  • Exploring the work of James Watson, Francis Crick and Rosalind Franklin (Genetics) through to Professor Troy Margrie (Neurology), part of the MRC series to celebrate 100 years of life-changing discoveries.
The structure of #DNA was discovered by Crick and Watson based on Franklin and others at King's College London. A great deal of ingenuity went into creating that model of the double helix. However, though the structure suggested how DNA might work. it didn't explain how DNA would contain the information to make proteins, how #genes could be switched on and off, or how they could be regulated.
Troy Margrie is Principal Investigator at the National Institute for Medical Research in Mill Hill. As a systems #neuroscientist, he is interested in understanding how the circuitry of the brain gives rise to the complex functions it performs.
#Genetics is the most useful tool for neuroscientists. At the moment, they are looking at fundamental questions, how the brain wires up and what's the consequence of that wiring. Genetics has come to the forefront of systems neuroscience as it opens up an array of possibilities for neuroscientists such as labelling specific sets of cells, tracking specific pathways of connectivity through the brain, and even driving the expression of particular light-sensitive proteins in the membranes of the neurons in the brain for imaging.
