actually joke around along with other people. He is a changed person and doesn't board the train that arrives to the station his time, a symbol of escapism.
Then, Mari puts her hands on Shinji's neck and removes the DSS choker as One Last Kiss starts playing. It has circular shape, just like the Eva Loops figuratively that have been choking our main characters for more than 25 years.
Then, Shinji, the vessel that both Anno and the viewer at this point exclusively reside in, takes the initiative, as well as Mari's hands, with who she takes off towards the future, a more hopeful one for sure. Away from Evangelion, the magnum opus for Anno which has been in his mind, tormenting him on how to perfect it for more than two decades, as well as this piece of art that has reaches the souls of so many users, but has also become a vehicle for escapism for some.
Finally, the camera pans to our own world, as Shinji and Mari get lost in the crowd. Evangelion is over.
Unorthodox, cathartic, and ending no one wanted, but so many people needed. That's how I would describe it.
Goodbye, all of Evangelion.
Then you read the manga adaptation of the original series, and you realize that for much of this Anno fell back on that after his own idea's fell through with the second film. When you look at the production history of the story, you see that Mari was pretty much thrust on them without a plan for her. 3.0 was done to just get something out there as Anno's company was riding on having ANYTHING out, and 3.0+1.0 was trying to figure out how to work backwards from the mess they'd made, and moving towards a semblance of what the manga did being the most viable way to do so, and the Rebuild Asuka being so out of touch now with Original Asuka that reconciling the two would have been an even greater admission that 3.0 was a mistake with how immature her 'adult' self is.
Plus, if people want to explore the 'happy' Eva Timeline where Shinji and Asuka hooked up after getting over their problems, they have Evangelion ANIMA for that.
You clearly are one of the OG fans of this series. Can you explain to a newcomer to anime, like me, what exactly this scene is from? I have never watch NGE but I have seen reviews about it and I am more than a bit hesitant to watch it because of the weirdness (guy rubbing off to comatose chick) and the misery porn and self-effacing characters who never try to improve. This video looks like a reboot or something with a much better story and characterisation. Can you tell me what it is?
@@orboakin8074 this scene is the ending scene of Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0, the finale of the Rebuild quadrology of movies, basically an alternative universe to Neon Genesis Evangelion and End of Evangelion (Episodes 25/26 and EoE are NOT part of the same continuity). These continuities, while separate from each other, start in the same way and are still connected, as they're considered as "Loops" of the Evangelion story that characters like Kaworu are aware of, however they are loosely explained and mainly hold symbolical and metacontextual value.
In general the Rebuilds, are a completely different beast. They do tons of things differently, take many risks and are very unorthodox in their storytelling, as half their value can be found in the parallel META - narrative going on, which is about the creator of the series, Hideaki Anno struggling to move away from his obsession with his magnum opus, as well as some viewers who disregarded the original's anti - escapism theme and actually used Evangelion as a means of escapism.
They are very well - worth the watch and actually do some things better than the original, however they're inferior overall to the original.
You talked about story and characterization. In terms of that NGE and EoE are a class of their own and I really have never come across a show with characters as nuanced and alive as those in NGE + EoE. In the Rebuilds it's mixed, with some arguably receiving better - executed development and others being downgraded heavily. When it comes to the story, it's more difficult to say because the Rebuilds are completely different in how they work as well, with them intentionally putting aside the traditional narrative at times to focus on the parallel META - narrative I described. There's also a complete lack of the explicit character introspection scenes of the original in the Rebuilds, as the same character development moments are handled much more subtly in the Rebuilds, with the "show, don't tell" storytelling technique being more widely used. Also, note that the pseudo - scientific/religious technobabble of the original (and the exposition accompanying it) has been cranked up in the Rebuilds, which you should continue to mostly ignore.
Finally, while all of the characters being sick in the mind in the original was one of its most important elements and they all tried to change in the end, I get where you're coming from, as the most conclusive ending to Eva thus far, EoE, was so bleak and hopeless on the outside that it seemed like no one actually changed to the better.
While that certainly isn't correct, in the Rebuilds it's the exact opposite. It's been created to be a more explicitly hopeful story from the ground up and the characters change a lot by the end of it, which makes me think you'll actually enjoy them more.
In conclusion, certainly give them a try; treat them like poetry up to an extent though. You must know some external information about the creator and the history of the franchise to fully appreciate them, as well as put a lot of thought by yourself in uncovering the different metaphorical layers. That's also because only a year has passed since the Rebuilds' conclusion came out, meaning that in - depth analysis videos are very scarce. Be sure to watch the excellent "Curse of Evangelion" video and I can answer whatever question you have.

Remember guys, no matter how you feel about the conclusion (you prefer the happy end or the original bad end in EoE) we all gotta congrats Anno for finally giving it a satisfying conclusion (at least, to himself). I heard from sources that Mari is believed to the inspiration of his wife, and Anno was in depression, until he met his wife, which changed his world. So the way I see it, Anno self-inserted his persona as Shinji, struggling with life, until he meets with various people (Rie, not necessarily his mom, but just a persona), Kaworu whom show him love, Asuka who is always pushing him to look up, his father Gendou, Misato etc, and Mari(wife) who walks into his life.

It's... been a real long trip. I was 14 when I first discovered Evangelion (on Adult Swim, no less) and on my 29th year, I watched the last Eva movie Anno will likely ever make. It's kinda crazy how long it's been since the start to the genuine end. I have mixed feelings about it, but ultimately I'm satisfied.
It was the very opposite of cathartic. It completely shat on everything the original was.

Finally watched it today and I absolutely cried my eyes out at this scene
Happy endings feel increasingly rare for the animes I've seen, so seeing someone with so much baggage and trauma end up with someone who's able to bring him out of his shell and allow him to enjoy life was beyond cathartic. I am blown away at how a hopeful ending can be even more powerful than one that ends in disaster and tragedy.
I consider this to be the true ending to Evangelion, mainly because of its focus on being positive. That you can work through your issues and end up a happier person on the other side. It speaks to me personally as I want to achieve that someday.

Ironically, all parties taking anything from this scene are sort of reading into it to much
The actual story board people wanted to make this scene not really romantic, but flirty like how Kaji (and Mari) have been throughout the series. It's supposed to show shinji is getting out of his shell, growing enough confidence to be a little flirt with his friends.
Hell, this ending as a whole is supposed to be as open and fluid as possible. Do you want shinji to have started fresh with Mari? Go for it. Do you want this to be shinji have just finished up with his friends and be meeting up with Mari now? Sure. Want Shinji to turn around and tongue kiss Kaworu at the station? If that's what you want it to be.
It's supposed to be an empty slate, it's up to you now what happens next.

Evangelion was like an RPG game with three endings. The ok ending, the bad ending, and the best ending.
Given the state of mind and what he went through all his life. Shinji and Mari makes sense given that he has baggage (well, most of them do, Asuka and Rei having it heavy).
Him going with either the original two will be more harm to him than help. As they have heavy emotional baggage, Rei having issue figuring it and Asuka in expressing it.
What he needs is someone emotionally stable and patient that can work with him. Of the three, Mari fits the bill better than the other two. She has the patience to work with him and help get him out of his shell. She is what I would call a benchmark or baseline for him to work towards. Not a 100% have to be like her, but a set goal to be more open and mature as he grows up.

legit waited my entire life, waiting for shinji to grow up, to overcome his demons, his trauma and his weaknesses to just be a balanced adult, i broke down and wept with this ending, a thousand different emotions hit me all at once just getting to see the guy for the first time, feel normal and happy, its one of the more optimistic endings of a movie ever, not about destroying a world ending threat, or taking down a skyscraper sized mech or defending the last embers of humanity, just a guy finding happiness.
Random Fun Fact : Adult Shinji’s voice actor is the same actor that portrayed Soujiro Seta in Rurouni Kenshin Live Action and more recently he’s Koichi Shikishima from oscar winner movie Godzilla Minus One ☝🏼

Funny how people think this is some epic poetic telling of Hideaki Anno’s struggle and victory against depression despite this being the most obvious and soulless cash grab of a movie franchise i’ve seen.
Filled to the brim with cheap fanservice, both sexual and emotional.
The series ends with Shinji defeating god through the power of friendship and getting the glasses fetish girl.
That’s not a deep and poetic ending, it’s a generic, old, feel good, self insert hero gets to win ending which dweebs jerk themselves off to and from these comments they obviously pulled it off.
Imagine the cash they’re making off of all the figurines of the girls in the new outfits lmao

While I kinda agree that people tend to overrate Eva Rebuild I also think that is fine if people like it, that's part of the meta of this series, thing I can say that actually lands pretty well.

If I may just share some additional context for this scene, just because I find it interesting, this scene wasn't actually meant to be in a romantic, but rather to show Shinjis finally grown out of his shell.
Shinji has grown confident enough to play-flirt with his friends (In the same way Kaji, and to a lesser extent Mari would). Because could you ever see young Shinji have enough confidence to be this bold?
Hell, the ending as a whole was written to be an empty slate. Maybe this is Shinji leaving for his new life with Mari, maybe this is just another day and he just finished up with his friends. You want Shinji to turn around and hold Kaworu in the most romantically embrace? If that's what you want then so be it.
This ending was written as Anno passing the story onto you, it goes where you please now, as he has told his story.
Mari is not Shinji's girlfriend, she is a kind of tutor or mentor.

I'm not saying anything negative about Mari here, but the people who say Asuka would have been a bad fit for him confuse me. I would have much, MUCH rather seen Asuka go through the character development needed to become a good fit for Shinji rather than had a character come out of nowhere fine as she was and never needing to change. Asuka and Shinji could have grown together, dealt with their struggles together...instead Mari just needs to wait for Shinji to grow up. It just...meh. Still, I'll take a straight out happy ending over an implied potential one.
Yeah what is weird about people saying asuka is a bad fit for shinji is, they are implying (intentional or unintentional) asuka can't change and develop as a person so instead of these films giving her well written character development they should instead just abandon her because she would be bad/unhealthy to everyone around her, that totally makes more sense. Then why add asuka in these films in the first place? Shinji, even if it was a rushed and sloppy arc, got his character development in the last film and this movie (as well as 3.0) could've easily done the same for asuka (this is fiction after all, the writer is the one who chooses what to do and what not to do with a character) but instead they made her act worse and even more immature than her 14 y.o self even if she is supposed to be mentally 28. And so because she is a "bad person" (because writers choose her to be that way) we should abandon her.
Don't people see how nonsensical this is? Don't know why people forgive bad writing like this in evangelion, if this was every other anime it would've been criticized to hell for having stagnant characters and badly done character development/progression. Even EoE gives her much better character development while shinji is the one who doesn't change or grow that much in that movie. This movie kind of feels the opposite. Like idk, didn't these writers ever thought of the concept of developing both characters at the same time? So they can finally become healthy individuals to form a relationship. Rebuilds really did asuka dirty, gave her no development at all. I think they shouldn't have added her at all since they knew asuka was going to play a minor role (compared to the original series/EoE) in these films because of mari's inclusion, which is why they didn't give a sh*t to develop her as a character.
Rei got a bit of a better treatment for example as they made her grow more so she can be more open and likeable (even if that thing about her being "programmed to like" shinji hurt her character and independency a bit overall). The fandom loved farmer rei in the last movie for example and i have seen a lot of people also saying that she was turned into a more likeable character in the rebuild version since in the tv series she was like robot and emotionless. Asuka i think deserved a development like that as well but unfortunately the writers neglected her. Even as someone who likes asuka's character normally i found her to be insufferable and unnecessarily angry in the last 2 rebuild movies.
Btw the manga kind of fixes this issue by giving both shinji and asuka a new chance in the newly created world where both are mentally healthy because of not having their traumas anymore and are fit to enter a relationship quite easily. Too bad the problem with that ending is that they don't fully remember each other because of amnesia (though shinji seems to slightly recognize asuka even if he doesn't remember anyone else from his old life). And while it gives them a hopeful ending and a new chance by implying they are destined to meet each other and will even go to the same school, it still leaves their relationship up in the air. There is no conclusive statement. So too bad that none of the endings are quite perfect for the asuka x shinji ship. Unless you are counting spin offs or even fanfics if you are into that stuff.
I'll never expect Mari. She went to college with his mother and had a crush on her. She's more traumatized than both Shinji and Asuka. Evangelion was about the ORIGINALS. Shinji and Asuka overcoming their lives and getting to live they way they wanted together.

The first time hearing that people hated this ending was in this comment section. I thought it was amazing. Shinji finally grows up, he accepts reality for what it is. And he made the world a better place. This is the best ending we could have asked for. It made me cry.
I won't lie, I cried a little when they ran off and the camera pulled back for the cityscape shot.
I still tear up at this scene. It is the perfect ending.

The last two movies from the Rebuild are such a narrative hot mess but man a lot of the feelings portrayed are so damn good.
Eva is by far the best crafted story but I love how each character is built in such a crazy setting, that's why I like Eva because I think it resembles life as most of the time we don't even know what the actual fuck is going on with the world and despite all of that we also have to fight with ourselves and surely sometimes the ones we love.
I think that almost no one who watches eva for story resolution would find eva really appealing, watching eva to resonate with the characters' feelings is the intended way in my opinion.
The last 2 Rebuilds aren't narrative hot messes though.

You clearly are one of the OG fans of this series. Can you explain to a newcomer to anime, like me, what exactly this scene is from? I have never watch NGE but I have seen reviews about it and I am more than a bit hesitant to watch it because of the weirdness (guy rubbing off to comatose chick) and the misery porn and self-effacing characters who never try to improve. This video looks like a reboot or something with a much better story and characterisation. Can you tell me what it is?

So there's the original series, 26 episodes and one movie (the end of evangelion), and this is the rebuild series, with a similar beginning but the story goes somewhere else. The movies are called:
