  • Recording a Song with 4 Instruments?! - In this video we look at Recording a Song with 4 Instruments?! When I was watching some live music, I thought about how best we can replicate a fully recorded/produced song in a live situation. So I decided to challenge myself to see if I could create a decent replication of my song “miss u like crazy” using only drums, bass guitar, one guitar and vocals. I also chose to limit myself to using only 3 EQ parameters, one reverb and one delay, like something you’d find on an analogue mixing desk.
In this video, we look at the song, initial thoughts and then look at each individual element and how we can use it to replicate the song. This video is made for beginner to intermediate engineers, producers and artists.
    Topics and Timings:
    1. Intro (0:00 - 1:15)
    2. The Song (1:15 - 1:52)
    3. Initial Thoughts (1:52 - 2:34)
    4. The Bass Guitar (2:34 - 3:33)
    5. The Guitar (3:33 - 5:54)
    6. The Vocals (5:54 - 6:32)
    7. EQ and Effects (6:32 - 8:38)
    8. Comparison (8:38 - 9:42)
    9. Final Thoughts (9:42 - 10:32)

I've done this many times when I used a 4 track cassette recorder. 1 bass track, 1 drum track, 1 rythum track, and the last track was shared with vocals and lead guitar. 😊 Funny because now I rarely use more than 12 tracks, I like simple organic recordings

All you missed in this video…. One thing… if u add reverb or some sort of plugins to make widespread stereo…this 4 instrument would have sound just as like original..awesome effort…great explanation…your video title and context of video everything just perfect 👍

First of all = over 4K subscribers - that's fantastic! Congrats! Second, when I first the title I thought - who needs this video? BUT, then I watched it and I have to say it really opened my eyes. I tend to overdo my productions and a friend has told me that he produces based on how he imagines a band would play it. This video really solidified that idea in my mind and will likely influence my direction. Great video - and great thoughts.

I loved the tone of the bass, my bass always sounds muddy and boomy. I’ll try those eq settings next time. Can I suggest doing a video on eq and compression if you’ve not already done it, and if you have can you post the link, I enjoy your style of teaching as you don’t get too bogged down in technical jargon. Thank you.

Hi. Excellent video. To more accurately reflect a live sound you should have had the drummer playing too loud and the bass player being slightly out of tune. In my experience.

I liked the 4 element version better. I thought the vocals sat way better in the mix.
