We were on the Island Princess in July, and nearly everything you’ve said was just as true there! We were on the Regal when the Medallion Net was first introduced, and LOVED it… since then it’s severely degraded!
I totally agree with your conclusion regarding the Medallion App and the medallion. On our last cruise, on the Grand Princess to the Mexican Riviera, the app really irritated me, since I had really expected that it was going to work as promised. I think that a lot of the apps problems were directly related to the "Best Wi-Fi at Sea". As well, I have no interest in the avatar or games and I had the same frustration regarding the menu. We ended up going to the MDR to look at the menu and make our dinner reservations, which wasn't bad since we got to know the wait staff. In a future video you might mention that if you buy drinks for yourself and another person, you need to use the other persons medallion for their drink or else they both go towards your drink total for the day, assuming you have a drink package. Not much to say about the medallion, it works as promised and is much, much better than a cruise card. You guys are great, I watched this video because I saw it advertised with the review of your 14 day Norwegian cruise, which I enjoyed very much: Thank you!
On my recent cruise on discovery, the app not once allowed me to order a drink, and wound up sending food orders to our cabin, when we were in a lounge waiting. Talked to the Medallion people many times, and they could not help, nor did they direct me to anyone who could. I love the concept, but it's implementation significantly detracted from my cruise experience.
I agree 100% we were on the cruise with you and had the same issues, the medallion worked great for doors and going on and off the ship. The app was ok ordering drinks, and keeping track of my group. after a few days we started to ask for the printed schedules as the one on the app was useless. for the internet I found that it was horrible , slow and would not connect. the last day I needed to connect to British Airways to check in,. It took 4 hours even using the computers in the internet cafe.
I think the problem with slow WiFi may be due to congestion. With every passenger using the medallion, there’s a lot more traffic. The app, according to your review, is loaded with graphics. Graphics take up a lot of bandwidth. Between all of the different ways Princess is relying on communicating their passengers, I think they neglected to size their network access appropriately. Until that happens, there will be very unreliable WiFi. This is just my opinion.
We have been on several Princess cruises that used the medallion. It worked beautifully. We NEVER had any issues. We’re able to order our drinks and get them quickly. We were also able to keep track of all our travel companions with ease. The internet was great too. So with that being said, you need to mention that the issues you had were not the norm. Contacting Guest services or the Medallion staff would have been the best thing to do to get some assistance with your issues. But also remember it depends on the ships location. Not fare to trash the Medallion experience, it can be a really great experience!
Enjoyed your candid review of the Princess Medallion and App. I'm preparing for a Princess cruise and hope they've worked all the bugs out of the App. Just in booking the cruise, I noticed quite a few technical issues with managing my booking on their website. I'm not getting warm fuzzies from what I'm hearing about the App. I started the App install and don't like that they are requiring full access to my Media Folders, Camera, Microphone, and Bluetooth on my device. Did you have any security concerns?
We were on the Emerald Princess in March of this year for a 14 day Caribbean Circle cruise and the medallion did not like our cell phones to interact with but it opened the cabin door with no problems. Couldn't use it to order drinks delivered to us but the ship was only half full and that was not an issue. Going to Alaska in May on the Majestic Princess so maybe the thing will work this time. But it is not a real issue for us.

You nailed it! The medallion is great, the app so-so, the Internet abysmal. My wife and I were on the Sky Princess in the Caribbean for 3 weeks and it was unusable. I measured the download speed several times - 0.5 MB. Horrible. Let's hope that since all the Carnival internet (including Princess) is moving to StarLink that will improve. As it is, it is not worth paying for.

YES! YES! YES! YES! The entire system is SOOO frustrating!!! I am elite on Princess, and I am sailing Celebrity in a couple of weeks. Their app works perfectly!
I only used the medallion to open my door, get on or off the ship, or order food/drinks. I had no trouble with any of those things. The internet, which isn't really a medallion responsibility, is as useless as breasts on a boar. The only time the internet worked was when we were in port within range of a tower. I got my money back on the wifi because it never worked. I think they had to refund the money for wifi to everyone. I don't need the bells and whistles for games etc. I just want internet that actually works when I want it to.
I have never sailed on Princess before. I just booked my first trip. The app is absolutely appalling. Now I am no techie, but I do know enough to be able to navigate a decent app. I knew something was seriously wrong when it kept telling me that my passport was from the cocos Islands. No matter how often I went back. Scroll through the alphabetical Country list and put in USA. It still wants me to be from the cocos islands.! we have not sailed yet, but I am definitely a bit cautious about using the medallion app.
I just come back from a cruse and the Medallion does not do what its suppose to do.. Order a drink and they ask for your room number they don't scan it. The only time it works is when you get on and off the ship and buy coffee. They have a hard time keeping track of your onboard credit. You see charges for things you didn't order, and if you have free laundry they still charge you and then they credit you later, but they don't tell you that. So you are not sure how much onboard credit you have.
You asked for the older crowd…we use the medallion like the old key…it didn’t work most of the times. To board the ship I got an assigned time of arrival…nahhh!! We got there and we were given a number and seat there until we call you…when they did it was passed my original time and we boarded bay the group number given by the receiving personnel at the pier. It didn’t open our door as promised…many times I have to take the medallion and placed on top of the locking mechanism…I didn’t order drinks (I don’t drink) and we order special coffee and tea directly at the counter…we can care less about that gizmo
The app and actually accurate delivery of food and drinks needs improvement. The app is slow to load, doesn’t have basic information like restaurant times. Orders usually don’t come complete, other times the complete order doesn’t come at all or gets delivered to the room without us knowing. I’d say it works about half the time. It’s really unacceptable and they need to rethink their delivery process. Wish the WiFi works in the elevators.
The App is a nightmare. Apps are to supplement your web page. Insisting that people use the app to board at least have an app that's not a total POS. I've cruised on Princess many times. This is my last. I'm not dealing with this non sense. I go on a cruise to disconnect from my phone not to marry it.
I booked a cruise for this fall but I’m not computer literate. Makes me want to cancel my Princess Cruise. I heard that there is a class for an hour to take to use this Medallion. I don’t want to waste time to take a class to confuse me……I’ve heard nothing but BAD and TERRIBLE things about the Medallion.
I wish I hadn’t booked with Princess. The app will not allow me to enter boarding info and I have been in the Blue Lane for weeks. Not looking forward to going...too stressful and worrying. Dreading what else can go wrong. Definitely an App problem!
Thank you for making this video. Going on vacation to de-stress and not using the internet can be challenging. It can be difficult to detach if you have work obligations and we are all just creatures of habit. Growing up we would go to the Internet cafe on board if we really needed to send an email or browse the internet while at sea. If that isn’t working I could understand being frustrated, especially when needing to print or lookup flight info. It is understandable to be frustrated when Princess advertises their internet as being the best at sea etc. The Medallion App seems to heading in the right direction and hopefully guest feedback like this helps over time. The menu feature would be nice, but I enjoy waking around the ship and normally the menus are posted out front of each restaurant during the day so you can see what is for dinner that evening. I do get it though. I like to pick out what I will eat before I even arrive to dine 😊. I really like Princess Cruise line and hope they keep improving these features. My issue with all the changes since 2020 is how the Captain Circle loyalty program has become. Before as a platinum level, I received a lot of great perks. Now, they are all rubbish and I don't have any loyalty to remain with Princess anymore. My next cruise is in 60 days and I will see how it goes, but I am not expecting too much from it. In comparison my last cruise prior to COVID was awesome because of all the platinum benefits.
@jerry The new benefits of the loyalty program are a shadow of what they were only a year or two ago. I don't find them particularly useful in comparison, at any level. They are minor bonuses at best.
I'm new to a cell phone...but I downloaded the app and did everything: I HOPE. Anyway it tell me in Green Line. Not sure if the Health questionnaire will pop up or not or if I had already done it....I still have 40 days before cruise. I'm sure use to printing a Boarding Pass but I guess that's gone with the wind. So what do I have to have with me...Passport and just my Cell Phone with the App?
All I hear is a couple of entitled suite guests moaning, mostly about trivial things that only negatively effect the experience if you are looking for something to complain about on CZcams. Too tip, if you are not happy with the Princess cruise experience then travel with someone else and leave those of us that are just happy to be on a cruise enjoy the experience without trivial background whining ….. please 🙏

at the bars they still use cabin numbers NOT to medallion , people kept using my cabin number for their drinks
