I particularly love how after putting the snow over the window well covers, from the inside of the house looking out you feel like you're in a snowfort, just a bit of light coming in through a wall of snow - pleasant childhood memories :)

I do that, too, in the seldom event of snow, here in Germany. My neighbors think I'm nuts haha!

Any concerns about chemicals in the snow off the sidewalk or back lane?
Once the precipitation is trapped in the water battery trench full of wood chips, how does it get located and used by the plants in your raised beds?
Cool video man, I hate to have to admit it, but I was actually expecting a watering can or hose. 😝

Ah so the click-bait approach worked ;)

I know there will be some roadsalt mixed into the driveway snow, but so far hasn't been a problem. It is one reason we use only sand on our driveway and steps, rather than the ice-melt salt stuff.

The water makes its way up from the path/trenches (water battery) up into the raised beds by wicking action in two ways:
Number one is passively via all the organic matter in the soil (all the compost etc we've added). To see this is in action try taking a dry dish cloth and draping it over the edge of the sink into a bowl of water - the water travels uphill through the cloth. Nature is awesome :)
Number two is actively via the mycellial network (mushroom 'roots') - they transport the water as well as minerals uphill to the tips of the plant roots, where the two interface (kind of like a plug and socket arrangement), and the mycelium trades the water and minerals for plant sugars :)
This is a permaculture maxim - 'More often the solution is biological than technological'.
This kind of water pump never breaks down either :)

Right on. We're hoping to do a yarden tour or one-day 'Intro to Permaculture / Regenerative Urban Yardening' course in the early summer. I'm also going to get going on a 'Permaculture's Greatest Hits' playlist of videos on this channel (the best videos by others that I've come across). So check back for that all that in the future.
