l learned the hard way about plated hardware. Does anyone want brass plated steel rivets? No! My customer, who l had sold a filet knife to (I make knives) brought back the sheath with rusty rivets. l thought they were solid as the Tandy packaging didn't say. l went through all my hardware and threw out a lot of stuff including snaps. lf it doesn't say solid brass, assume it isn't!

I bought some new brass buckles and belt loops and antiqued them. One buckle and both loops turned out spot on, but the second buckle came from a different supplier and I think the alloying process was different because it just won't create a decent patina like the other. The one that turned out good is on a belt that I used English Bridle Pro dye on and the combo looks looks really good. Found out my rivets are plated, but I intend to swap them out once I find some solid brass one's.

Is there any metal that can be used with chrome tanned leather? If I’m making bags out of chrome tanned leather, what kind of hardware can I use for the rivets and buckles etc?

My mother gave me some bear claws. I was thinking of adding them to a knife sheath as a decorative item to knife sheaths for my boys. Any thoughts on how to attach her them?

I wish you guys would make solid polished copper roller buckles. The only online source is selling them for $50 a buckle.

Thank you for the suggestion! I will pass this along to our new products team. If we get enough requests for something then we certainly look in to adding it.

Why does certain buckles cord and grow green funk in some belts

Yawan, great question! This is common when a “chrome-tan” leather meets metal. A "veg-tan" leather is tanned with natural elements and won’t do this, but the chrome tans have a high chromium salt content and that reacts with most metals. This is why it’s not a good idea to use Chromes for holsters and knife sheaths.
