Was the internet WRONG?! Picking up our 2022 WRX

- Even though there has been a lot of hate online about the new 2022 WRX, we decided to make up our own minds about the platform. We flew all the way to Utah to pick up our base World Rally Blue WRX and drove it all the way home to Iowa! By the end of the drive we were much more acquainted with the car and we give our feedback on the pros and the cons of this new chassis.
For all your aftermarket Subaru parts check out our website:

Keen to see the amount of power that people will be getting out of this car once the aftermarket has some decent time to flourish!!
Same here....Didn't hate it when it came out, but after seeing it in person and test driving....It's grown on me a LOT!! Great blank canvas and really looking forward to your progress on it!
I'm not a wheel guy but I love the wheels. I was waiting for the new STI so I sold my 2017 base model WRX and bought a low mileage 2020 STI . I am so happy. A great video guys. I can't wait to see all of the new modifications you do to Blue.
Congrats on the Sti check your oil weekly. My 21 sti eats half a quart every 1500-2000 miles.
This is why you can’t look to the internet to decide which car to buy. A year ago everyone hated the car and now it’s everyone and singing it’s praises. This is why YOU should buy the car that YOU like and makes YOU happy. Cheers. Thanks for the videos
Not biased at all. Channel called subaru that bought a subaru wrx. Completely trust your opinion guys.
Saw this in real life in Australia today at dealership. Looks great. Blue with manual. I really like the new BRZ as well, which hands down wins looks dept. but the new wrx looks really good in real life and captures the spirit of the WRX well.
Thanks guys! Looking forward to see how the new model shapes up with some mods. Glad to hear the engine is more impressive than the 3HP spec difference.
Just put my down payment on a blue one. Your first smile reaction says it all. First WRX I have ever had.
Excellent video guys. I just got a '21 WRX in November so I won't be trading in, but I will concede that it is an incremental improvement over the VA. If Subaru pulls out a facelift and an option to have the adaptive dampers and Recaro's in the lower trims (and maybe some STi-ish things?) then It will definitely be tempting, but my '21 with a few small mods and running an E30 ethanol mix pulls a little harder than the '22 I test drove. I am stoked to see what you guys can do with it!
Love it, just got mine 2 days ago, major features and fresh feel
Only thing I took away from this was....damn, Utah is beautiful!
Please keep the new mods / parts coming! Would love to see you guys transform this..... interesting looking new WRX!
yeah looks.. not quite right yet
Good job on the video boys. Noticeable step up in quality and the editing was great
Thanks, I had fun making this one! - Foster
Love the marketing technique ! Love y’all’s products! Keep it up ! Can’t wait to see more , y’all might shift the general consciousness about the car.
I looked at a WRB one today at the dealer even had the white plastic on it still. Your reaction on the backend is pretty spot on... it doesn't look as bad in person as it does in pictures online... however, that statement is very misleading without the facial and vocal expressions. It is only about 20% better in person (that is probably generous). If they only did paint matched bumper it might have been alright, but the lines are jarring coming out from the trunk, so it is quite noticeable. Also I noticed the headlights don't look as small in person as online (online the car looks like it is squinting). Sadly, the fender gladding still has me think Crosstrek even in person... I am glad they got the engine right as it is a slug in the Ascent. I actually think I prefer the 2 screens of the base. It looks better, more functional, and easier to replace for an aftermarket stereo.
Could you guys do a video on the dual screens. I am looking at getting a base model but not sure if I wasn't to spring for the dual screens.
im looking at buying a wrx sport model its got lumbar support in the seats.. you think these seat are better than base model?
Great video guys!! 👍👌
This REALLY needs some more options from the factory. Something like a blackout package or night package that would black out the mirror caps and blacked out rims would already be a huge aesthetic improvement.
Still not into it. It’s going to need ALOT of cosmetic mods to start looking decent. IMO I think cars should be able to look decent off the lot and use mods to enhance the look
bingo. would have loved conservative styling like my 17
I used to work for dealerships which gave me the opportunity to drive all sorts of used and new cars. That experience made realize that most sharp looking cars out there were actually a disappointment that I could not justify owning compared to other fugly cars that were actually the real deal performance cars that put a grin on my face when I drove them.
It looks wayyy better in person. It's weird
When are the aftermarket taillights and exhausts coming?
I Just bought 2022 WRX Premium. I really like the car, not thrilled with the info screen interaction but guess I'll learn.
Cant wait to see what you guys do with it. Iag already making their wrx looking really good so i can see the potential. Even so the no sti variant really killed it for me but who knows
The lack of a STI is making me want a Corolla GR Four instead.
@@scipher99 You can't get a gr corolla, production is extremely limited. And if you can get one, expect to pay $20k more for it than this wrx. As for no Sti version, well this version is actually just as quick and better handling than the outgoing sti. All the while being cheaper!
@@steve8803 I ended up importing a GTR R33 Skyline AWD with 26K miles instead. The R33 being the least sought after GTR the cost was only 52K for a near mint condition example.
I got mine a month ago. Magnetite grey premium and I love everything about it. Looking forward to the performance parts.
I got solar orange love it don't plan on doing any mods. Well maybe a BOV
@@DylanVBWRX can't go wrong with a BOV. Gotta get the turbo noises haha
@@ZibrayMusic this was in fact a lie, I lied to myself. I've since invested in mods 😂
@@DylanVBWRX lol what you got so far?
@@ZibrayMusic shift stop, rear diff inserts, pitch stop (not installed yet)
Drop in filter, and trying to order a JB4 asap.
Wrong framing of the question.
Was the vast majority of people who saw this incorrect, or are we? I think the answer to that question is obvious.
I got the new 2022 WRX Limited myself. I'm currently repaint all the plastics
I'm wondering if there's custom UEL headers available for these cars
The engine is a nice upgrade. The styling is just a miss. The bulging out grill. The rear end that sticks out. Top trim only comes with a cvt which are junk. I'd take a 22 brz over a wrx. Thankfully nissan is bringing back the Z.
I second that, it's plain looking and is almost ugly.
Could have 500whp. Still looks liek ass. Subaru already signaled they are killing the WRX. Sti Gone and the wrx is ugly. You will be missed. Bring in the 400z and the manual supra
why are you watching WRX videos if you want a Nissan.
@@kendrickdeporter2233 I currently own a wrx. Why couldn't I watch this even if I want a Nissan? That makes no sense.
@Randy The Z and BRZ are weekend warriors. The wrx is an all season, all year round vehicle that can act both as a weekend warrior, and a daily for a family. Completely different markets.
Great video guys I love SubiSpeed, but this new wrx is not for me I’ll be keeping my 18 base wrx for now.
yes. the only thing really objectively wrong is the cladding which I personally like. everything else is great and its already gotten plenty of glowing reviews
Love the channel
Here I am trying to get one into Dave Wright in Cedar Rapids, and y’all start the video with ‘we couldn’t find one in Iowa,’ lol!
You know why "the internet" didn't love them at first? Because the ones who did the first reviews are sponsored reviewers. They feel like they have to nitpick things in order to keep some credibility.
One thing that was repeatedly bashed was the fender cowling. They COMPLETELY glossed over the fact that they would make the care more scratch-resistant in day-to-day use.
Likewise, they also said it doesn't feel more refined. I disagree. This is a lot more refined of a car than other recent Subarus I've been in. It's quieter in the cabin than I was expecting; no problem at 80 mph. Quieter than my old 2012 Accord EX, for example.
The engine sounds great, but it's quiet too; can't hear it with the radio on at any decent volume. I think it's a good balance between being quiet enough for expressway road trips and loud enough to hear when you want to.
Fuel economy is criticized, and rightfully so. Even driving carefully, I haven't managed to get more than 25 mpg yet. (mixed suburban driving) You might think it's a fair price to pay for the 270 hp 2.4 L turbo, but the Audi S3 (for example) makes more power, more torque AND gets better fuel economy. The problem isn't the gearing either: at 80 mph, it is right around 3k RPM and won't pull hard at all from there; I need to downshift to 4th or even 3rd to get proper passing power. It might be the aerodynamic drag of the hood scoop or it's just not that efficient of an engine.
The plastic diaper in the back looks bad, even in person. The quad exhaust looks LEGIT, but not quite enough to make me not notice the diaper.
The ride is quite firm and Subaru made the ridiculous decision not to sell adjustable dampers except on the $42k GT model. It's firm enough that it is a bad car to drive in places with bad pavement. (like Chicago, Kenosha, WI, etc.) If that is what you're going to fix with coil-overs, then go for it, but for the love of God, don't make it any firmer! If I were to buy again, I might not go with the WRX, but an Accord 2.0 Turbo, even though it means I'd lose the manual trans and AWD. (and that's saying a LOT, living in WI)
So far, the "infotainment" has not been problem free, even to a tech guy like me. I managed to set the location, but the weather widget keeps going back to Washington, D.C. Very annoying. Apple Car Play keeps crashing. I wonder if this is a trick to try to sell Sirius XM, which works flawlessly.
I hope you guys will go with tasteful stuff, instead of the usual rice boy mods...
On point about the fenders. My hatch gets door dings all the time right on the fender lip. If it's not a door ding, the rim will pull and warp it.
I'm leaving the plastic moldings untouched on the 22 because it's just going to get chipped.
I just ignor the rear bumper, eventually someone will make a nice looking poly cover.
Quad tips look really small next to my invidia Q300, even the hatch spt looked more balanced. It's ok though, nice aftermarket pieces will soon come for this car. Hang in there and enjoy your car.
I appreciate your critiques of your car. I think if they "pulled in" the back bumper of the car, it would look significantly better. I've heard great things about the performance though, minus fuel economy. Reviewers were getting worse fuel economy than they were getting in their trucks.
I still hope you enjoy your purchase.
I got the base 22' WRX in base as well...I don't mind the car being barebones with less tech features :), less things to break. Also, didn't need heated seats and moon roof.
The premium is the way to go! Especially in white
I just don't get why we only ended up with 3 more HP than the FA20. What's the torque limit of the GT's CVT?
Emissions would be my guess. I’m sure it can be tuned for a lot more than the fa20 is capable of.
@@spritekipz01 understandable but Subaru making statements that it can be tuned seems counterintuitive to them literally denying your warranty for the simplest of things. 😬
Interesting, as here in Canada the base model is not available in WRB which is ticking a lot of us off. Personally I just changed from my leased '20 to a leased WRB Sport Tech which is equivalent to your Premium and waiting to achieve 1600 km (1000 miles) before pushing the car. Really need those steering responsive led headlights due to a lot of driving at night on Country roads.
Is that cat-bak exhaust legal in California ?
Just test drove one recently. Rev hang issue has been significantly improved compared to the last gen.
New WRX design everyone hates it but then 2 years later everybody wants one. Thats how its always been since 2002.
In 2004 when I first got a 2003 WRX I remember the side skirts were black so i had them painted. After a few years every single bug eye had painted sideskirts. I think eventually everyone will paint theirs but it's a huge mistake for Subaru not to have them painted from the factory. -4 time WRX owner.
Been waiting for yall to get the damn car lmfao
The first 2 my dealer got..Sat there for 6 weeks. When the 2015 came out...took me 6 months to find one to test drive. You be the judge. 🤷♂️
i can bet the base model drives better then other trims. It is lighter and better on gas for sure, smaller wheels and no sunroof are big savings!
why would anyone get the base? I don't get it. Just wait for a premium or limited
As a car enthusiast, I hate the look of it we can always modify it later.
Damn i been with Amazon for too long. I noticed the Amazon van zip by at 4:44 instantly lol
anyone knows the rim? is it 5x114??
Internet was right!
The car has character
These capacitive inputs OEMs are putting in vehicles now make me want to walk everywhere. I want buttons, dials, and knobs to turn things on and off. I've lost count of the number of times the tablet in my 20 limited has booted sideways or screwed up when I am changing from radio to USB or whatever. At least I still have buttons for my HVAC functions.
Great engine, good enough interior, AWD ; solid for the price
has Subaru improved the paint? how many rock chips did you get on the hood/fenders from your 1k mile journey? did you use a race-wrap or similar to protect the front end? my experience w/my '19 (VA) wrx base taught me to NEVER buy a base trim Subaru (all models). At the very least (for daily driving) buy premium and up. if you are going to swap EVERY conceivable thing you can think of (cuz your an influencer), then the base model makes sense; but if you aren't going to drop $8k+ into a brand new car, start w/the premium or limited trims. Now time for VA/VB head-to-heads (amazing what .4L more of displacement does)
Seems like the VB has significantly less orange peel. No rock chips from our road trip! In terms of it's longevity only time will tell...
Why do you say dont buy the base?
You’re goofy. Go use a paint thickness guage. No different than any other new car… 🤡
Did I just hear Colorado? Just got mine 3 days ago off the lot. McLaughlin Subaru is only 3 hrs from you guys. I think you just wanted a road trip on the company dime and I don’t blame you.
Still waiting for the WRX video. I mean this Crosstrek is a step up from previous years.
Yea I see why Kevin bounced over to brz. I ever get rid of my STI, next car won't be a subi.
Love this car
Did you guys pay sticker or get gouged?
I LOVE MY 22 WRX BLAK ON BLACK
Dyno stock vs full bolt on and a tune. Even better with flex fuel. Yes I know about Cobb. Figure it out. Please!
The front does look pretty nice.
Great car 🚗
Answer to you title: No. Next video please
Are you calling them a title?
Since the sti is gone for now, should’ve averaged out the hp and torque between the base and sti and apply it to the new engine. Why not, since it’s going to be around for 6 yrs
With no disrespect to anyone else that like this car, I can't wrap my mind around it. I'm blessed to have bought a 21' STI in December. I rather buy a small truck to keep the low miles in my car
Yea super glad i grabbed a 20 wrx. I was gonna wait but glad i did t.
If they just put the FA24 engine in the existing VA WRX, I'm sure the Subaru community would have been quite happy
That infotainment LMAO wtfff

Or the WTF wheel fenders?
Whole car visually is just WTF? For me.
I mean bone stock a VA is pretty damn bland, especially from the back let’s be real here, I have a 2020. Bone stock looks like a Camry.
Kill it with fire. In person the body gaps are so wide it’s not even funny. The base looks even worse than the upper trims which I didn’t think was possible. Anything done to it will look better.
I’m looking at getting a 2022 premium but I bet it’s going to look better with a Sri wing and color matched fender flares
Look up IAG's 22 WRX. The car isn't as bad as people keep making it out to be. New style, same new conplaints.
Thanks for the video. I hate those wheels and wheel arches though. The arches make me think of a Yaris or Echo.
Base model with 17 inch wheels. It is a crime that they do that.
The only way that a car is worth having is that you should like the car as full-stock oem. Now with the 2022 WRX, the only way to look decent is for you to put tons of upgrades. Just happy to have the 2020 STI WR blue all stock.
15 wrb sti here. YUP. bone stock except for an axle back exhaust. Still excited to see what people do with this new gen. I wouldn't be surprised if they do a face lift in 2 years and change the rear end.
Pretty much how I feel as well, we shouldn’t have to spend thousands to make the car halfway decent looking
Its really not that bad in person, the fa24 is really smooth. Coming from an sti hatch and 22 owner.
@@kea1234 Doubt it, subaru today is different. Once the sales figure dip (which already happened), they will have the excuse to kill off the line. wrx doesn't money anyway.
Same with every wrx in existence
It’s like they purposely made the infotainment system funky just to make it lesser than. lol
Nice civic fellas.
Is that FA24 same as brz? obviously without the turbo
Yes

All I heard on this was this and this is awesome because alot of the crap stuff put on or taken off we can make aftermarket parts for…
And then claim it “feels faster” hahaha. I believe the trq comes on 300-500rpm sooner, Lol. For 25% more engine whooooooaaaa…lol
This car is a bad joke. No amount of spin is going to change that. Spend 10k-20k to make it look better after paying msrp??? No thanks.
@@4gedcarbon537 yeah you shouldn’t need to make over a ton of shit just to make it look even decent lmao. I hate that “wait till aftermarket” excuse. At least the 15+ and older gens still look aggressive and cool stock.
@@wrxhex Exactly . I have a 2018 wrx….tweaking and modifying to your individual tastes are one thing, but this needs ALOT just to start!
@@wrxhex 100% agree. I had a 2016 STi and it didn’t look as cheap as this.
This cars a flop and the main reason probably they took the STi out of the line up. Don’t be surprised if we see them using the “new” STi to push there new EV/Hybrid direction
Lmao this right here. I'm more impressed by the GR86/BRZ with the 2.4L than I am with the WRX. Even the 0-60 times are the same as the out going 2.0L.
deng, the looks suddenly changed when it got lowered.
Not a fan of the rear end mainly, a few other things as well.
Where in Iowa, I have had mine 2 weeks here in quad cities
Des Moines
If money was about the same, would you choose the the 2022 Subaru WRX or the Toyota GR Corolla?
Lol that’s an easy answer
Honestly I wished a Moonroof delete option is possible.
I walked into the dealer yesterday wanting to like this car so bad, but left disappointed. Looking beyond how the car looks in white, and the price out the door(Limited w/ warranty) $43k, the interior was overall pretty nice. My biggest issue was sitting above the car and not in it, while reaching down for a long handled short throw shifter. The new motor is very smooth and linear, but also makes the car feel a lot more mundane and less sporty. To be honest I think my overall expectations were set a bit to high, but I left feeling like I just test drove a turbo outback or something.
I pray someone makes a c light mod for the headlights 😉😉😉
If they don't, someone will do the mod on the side. Too many headlight retrofit'ers out there
@@Rad1oD3mon facts
I just drove a '22 WRX Premium with the moonroof and Harmon Kardon stereo and I was more impressed than I thought I'd be. It already had the short-throw shifter. The steering is lighter than I'd like (and it's too bad there's no sport mode to make it heavier) but man, that thing in the corners: awesome! Looking forward to keeping up with your mods.
Just dropped in to say...
No, no it was not.
Is the steering wheel peeling yet🤣🤣🤣
I own a BMW M135i and don't feel that the WRX is much quieter (specially considering the engine size difference). The WRX exhaust sounds throaty and robust to me, showing its sporty soul. People complaining about this car being quiet are either youngsters or people that just like to tune cars for the sake of it (or to show of).
The previous FA 20 was an amazing motor once you replace the rods you can get a lot of power especially if you push it to the top end and do it relatively reliably.... now the connecting rods on the new wrx are almost 2x as thick as they were and it will be something else for tuning lol
Great motor once you replace everything
you guys know your subies and why we buy them
dont see any problem with the car. atleast it looks somewhat unique compared to all the other sedans who look alike.
I saw the new WRX at the New York auto show. Most people who talk shit about it will see it in person and like it
Stop hating the car it looks really sick let’s just accept something different and work in your car this car is made to work on in 🔥🔥
the grip is there but the speed isn't. the car design is a major let down.
Never realized how short Foster was, or is Kevin just really tall. Can't wait to see what you guys do to this atrocity though.
I was on a downhill slope! it was a bit of an optical illusion 😂 Also Kevin is very tall - Foster
It's a good car but the competition is stronger this year than past few years. However I think Subaru is moving towards the outdoor crowd which doesn't make much sense releasing a sedan and not a WRX wagon which is what the majority of the Crosstrek owners want a more potent offroader.
Outback turbo
Biggest letdown no Brembos! Exhaust sounds like crap and a STI price and no leather seats! Gt model gets all the goodies and manual gets stripped. Unpainted cladding sucks.
I was a dealer today getting my 21 sti limited serviced they tried to sell me a 22 Wrx premium for 7 k less than I paid for my Sti limited 8 months prior lmao.
It looks a lot better if you close your eyes.
I miss my 2013 hatch.
can you say how much it will cost to make Subaru mistakes right? every other channel just makes the videos and show the car painted. meanwhile I want to know how much in top of the car is need it to make it right.
...depends on your definition of "right". If you are talking about the f/r bumpers, and side skirts; think in the ball park of $300-400 each for either wrap or paint and about the same for the skirts. if you are talking fender flares, I can see $600-ish (Grimmspeed asks $540 for the TRAILS flares for the crosstrek). As far replacement pieces or lip kits; full kits could be in the $1k range with lips and skirts similar to today's prices for VA cars. Carbon Fiber will just make things more expensive. Wheels and tires are on you.
@@K03sport daaam. All that just to get rid of the plastic 🤔😅
Coil over 1500, Brembos brake kit 3k, rims 1500-3k, paint bumpers 600 each, exhaust 1400, various cosmetic improvements 1-2k. Power mods 2-5k.
Toooo similar to the previous generation IMO. I drove my 2015 and then drove the 2022 and decided to just stick with the 15. If you’re new to the Subie squad it may be worth it but if you have the previous Gen (especially if modded) it’s going to take some years before this may seem like a worthwhile option. The cabin on the more luxury models is about the best reason to buy a 2022 along with the steering response and potential power from the engine. Otherwise, it’s a meh 🫤
The internet wasn't wrong about this car at all. No one has ever really said it wouldn't drive well or feel good driving. That is almost a given for a subaru no matter what. When you look at the car for what it is though, a WRX, They could have and should released it with more power. The looks of the car are a major disappointment too. I think most everyone can agree that the car will absolutely look good with after market improvements, but none of us should buy the car with the idea that we have to spend $5000 just to make it look good. Fixing the flares, painting the flares. Painting the bumpers, swapping out the tails. No doubt in my mind that the aftermarket will make this car look 1000X better. I believe that what most people hate is that you basically have to put money into the car to just make it look better and to give it the performance that it should have come with in a 2022 MY car. 268 hp was fine back then, but with no STI and it being 2022, the competition should have driven this car to the 300 mark. Especially with the price point it is now coming in at. No doubt the 2.4 will produce a lot more power with a tune and has a lot of potential...question is, why didn't it come with more power and tuned better. This engine can probably push 300 without needing to swap any other parts out. At the end of the day, the aftermarket will make this car badass because it has a lot of potential. The issue and the hate is that subaru could have done so much more for the same price point.
