That was a great day of fishing Caleb. What baits and technique’s were you using? I’ve fished Elk creek with live minnows and salmon eggs. Caught a few but not like what you were catching.
I would suggest any 6’6” medium action rod. It may be a little on the heavier side for trout, but that will allow him to use it for both effectively. You could even do 7 foot medium action. Stick with a 6-8 pound test line and you should be okay in most cases. Hope that helps! Good luck and tight lines!
I am hoping to make a video this year on gear and setups. But this particular day single eggs were killer. We were using size 14-16 hooks, 1-3 split shot, depending on depth and current speed, set about 8 inches away from the hook, and we use a float set at about 1.5 times the depth we think we’re fishing. Essentially you want it to hit bottom get stuck then just adjust your float little by little until you’re only ticking the bottom every so often. That should put you right in the strike zone. We also throw live minnows this way and we just nose hook them. Don’t go through the head and kill them just through the lips. Hope this helps!
