whats the point of having him learn swordsman ship if he switches to tonfa immediately thats some poor writing just make it seem the writer has no idea what he wants from his characters and just throws everything there way for fan service
Tonfa could be for combat at a much closer range; or as a more defensive and reactionary weapon while the swords are offensive in nature. Additionally it could be the weapon better suited for using one of his chakra natures; Earth maybe? That or it could've been giving him a weapon that would work for non-lethal takedowns. It's possible that the author has a long-term plan in mind for the weapons Naruto gained; we can't know that until the next part of the story.
