Curtis Mayfield was a true genius. This song is from a movie about street life and no one could have been a better choice for the music than Curtis. He only agreed to do the sound track if he could write songs that painted a negative picture of street life. If you really listen to the lyrics its a drug dealer who is trying to get out of the game and feels trapped. One of the lyrics is " Got a woman who I love desperately and I want to give her something better than me". On the same album is Freddy's Dead and Eddie you should know better. Great sound track. Curtis is a true legend who wrote some amazing songs with his group The Impressions and as a solo artist.

I see your shock at the rawness of this. I have known this song for so much of my life, maybe am desensitized to the frankness of the words. The groove and percussion are so amazing! Anyway, a song like "People Get Ready" will show you a completely different side of this great artist. Sadly, Curtis lived out the final years of his life as a parapalegic, after a scaffold collapsed on him during a live gig. Rock in Peace Curtis.

Shawn and Mel, THIS was the 70's and the music was RAW!!! I grew up listening to Curtis Mayfield and he was iconic during this time. In the 70's drugs were plentiful and EVERYBODY was using. And yes, the "Pusherman" was a big hit from the movie Superfly soundtrack. There were many Pimps and Big time drug dealers. It almost seemed like the norm, sad to say. Gotta do some homework before you play the music.

And throw in recreational drug use also became partnered with the times and the music. It was an "AN EXPERIENCE" as JIMI would say.

Curtis is a musical genius. Do not let this one song scare you. Its for the movie. Some of his songs were controversial and the powers that be did not want to play some of his tunes on the radio, or live performances, he had to compromise and change some words or lines when live performing. Earlier in his career he was in a soul group, The Impressions. They had a lot of hit tunes. Later on, he became paralyzed from the neck down, unable to play his guitar or walk because of a stage accident, wind causing heavy equipment to fall, hitting him from behind and off the stage.

He's telling a real story of the way things were back then in inner city neighborhoods during the middle and late 70's.Drugs had begun to playa big and negative role in the black community, which began mayhem and destruction.Thereafter,he wrote "Freddie is Dead"the outcome and beginning of total destruction toward our bros and sisters from that activity.

Set the way back machine to the 70's. I was a tall skinny 13 yo white boy with my portable 8-track player and my Curtis Mayfield 8-track cartridge feeling so cool. Hidden in the closet of course cause my dad would have gone ballistic if he found that music in the house... Im humming the tune in the house and my dad had NO CLUE...

Super Fly is a movie about a drug dealer. This was in 1972 and Ron O'Neal, the man in white on the album cover played the title character. Listen to the title song Super Fly by Curtis Mayfield.

Happy New Year Mel & Shawn.. I love this reaction, the late great mr Curtis Mayfield' is undoubtably one of the greatest songwriters and soulsters to ever do it.. beyond the lyrics there's this driving beat I see you two experiencing, its hypnotic, there's another song from the same soundtrack Freddy's Dead that speaks from the other side of what drugs can do so listen to that one as well, he written for the Queen of Soul ms Aretha Franklin and many others, check out The Makings of You..

Finally! Curtis Mayfield! If you want to know what the early 70s in places like where I grew up felt like, just play this entire soundtrack from the movie, Superfly. It sounds exactly how it was...raw, gritty, and yet very energized at the same time. It takes me back, both in good and not so good ways. Musical genius. Also, check out The Impressions, Curtis Mayfield's prior group.

This music depicted the reality of street life the movie was not made to glorify drug dealing but a man who got caught up in the fast life of women drug dealing and danger. He wanted out. Watch the movie this song was one of the first to give you a raw perspective on a drug dealer and all that follows. Curtis Mayfield was a musical genius if you were shocked at the lyrics then he accomplished his objective.

It IS a sad song. It’s supposed to be a sad song. It’s not glamorizing drug dealers. In the context of the whole album, and of the movie, this song just tells the truth. You MUST listen to the whole album, all together in order. And you should also see the movie. But listen to the words just of the song - he’s saying “THIS LIFE JUST DON’T MAKE IT” and ‘JUST A VICTIM OF GHETTO DEMANDS” - he’s revealing the psychology of a drug dealer, NOT glamorizing it.

During the 70s a lot of Movies were made that were labeled Black Exploitation Films. Curtis Mayfield was an extremely talented writer, Guitarist, Producer and Singer. He also wrote the sound track to the Movie Claudine. However, if you want to hear the very best of Curtis Mayfield listen to the great work he did as a member of the World Renown "Impressions". They recorded such songs as Gypsy Woman. Check it out, I think you'll enjoy it.

That entire album would scare her. The genuistry of Curtis and the band knew how to transport you from the safety of your own surroundings into that dangerous world. It matched the grittiness of the visuals for the film. It's something that hasn't been matched since.

Guys this is a deep deep rabbit hole you need to go way way down. Curtis Mayfield is one of the greatest musical genius this country has ever given birth to By the time he was twenty five Curtis had written over 125 song's He was a musical genius a musical lyricist. A poet. A teacher A producer one of the most influential artists ever. He wrote songs about Love. I'm so proud. Falling in love with you It was just another dance. He sang about heartache. long winter I love & I lost He sang about standing up for your self & being proud Keep on pushing meeting over yonder. This is my country we're a winner Litttle brown boy He sang about Class minstrel and Queen He sang about all people coming together and living in peace People get ready Choice of colors this is just a tiny sampling of the music he recorded when he was with the impressions. After he had left the impressions. His music got more funkier raw and delt more with social issues. You need to take a listen to this whole album. And then check out some of the other songs he recorded. If there's a hell below we're all going to go. Get down. Give me your Love. We people who are darker than blue. Move on up. Are a few of his recordings. He also helped to launch many people's careers one of the best was the group five stair steps that's a group you guys need to check out nobody has reacted to them and they are incredible
They won a local talent show The Jackson 5 was also in the talent show but the five stairsteps won the first place and a recording contract with Motown records but the father turned it down because the powers that be at Motown wouldn't give them musical freedom. So they ended up signing with Curtis Mayfield on his curtom record label. Love the Jackson 5. But the 5 stair steps steps I'll take them any day over the Jackson 5 ✌️&♥️
