Swimmer that knows what he's doing is far safer than some kook out on a surfboard.

I’m a Texas surfer and was visiting a friend decades ago who took me surfing here. I called ahead of time and asked if I needed my 3/2 shortie or full suit and he said, nah, you’ll be fine. I show up at the beach to meet him and everyone has full suits on and I instantly realized-oh shit, he’s an ex-navy seal. Wrong guy to ask. I lasted about sixty seconds 😂

I applaud the dude. He appears to be a capable swimmer with some stamina. He just wanted to experience rare big waves. I can relate.

During an El Nino year, the ocean in So Cal can be balmy in the winter. I think during this period temps were in the low 60s.
I am from Santa Cruz and those types of temps during our Summer are almost tropical lol.

The only danger here is when he goes to catch a wave and a board rider doesn't see him and accidentally drops in on him. Been there done that, the board tends to win always.

Going into cold water unprepared is asking for problems. He seems okay for now but physics, meaning hypothermia is going to happen. It's not a question of if, but when, so hopefully he makes it back to the beach before it seizes him up. At that point it's a rescue and life threatening.
