Great whites will bite a seal and then back off and wait for it to die of shock and blood loss. Not because they want to "make them suffer" but because seals and sea lions have powerful teeth and claws. It's just evolution, and Nature.
They usually AFAIK don't even eat they hyena they sever the spin of,they just leave em there to suffer a slow death. And they don't have issue doing it to cubs too,which imo is more malicious than eating them. Though yeah.
That hyena started to run in the direction of her mother. She then panicked and turned 90 degrees in direction the other way and allowed the lion to close the gap in a split second. If she kept running in her original direction maybe she would of had better odds at surviving.

There's no stopping a predator 3-4 times your own weight from killing your offspring when you have nowhere near enough other adults around to help you. Also, only a single cub was injured, giving the adult hyena (who probably wasn't really the mother, likely just another clan member) even less reason to risk its life.
