I have done the same exact thing for about 30 years. This is the season and they are so many of them. I now use a much more formidable weapon. I now use a badminton racket, it is light and fast. I can easily take our dozens at a time. They are such a destructive insect. If you don’t live around them you will never understand how much damage they can do. Actually I use several Carpenter Bee traps and they are very effective. All they are is a small cedar box with a hole drilled into it at an upward angle. The hole leads them into an empty dark box with ams,all hole at the bottom. In that hole is a small water bottle threaded into a matching cap. The bees fly toward the hole where there is light and they are trapped. I have several of these traps around my house

I had the same problem, but in town. So, I pulled the rifled sleeve out of a crossman 760, and stoked it with handfulls of #7 shot. It was like a blunderbus, but out to say 7 yards it was effective, and it just didnt have enough power to really damage anything past 10 or so. Going out at night and caulking them solid in their holes helps too.

When I first saw this "bee hunting" I was intrigued, being in a more suburban location prevents me from using a firearm for these pests....But, I found the Gamo Viper Express air shotgun! Using .22 caliber "reloadable" shotshells with #9 shot it does a nice job of "controlling" these airborne drillbits. The gun is single shot and takes effort to charge, but keeps the shooting eye sharp! (works well for lanternflies here in the NE too)

Proper insecticide in the holes, put some traps around to help cut down on more bees coming, fill the holes best you can and seal em. A good coat of pretty much any kind of sealant or wood finish on the cabin too can help keep the bees off.
