    The rattle noise is a well know problem on the Ecotec Z18XER, Z16XER. Because an engine has too many moving parts, it is hard know exactly where the noise is coming from. Here is the breakdown:
    1) Cam position sensor (electrical)
    2) Cam actuator solenoid (electromagnetic valve)
    3) Cam actuator phaser (hydraulic)
    The cam position sensor sends information to the computer. The cam actuator solenoid receives signal from the computer and then feeds oil to the cam actuator phaser. Inside the cam actuator phaser there is a rotor. If you add oil to one side of the rotor's lobe and remove it from the other side the rotor moves advancing or retarding the camshaft.
    TROUBLESHOOTING: It depends how early did start the problem, and how quick got fixed. In fact, a defective cam actuator solenoid may start damaging a brand new cam actuator phaser. BOTTOM LINE: If the rattle noise is coming accompanied by code P0011, P0016, or some other related codes, it must be the camshaft actuator phaser. So, I will replace all those items to be worry free.

      Granted it's a well known problem but it's not entirely GM's fault - it's the lack of servicing and imperative oil changes that causes these to have a shorter life expectancy.
      Got a 50k mile '11 plate Zafira here and they're knackered because it hadn't had an oil change in 6 years.
      If people did what they had to do when they had to do it, they could have saved themselves money in the long run.

    Perfect thanks! Was it hard to do and did you need to prime the actuator as i understand it needs oil inside? Im hoping to do it this weekend and hopefully lf goes well! Also does it have locking holes behind for it to have correct placement? Thanks for your help!

    • @JayJayJaroo
      @JayJayJaroo  Před 10 lety +2

      No need to prime the pully as it is oil pressure fed so will fill up once running.You must use the correct timing kit as per the video to make sure the timing is spot on.A bar locks the back cams and a 2 piece kit locks the front cams in the right poaistion they have alignment marks on the pullys hope this helps.

I also bought a timing belt kit by opel and theres no crankshaft srew in it, just these two for the idler and tensioner. My 2018 Chevy Sonic 1.8 is doing this pretty much when brand new. It started clattering around 700 miles. It only lasts about 3 secs or less while its warm and sat for an hr or so. I've changed the oil 2 times with synthetic and car currently has 3500 miles. Is it possible that the vvt solenoid is allowing oil to drain back when it shouldn't be? Unlikely as it's a physical breakdown of the high tolerance parts within the dephaser. It's usually cam sensors and blocked/stuck solenoids that will throw a code.
      I suppose if it's really knackered as in not being able to maintain enough oil pressure to advance the pulley then the ECU will probably pick up on that through the emission system and throw a code.
