First time viewer-Really appreciate and enjoyed your reaction to this album. Your deep knowledge, appreciation and insight into pop music is so refreshing-specially when you compare Madonna’s artistry with today’s artists. Luv it when you superimposed some of the lyrics of her songs-gives it that much more impact and meaning.
She worked on this album from 2017 thru it’s release in 2019 amidst a highly polarized geo-political climate that saw the rise of illiberal authoritarian right-wing regimes that’s anathema to her core socio-political beliefs and advocacy. I think this explains why this album is more political than celebratory or entertaining. The music videos and live tour performances of Madame X (as she’s achieved in her prior albums) gave more impactful and richer artistic visual and messaging than the audio version can do.
As a student and lover of history, the numbers that stunned me was the haunting interlude of the coffin and the beautiful Portuguese religious hymn Maria, Máe de Deus, Maria, Máe de Jesus (not in the album, but in the live tour) where I think she honored the Catholic tradition of Portugal and the Marian apparition at Fatima. This introduced Batuca featuring the all-female generational Batukadeiras ensemble from Cape Verde Islands (former Portuguese colony). This music was unique, empowering, uplifting and healing that evoked the history, struggles, defiance and ultimate liberation of West Africans and their descendants, some of mixed-race or Creole, during the centuries of the lucrative trans-Atlantic slave trade when Cape Verde became the hub for holding, sorting, and the trading of millions of Africans captured as slaves and transported to the Americas thru the horrific voyage known as the Middle Passage.
Madonna is unmatched in her artistic genius and vision. Looking forward for more coverage from your channel of Madonna’s music and artistry.

I think that this album is the most experimental and multicultural album she ever did, different from albums like Hard Candy I think this one will age the best
I think it’ll end up being an American Life type of situation that gets better with age
Oh definitely! Her experimental albums (RoL, Music, American Life, Madame X) seem to age way better than the ones where she's just following trends (Hard Candy, MDNA).
Confessions is the exception though, it's straight dance-pop and disco and still perfection!

It’s wonderful to hear you actually appreciate the details of the instrumentation and production rather than focus on the vocal effects. When this album came out there was such an ageist determination to claim that the production had been devised to conceal her vocal limitations, as if suddenly she could no longer sing more than three notes. In many ways Madonna’s voice is more raw on these tracks than it ever was on an Orbit track. This is clearly American Life’s long awaited sibling…It’s a shame Madonna’s persona overshadows the value of her musical genius. That’s not on her…just an unfortunate consequence of decades of being a socio-cultural agitator.

I've always liked her experimentation with vocodor effects and other electronic effects. This album grew on me and is one of my favorites.
Finally, someone who also loves Faz Gostoso as much as I do! Totally agree how this would have been a great summer song. Great album review.👍👍

I feel like she knew it could have been a hit, but she really wanted the artistic vision to be focused on the political songs, primarily. Interviewers were telling her it needed a video but she cheekily said she didn’t have the money for it. Lol

I love this album and still listen to it from time to time. The first time I heard it, I thought Madonna really lost her mind but once you understand what it is and where it comes from, its pretty ambitious and beautiful. There are a few artistic choices I would change that I think would have kept it experimental yet made it more commercially listenable. In Medellin, I really wish she would have gone full chorus after the first pre-chorus. It would have drew people in sooner and those harmonies are just so good. There are a few places I would have toned down the auto tune. I know its an artistic choice, but isn’t necessary in all places. Your music knowledge is very solid and appreciated. I agree that its an album that is best from start to finish.

You might wanna start with her proper debut called Little Earthquakes. She did release a failed big 80s pop rock synth album with her band Y Kant Tori Read...a fan favorite. Enjoy the journey with one of the deepest and most prolific singer songwriters of our generation.

Radio has written off Madonna as too old, unmarketable by whowhever decides demographics. The irony is that Madonna still manages without so-called acceptance. She's been long accepted, acknowledged and crowned, so she does what she wants creatively and has the money to reap the rewards or eat the losses. Not many of can claim that freedom. The other bit of irony is that her music always returns years later and is re-evaluated and accepted as ahead of it's time. She knows exactly what she's doing...have faith in her.

I always said that Crave was the centerpiece of the whole album. Prior to that was a very experimental music but at and after Crave she marries the two: the creative and commercial

I always thought they were saying CON troll. Emphasis on CON. I love that you called her RapDonna. I personally love RockDonna, which she morphs into once in a while also. This album was the only album I listened to for two years straight. I feel like it is one of her very best albums. Top 5 imo. She's a genius. This was the best album in 2019 imo. It's too bad that the masses could not see this, and they continue to listen to the same drivel that all sounds the same.

Great review! This one took me a while because of the vocal effects. I am now used to them and can appreciate the complex work this is. My favorite album is still American Life.

This is a World Music Album from Madonna. Once again, she made something FRESH and DIFFERENT. I'm in minority but Madame X is my 5th favorite Madonna album. I love its concept too.

I'm a big Madonna fan but although I appreciate the experimental aspect and especially the political messages in the album but this is one of my least favorite Madonna albums. I don't like the over use of autotune on the album. I like only 2 songs on this album which are Come Alive and Faz Gostoso.
Are you going backwards chronologically in her discography?
If not then I suggest that you start from the beginning with her debut album Madonna and on in order to appreciate her evolution as an artist.

As a 40yr Madonna fan, I can say one of my least favorite albums after American Life. Crave is the only song I can tolerate.

Very good ideas and material but really bad editing .... Madonna's lost the plot since 2015 at that issue 🤔
Bad album that she promoted for years after the release. God Control wasn't really hers , Medellin is awful...I could go on and on. If you think this is an outstanding album, please revisit Erotica and ROL, Bedtime Stories. To each their own, but it's just terrible. The best song that wasn't even on the album is Ciao Bella.
Hard disagree on it being bad. But it’s all subjective, which is the great thing about awry.
The melody to the chorus of God Control wasn’t hers, to which she offered to pay the original songwriter for.

@Pop Culture Weekly she only offered AFTER it was revealed. She gave him no credit early on. She could have made the album brilliant but it certainly did not wind up that way.
