  • Replacing the bad PCV on my 2011 Audi A4, because it was running Rough at idle. Also throwing a fault code for bank 1 running too lean at idle. When I replaced the bad PCV valve the car ran like new.

Great tutorial! Worked perfectly for my 2011 a4 b8 just under 70k miles. Took out the rough idle and audible whine from the engine. So far, no repeat on the codes.

Did your car have a check engine light on?, apparently the symptoms of a bad PCV valve is that you turn on the car, and then try to remove the oil cap with the engine running, if the oil cap is easy to remove it’s good, if the cap is very hard to remove it’s bad, or when you take off the oil cap has a suction sound like a vacuum then is bad, mine has both of the symptoms and the weird thing is that I don’t have a check engine light on

@@samwh4775 I hope you replaced or found your leak, you can blow a rear main seal if you drive around with a bad PCV and that costs more than 1K. Shouldnt have a vacuum.

JUST FYI u don't need to remove the entire part just replace the oil separator gasket and voila is done. The gasket will just cost about 40 compare to the entire part which will run around 200. Remove the circular cover that u see on top of the part and replace the gasket, it will come with the spring as well.

The replacement pcv you put on is the old style and incorrect part #, visually you can tell because it's all black. The updated pcv's have a translucent section on top, as the one you removed has. The old style one will lower crankcase vacuum and could damage the rear crankshaft oil seal as the ecm has been reflashed for the updated pcv you just removed and crankcase vacuum will be incorrect, also it will increase oil consumption.

steve- i have an 09 A4 with about 60k miles...i had the oil consump issue and it was fixed per audi recall, which included replacing pcv...6 months later, i have a RMS leak and my indie tech believes ita due to bad pcv. My Q is: could the pre-fix pcv caused my rms to leak, and since it was so soon after i got new pcv, should audi be covering my rms fix? thanks for you help!

    • @d-block6136

steve - so, based on your knowledge, I should have a translucent unit in my car post- oil fix? if i have an all black unit, it can still fail and cause oil issues...ie extra pressure to make my seals leak? i will investigate further and see if Audi is responsible for the RMS leaking....TBC
