    Overall the video was useful. The section on variables was particularly useful. I would have liked to begin with an overview of how PM works at an architectural level and how it relates to the Lightroom architecture. From the video it appears that PM adds the maximum value when you are Photoshop centric.

      I am not positive what you are asking. Are these Raw files, jpg or what? There isn't an actual folder field in the metadata. If you have photoshop and open your image by using the path, File/File Info. those are you field options. If you are using raw files most programs with change the side .xmp file. If you are using .jpg file. You can just click on the "i" and type in a field and it will automatically save to the .jpg file. You can save a template and apply it to all the image that folder.

    Great video Can you explain how to move pictures in the contact sheet. I am trying to put the photos in a specific order to get a work flow. I thought maybe the slide show would do it but I can't seem to figure out how to move the images around.

    • @Jcwphoto
      @Jcwphoto  Před 2 lety

      Order is dependent on the sort. There are a variety of different types of sorting options. I don't think you can place them in order. You could rename them like 1, 2, 3, etc to make it work for you . I use culling or the colors to sort my images but I never need them in a specific order.

    Thanks John. This was a really helpful video. What brought me here was that I'm totally new to Photomechanic 6. I ingested a collection of photos from lots of different places and photo shoots, and most of them got the wrong IPTC info. How do I batch process change them to the correct information? So far Photomechanic is incredibly fast and easy to use. But it has a learning curve.

      Hit Ingest which is cmd or ctrl G. Click the Metadata IPTC Template. Fill out what you want it to say. Open a folder select all the images. Go to Image/and select Apply Metadata IPTC Template to photos. That will change everything.

    Question, does photomechanic automatically save your work? I’m simply tagging my favorites before I put them into Lightroom but don’t want to exit and lose all of my tags or organization. Thanks!

    • @Jcwphoto
      @Jcwphoto  Před 2 lety

      If they are raw files it saves the info in the .xmp file automatically. Truthfully, if you are using Lightroom, I would not use Photo Mechanic. Photo Mechanic is a browser like Bridge is a Browser. Lightroom has a browser built in. I would just do the process of tagging/culluing in Lightroom instead. Lightroom is slower than PM but if you use Lightroom you have to catalog no matter what. If you use PM I would open the image in Photoshop. If it is a RAW file it will open in Adobe Camera Raw first. All RAW files need to be converted in a RAW processor. The develop module in Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw are exactly the same, they just look different. Hope this helps.

    Hi John
    Is “Ingesting” a necessary first step? Can I use Photo Mechanic to cull and copy from the SD Card? Just plug in the card, tag the photos I want to keep with a colour, filter view by that tag and then just select all and copy straight over to my Project Folder? The reason I’d prefer to do it this way is because I don't like the idea of saving to my HD and taking up space and/or I don't want to be constantly writing to, erasing, and writing over the same partition on my HD over and over again. I just want to cull and copy straight from the SD Card.
    Thanks for your help :)

    • @Jcwphoto
      @Jcwphoto  Před 4 lety

      Yes, you can do it. It will be slow but less reliable. I would suggest a dedicated external hard drive. As long as you keep the .xmp files with the raw files everything would work fine.

    • @Jcwphoto

    • @lachlan1980

      @@Jcwphoto Hi, sorry, still don't get it - Why would I be working off an external drive? Basically I just want to use Photo Mechanic as a combo image previewer and file explorer. A way to quickly view what's on the SD card, see and tag the good images from the bad, then filter so I can select all on just the tagged/good images and copy them to where I'm actually going to work on them on my hard drive. So if Photo Mechanic can let me do just that why would I need an external hard drive?

    • @Jcwphoto
      @Jcwphoto  Před 4 lety

      Above you said you don't like the idea of writing to your hard drive, plus so many images will quickly fill up your local drive. This is why I suggested an external drive. You are better off off working on a hard drive. I work off and ssd. An SD card is not made to work off of. They are the weak links in the process. However, you can do what you said above, it will work. My suggestion would be to import, cull(tag the ones you like) then you can easily select all the one you don't like and remove them. The is a quicker and safer process. Either way will work.

    Does anyone know if PM6 runs on the new MacBook with M1 chip (so called Apple Silicon)?

      Call camera bits but Rosetta 2 should be able to emulate it.

    Hi John. Have a quick question. When I do my culling on PM it´s creating a sidecare the xmp I think? Can it be embedded or the culling wont be respected if I drag them to Capture One? What I would love is to do my Culling on PM but once I import them to C1 I see the culling but without generating sidecars or whatever. Is it possible?

    • @Jcwphoto
      @Jcwphoto  Před 4 lety

      Yes, it creates an .xmp file. You can't overwrite a raw file. Any metadata or raw editing changes to a raw file are stored in the .xmp You can delete the .xmp it won't hurt anything but any rating, labeling and metadata you have done in the culling process will be lost. It is just the way the process works. It isn't specific to PM but to RAW.

      @@Jcwphoto Thanks so much! :). I understand now. Let ask you something. If I do my rating in PM then upload the folder to C1, and take the rating off there and re rate them inside c1, and erase the xmp then I will have the same ratings just made on c1 based on what I did in PM, right? Another q. If it´s a Raw thing why when I do my rating on C1 why I don´t see any lose xmps?

    • @Jcwphoto
      @Jcwphoto  Před 4 lety

      You should need to erase what you did in PM. Capture one can read .xmp. I a pretty sure C1 by default stores the info in the catalog(which I hate) You can change the preferences to have it create an .xmp file if you like. Don't overthink the process. Figure out what works for you and stick to that. I like .xmp better that cataloging because you can move the files from location to location and never lose that metadata.

      @@Jcwphoto So basically the only way to have C1 read my culling and rating would be to keep the xmp right?

    What don't you like about converting to DNG? Thanks

    • @Jcwphoto
      @Jcwphoto  Před 4 lety

      I don't dislike DNG. Adobe came out with .dng because the wanted everyone to convert to a universal file type. Canon and Nikon never followed. If DNG was a superior to cr2 or nef I would use it. It just seem pointless to convert from one raw to another. .dng is compressed a bit more and you save space but not enough to make it worth the time.

      @@seamuswarren I didn’t make up the terminology. If you don’t lime it call it what you call it doesn’t matter. Deleteing xmps is a mistake. I really don’t understand why anyone has an issue. Shoot jpg instead of raw and they will disappear.

      If you are on a mac just use text edit. should be on your mac already. Otherwise Open Office is open source. Just use a plain text document.

    • @Jcwphoto
      @Jcwphoto  Před 3 lety

      Well that is because it would be an illogical process. Lightroom already has an integrated browser and the ability to tag images. The process for PM would be to send straight to Adobe Camera Raw which is the same as the Lightroom develop module and then to Photoshop.
