The Joker with trench coat is from the expressions pack where you could swap heads and his jacket/coat - I don’t remember it being a build a figure. It had eight swappable heads including one with a hat and one of the heads featured on the later release (the one in your review). The expression on the version with the hat was the same on the original release (without hat) and the later re release packaged with Mad Love. The first releases had rally fragile brittle joints. There was also a Harley and Batman in this series released in 2018. The flat hands are episode specific joker robot gun hands from “Christmas with the Joker” and were also in the expressions pack.

Great review as always DSD! Gotta point out though as a fellow collector - Technically this is the second and the third releases of The New Batman Adventures Batman right there under McFarlane. The original release when DC Direct was still independent had the blue packaging and had BOTH CAPE TYPES - meaning you had the choice of having Bats with the cape on the shoulders and flowing straight down or open and it fluttering in the wind. There were more accessories and options to play with.
The BTAS Joker with the jacket is essentially the stripped down, accessory lacking version from the Expressions Pack that had a LOT of heads and accessories. One of them alternate heads is what went to that grimacing Joker figure from the orange packaging.
It’s good McFarlane Toys is offering these again for collectors who want to catch up or fill in holes they missed, but otherwise yes the paint and subtle changes made to sculpting are there too. It’s totally a preference thing and you vote with your wallet whether you wanna get these or hunt down the original DC Direct figures of the DCAU line - the ones that were made anyway at least.

All animated figures should be cheaper. There are less details and textures to mimic the drawing styles. Many of them are also smaller. Otherwise, there should be more accessories or make them duo packs - a small and big figures like Killer Croc and Batgirl or Bane and Robin to balance out the amount of plastic used.

The 2021 figures weren't made by McFarlane. McFarlane just distributed them. DC Direct went out of business, but these were too far down the pipeline so McFarlane became the distribution service for the remaining products. The figures hitting stores now are remold of that original line, with a build a figure that did not feature before with DC direct. I was at SDCC last year at the McFarlane toys panel, and Todd talked a out all of this.

You know this brings up a whole other question? How many of us actually do want crazy amount of articulation. I only bring it up because when I grow up you had five points head to arms too late. I was watching a CZcamsr today and he was like I don't need all this articulation and it made me think most of our collectors just set it on a shelf is it really matter at this point. You're just going to stick it on a shelf anyways I like the articulation but usually once I put it on the shelf I don't usually who's it or mess with it again. I guess it made me think more cuz I have my original Superboy figure from Kenner and I honestly think that figure is fantastic and he's only got five points of reticulation and to be honest I think he looks better than most Todd's figures if he brings out.

Perspective is the answer, I never really thought people would want less articulation on figures to make them look better or cheaper, but to me and other collectors who like to experiment with posing, it is needed, I love posing my figures in crazy aerial or jumping poses. I know this doesn´t apply to all lines or brands, and to all collectors, but to me articulation is as important as sculpt, just my opinion.

I realize they're not perfect but why doesn't he just build off of his Batman, Superman, and Green Lantern figures? Give us a Batman Beyond/JLU style Joker, sculpt it yourself. Don't be lazy and resort to what's essentially plagiarism.
