THANK YOU for this wonderful broadcast. Down to figuring out which has a better marketing arm.. Book Baby vs Ingram-Sparks vs. She Writes. How can I find out which of these actually have dedicated marketing reps who actively sell your book to bookstores? None of their sites specifically say this. Thank you so much!
None of them, Rainy. She Writes is the only one that has legitimate publicity/marketing, but that is not distribution. Ingram Sparks and She writes both get your book into the Ingram computer (the largest book distributor in the country), but someone has to actually order the book. This is not something that these companies do--the outreach to booksellers.
I am a Brazilian writer looking for to publish my books in English. What bothers me more is that nobody in the USA want to be seen or personally contacted, they all want you to close a deal online after a phone call. In my country I have many books published all of them after a person to person meeting and contract. Cannot believe there is no such a possibility in the USA. I am now in the USA looking for a publisher with wom I can meet personally. Any recommendations? I got phone calls do far from Writers Republic, Lulu, iUniverse, IWA, Koehler and Dorraine.
It is so frustrating! But I'm afraid that unless you have a personal connection, you're not going to be able to meet with a publisher. The publishers who called you are all self-publishing or author services companies that you have to pay to publish your book. That's why they're calling. They want your money!
Thank you - I was just contemplating having my self-published book by Trafford since 2012 and sign up with Lime Press who charge a $1299 fee up front to target book stores Internationally and Domestically, they'd make changes to book cover & printing, if necessary, and send reports every 3 mos. I'm trying to make the right decision. What do you suggest?
My problem is always harassment by Xlibris; I got a check for 67 cents; and one for $4.00 a joke because I published 14 books and facebook loves me all for free. Now i got nailed by PresstoimpressPublishing for $500. and I asked them to re-send an e-mail. All a wasre of my time and joy.
What do you know about Gold Touch Press? My book is published by Litefire but now an endless amount of companies are trying to get me to buy promotions. Gold Touch claims they can put my book on the Amazon Best Sellers list for $5000. When I question them how they can do that they simply say, " We have our ways of doing it." Sounds fishy to me. Have you heard good things about this company?
Definitely sounds fishy. And Amazon bestseller lists don't mean anything. They have the most obscure categories that you could be #1 in--zombie self-help books ;)--but there are so few books in the category that you can easily be in the top ten. They'll use algorithms to figure out how to put the right metadata in to get into one of these categories and then they can call you a bestseller. So that's just a marketing ploy to get you to plunk down $. Don't do it.
That is very hard to believe. I would ask for an accounting of all money spent on your behalf. Fortunately, $500 isn’t a huge sum of your book if they are offering the other basic services of self publishing.
You mentioned in your video about a 'micro-publisher.' What is the name of the one you worked with? They sound wonderful. Do you have the names of others? Great video by the way.
Balboa Press is a legitimate company and Hay House is a terrific publisher. Our only word of caution is that I think they may oversell the idea of Balboa being a part of Hay House. It is a money-making arm of Hay House, but not seen in the industry as the same.
Legit publishers mostly charge for you to buy back copies of your own book. This gives them assurance that they will be able to sell out their first print run. Fake publishers charge you for all the individual things publishers do, like covers, editing, marketing, etc. Let us know if you have other, more specific, questions. Cheers, a&d
I'm trying to make sure I understand this. Instead of remaindering unsold copies, a legit publisher has you agree to buy them back at X dollars per copy. Is that correct?
Doesn't look legit based on their website. Always look for bios of who is running the company and what their claims are. I'm sorry this happened to your stepmother.

So my sister just got an offer from a friend to publish a book. He actually had an idea for a story and wants my sister to write a book about it so that he can publish it for her. He claims to have an Amazon Seller Certificate and an LLC license and an even editing team to back him up. He gave my sister a deadline till March to finish the story and promised that she will receive 30% of the profits. He didn't ask for any money. He just told to finish the story by March and deliver the manuscript. He plans to release it first as an E-Book and if it does well, he will publish it. He also said that if the book doesn't do well, they will just try it again with another one. So I am wondering if I should trust this guy? He and my sister went to the same school and my parents even talked with his mom and dad on some occasions. Hi I have received acceptance by Fulton Books and another publisher has told me they are very legitimate, I want to know if this is reputable and if it’s true about their legitimacy!
They are not a publishing company. So "acceptance" just means they will take your money to help you self-publish. If that is what you are interested in, then I would do a search with their name and reviews to see if people have had good or bad experiences with them.
We're not familiar with Palmetto, but if you follow our steps in our video on spotting scammers czcams.com/video/BawATOfUUkE/video.html, you should be able to detect if they are or not.
Dorrance Publishing has accepted my book and would like to move forward with me. Any experience with them? PS: I did my research and looks like they are legit but expensive.
Dorrance doesn't "accept" books like an actual publisher. They "accept" your money. They are not a company that we are fans of precisely because they make people think they are a publisher.
I was contacted by Stratton Publising and they said they would help republish, market, and distribute my book but when I searched online I wasn’t able to really find a website. I’m hesitant to sign a contract with them. Any thoughts?
Thank you for your reply! I decided to pass on them, because I figured out that I would be making 10% less with them than what I get directly from ACX (Audible) for a book narration. And I would not really have any direct way of knowing how many audiobooks are actually being sold, because I would have to get the reports second hand from them.
I’d love to know if you think Ocean Reeves Publishing is a legitimate ASSISTED publishing :) It seems legit to me but I know I don’t have the knowledge of what to look for exactly x

I was contacted by Maple Leaf Publishing Inc. from Canada about a book endorsement, exhibition etc. I was asked to pay $600 per exhibition per city and if I wanted to do it in all 4 cities they would slash it down to $399.75. Are they legit?
I wouldn't call this a scam. But we are very skeptical about what you would gain from the service. We also don't like that the "about us" page doesn't have bios of the people who work there. That is a big red flag for us. Back to what they will deliver: What does an exhibition in a city mean? If these exhibitions are, for example, at book fairs, then it will be virtually impossible to get a return on your investment. Anecdotally, we find most people sell less than a dozen copies of their books at book fairs unless they are a featured author. We were just at the Los Angeles Times Festival of the Book where we were both featured and in their advertising. We had 75-100 people at our event, but we sold less than a dozen books. If you can tell us a little more about your book, we could give you some other ideas about how best to market.
@@priscillaabaido6905 definitely wouldn't spend that kind of money on a book fair. Email us at arielle@thebookdoctors.com with a description of your book and we'll let you know what would make most sense for your book.

Hello - I loved your video...I only wish we had seen it a year ago. My 86 yr old dad had his book on religious beliefs published in November by Archway Publishing and though the publishing went okay he has seen no results from their promised publicity. At this time, he is considering a new publisher who will publish/ promote it to a higher degree. Two possibilities are Author's Press and XLibre. When I Google their reviews, I get varying comments, some good, some bad, so it's hard to tell where they are on a scale of "Good to Bad." Would you have any suggestions on a Publisher/ Promoter for Religious content that would be reputable? He is so afraid of falling for a scammer...sending money and getting nothing in return as many of these outfits seem to do. We would appreciate any advice. Thank you in advance.
Local, small, family-owned operations are often the way to go. Also, if you are part of a particular denomination, often there are small publishers/printers that specialize in book about specific denominations.

@@Esther-bn8ut That's great news! Best of luck and keep us posted!
Thank you. You seem very honest and legit. Look forward to your input on my first self publishing journey.
Wonderful!
Thank you really informative.
Thx so much!
Hello, I'm thinking about publishing with Faith Christian Publishing or Covenant Books. What are your thoughts on them?
We have commented on both of them previously on this thread, I believe. And both are VERY dubious. BEWARD pls!
I have a question maybe you guys can help me with. I would love to find out if Newman's Spring Publishing is Legit? I did my research and they seem legit, I would just love to have another set of eyes verify them.
They are not. Pls look elsewhere!
@@TheBookDoctors Thank you, They just called me and told me they accepted my manuscript and wanted to publish my book. Thank you once again.
@@nashawnortiz7726 That's part of the problem. They don't "accept" books. They just take your money and pretend to be a publisher.
I am trying to get published locally for the first time, but hesitant about the company. Can you help me?
Have you done your research? Google the name of the company with the words "review" and "scam" and see what comes up.
How about Newman Springs because they called me and told me that they accepted my book?
Terrible! Beware!!!
Covenant Books wants 550 up front and 2,000 over 10 months with 5% on royalties after I make my initial money back.
I'm thinking no but are they legit?
We don't know them. Just make sure to do thorough research.
Please, is Gatekeeper press a legitimate company for marketing and publishing books?
We don't know them. But google their name along with "scam" and "review"
Is Newman springs great for publishing? They won't try to steal someone's work, right?
They are no good.
I am a victim of Newman Springs Publishing. I paid close to $4,000 for them to make and sell my book. I never got paid anything. Two years later, I complained, and they sent me a check for $23. All they will do is take your money, and not sell your book, even though they claim to highly sell your book for maximum effectiveness. THEY ARE A SCAM!
Great info as always!! Thank you.
Thx, Geoffrey!
do you happen to know where are these self-publishing call center companies located because they keep contacting me to publish my book with them. do we have the same experience? I am from the US.

It really is! Grrrrr!
Do you guys have any experience with palmetto publishing ?
We're not familiar with Palmetto, but if you follow our steps in our video on spotting scammers czcams.com/video/BawATOfUUkE/video.html, you should be able to detect if they are or not.
Dorrance Publishing has accepted my book and would like to move forward with me. Any experience with them?
PS: I did my research and looks like they are legit but expensive.
Dorrance doesn't "accept" books like an actual publisher. They "accept" your money. They are not a company that we are fans of precisely because they make people think they are a publisher.
Thanks for the advice. What about I universe publishing company?
Terrible. Stay away.
@@TheBookDoctors thanks so much! I was considering them but had my doubts.
I was contacted by Stratton Publising and they said they would help republish, market, and distribute my book but when I searched online I wasn’t able to really find a website. I’m hesitant to sign a contract with them. Any thoughts?

Yes it is.

Have not heard of them. Pls do your research!
I got scammed. It's called Oxigle press in India. Previously called bookfever.
So sorry to hear that.
Correction...XLibris...
I just got an offer to narrate a 3 book series for Scarsdale Publishers. Are they legitimate, or are they a book services company?
They look legit. Can't say for sure, but they pass our initial test!
Thank you for your reply! I decided to pass on them, because I figured out that I would be making 10% less with them than what I get directly from ACX (Audible) for a book narration. And I would not really have any direct way of knowing how many audiobooks are actually being sold, because I would have to get the reports second hand from them.
And I just subscribed to you guys. You’re great! Thank you!

@@TheBookDoctors thank you so much and I needed to find out before since i don't have much knowledge and I'm trying to publish a book but don't want to fall for any scams out there
I was contacted by Maple Leaf Publishing Inc. from Canada about a book endorsement, exhibition etc.
Oh wow thanks so much for your response! The fair is Word on the Streets in Toronto.
Our book is a self published christian book.
@@priscillaabaido6905 definitely wouldn't spend that kind of money on a book fair. Email us at arielle@thebookdoctors.com with a description of your book and we'll let you know what would make most sense for your book.
@@priscillaabaido6905 Then you want to go where your audience is. Christian conferences that deal with your subject matter are the best places to sell books live--but you'd want to make sure you're on the schedule, not just buying a booth. Online marketing that hits your specific audience via Facebook ads could also work.

Thank you for telling me this information and after doing research I am not really confident. But it would be great if you could give me a response.
@@calvinkennedy9863 It's typically not a good idea to hire the same company to help you with the publishing piece as the publicity/marketing piece. You would want to hire a PR/marketing company that has expertise with nonfiction political books. Self-publishing companies who offer these services are usually the equivalent of burning a bunch of $100 bills. It takes a lot of research to figure out who would be the right match. Don't spend any money until you do that research!
