A lot wich was shown in the anime is true after the breakdown of the USSR there were many soldiers, police and intelligence service members who lost their job, they did nothing else in their life other than fighting and serving their country but they got abandon and they used their skills and experience as killers in organised crime.
Such a shame...

For the uninitiated: the last scene where Balalaika was holding the hand of a crying boy in Afghanistan was the reason why she was kicked out from the Soviet military. Idk if the anime specifically talked about this, but this was mentioned (not shown) in the manga where she talks with the US special forces, I believe in the 2nd arc with the South American maid.

@@houseofmatrix6174 Actually the Afghan war was the Equivalent to Vietnam for the Soviets. As for why the short form is she was essentially an idealist for the cause. Russian command not so much. Granted my response in the Real World is "Well duh! Communism doesn't work." but as for character motivation it's easily understandable why she's essentially dead inside.

That "I said KNEEL!" line goes so hard every time I hear it. Such a satisfying moment that whole scene.
Black Lagoon deserves so much more recognition. So many awesome characters and the dub was really damn good

This is a wonderfully composed AMV. I like that you left in a lot of the dialogue and didn’t just drown it all out with loud music. Nailed the menacing nature of the character perfectly

I always imagined the punisher in black lagoon fighting with hotel moscow and tha lagoon company , a bunch of guys who doesnt believe in justice fighting with a man that is sick for vengeance and justice for his family

Just noticed that Japanese names from the board are written in a proper cirillic way ( In foreign movies it is common to write some nonsense when it comes to cirillic)/ Кстати, только заметил, что на стенде имена написаны нормально, а не тарабщина на кирилице как это часто бывает

This makes me wonder how to classify Balalaika.
She is not a villain.
Her drive for herself and her men to be recognized by her country for their military service and to keep them alive despite basically being state-less is somewhat admirable.
So if she was an antagonist to the main characters she could be an anti-villain. But she isn't.
She is kind of just a side character but that just doesn't do the character justice.
I guess she is just in a class of her own. 😁
She kinda is tho. Because she let go of her sense of justice and heroic intentions. Jaded by how the world treated her and her comrades, she became a crime boss. I think that's very compelling for her as a character. She may have some good in her, but she's not a good person anymore.
Best russion women in anime. Dont see better then she.

I wonder what Balalaika would think of the Sorry state of the Russian Military and the VDV paratroopers she was apart of in particular becoming a laughing stock in Ukraine?
I never bought into the "Win WWIII" by themselves b.s. line from the first moment I heard it over a decade ago; I always thought the Russian Military was overrated but even in my wildest dreams I didn't imagine it was This Bad (100,000 troops dead, wounded or missing, 1600 tanks destroyed or captured). The structural problems they have date all the way back to the Soviet era too. The Black Lagoon would be chuckling and giving sideways glances at Hotel Moscow if they were still around.
Obviously they couldn't win WW3 But I'd say Balalaika and her crew are better managed and capable compared to the modern VDV.
Probably why she was discharged actually, she was too free command based. She wasn't by the books like Soviet doctrine demanded and thus her group was discharged...
Lol the Russian paratroopers are literally the best in the world, rightly because of Ukraine not in spite of it.
They invaded hostomel and won without proper ground support, they held Kherson for months, when they left they went after soledar, infiltrated heavily defended fortified positions and allowed the armed forces to capture soledar and a lot of surrounding areas, eliminating thousands of enemies.
Only 90k combatants died in this war:
20k Russians and separatists and 70k Ukrainians and foreign volunteers.
Russia has not even taken 100k casualties yet, even though that figure has been floating around for 5 months at least.

Thinking back; Balalaika and the Rest of Hotel would probably become even more of a bunch of fatalistic nihilists after seeing Putin's Russia utterly fail in Ukraine and their Beloved VDV paratroopers humiliated.
It would emphasize this point for them; "The World you were born in no longer Exists"...
You mistake propaganda for reality. That being said, I think she would instead critique their naivety in thinking that they could trust the west to make peace. (Not to mention the likely destruction of Hotel Moscow by Putin when he came to power, as he effectively destroyed the mafia and organized crime groups, so I could imagine she'd be bitter about that as well) Regardless, Hostomol was taken, and the Paras were relieved. The VDV are still fighting on the front, even now.

It would seem my comment got deleted. But, regardless, Balalaika would have lamented their naivety in thinking they could trust the west. However, she would be proud that they not only took the airport of Hostomol, but held it long enough to get relieved, and that they continue fighting to this day, likely being jealous of their exploits herself. (all she wanted was to fight and be recognized after all, and these men would certainly get that, not to mention promotion and awards)
Putin must know why she does not like an ex-KGB figure.

If there is an FYE'S store in your area, you can find a Blu-ray and DVD version of the show that covers both seasons, which you can say is a Box Set of sorts. As for Roberta's Blood Trail I doubt it, but I am sure you can find one no sweat. If not Amazon should be a good place to start with as well. Hope this helps. Personal note: Roberta's Blood Trail should have been in the set as well. Good luck my friend.

The show was good but it was to much
Truth be told the badass female cliche is usually when a woman is commanding a bunch of men behind her. This is no different than Olivier Armstrong from Fullmetal Alchemist. People were salivating over her too, also in Marvel Spiderman with Silver Sable. It's always the one female too, never a group of them amongst the men, and even if so, they show the exact same "badass" personality instead of being diverse characters. Im glad Revy has character to her and not giving that cool, swa, trope I see so often. Sure she curses every chance she gets but still has some life to her instead of looking like she wants to be a part of the John Wick universe ( People in that universe all give off the same boring vibe who work for the Hotel). Yes I know Lagoon was way before this.
Ikr what kind of leader relies on their subordinates pffttt. I just think you don't want a strong female character you want a man hating character, would it have been better for you if Balalaika ridiculed her men at every moment? Revy is 100% a weaker female character then balalaika, she has almost no redeeming traits besides being able to kill people.
