Super Mario RPG funny
The smrpg moment that made me realize how funny this game was: mario, unable to verbalize how he had recently run into bowser, just transforms into bowser, scaring the absolute shit out of a room full of toads
Booster always struck me as like if Wario was a minor noble in the Russian Steppe
did you know there’s a guy named geno in this game?
Fr?
I always thought it was something smash fans made up no way 😦
Stop lying, why would you lie like that?
I throught his name was piccolo
@@misterboxhead3045I thought his name was overrated Mario rpg game character #3754.
Don't let the comedy distract you from the fact that Bruce Lee canonically existed in the Mario universe.
I think about this a lot
He’s also in dragon ball sooo 👀
I really can't think of any other game on the console that used physical comedy this well in its overworld sprites. Great video as always. I wanna replay this game now
Superstar saga came real close with peagi
Mario and Luigi series comes close in terms of slapstick humor with a touch of toon physics.
Good video about a good game!
This dislodged a memory: SMRPG items like armor and whatever else each have a little description you can read. As I recall, sometimes they’re straightforward, “protects against X” and so forth. But those descriptions can be funny, too. There is an armor item called Work Pants and its description is just “Sweaty work pants!” My brother and I would joyfully shout that to each other. Poetry.
12:40 I can't speak for Square artists in the 90s, but I can speak as a sprite artist who just recently released an RPG he was working on (Vinemon: Sauce Edition) which also contains a bunch of slapstick and expressive characters.
The way I did it is that whenever I was working on a cutscene or interaction and I got the idea for a funny animation, I would just pause what I was working on and just make that animation. And then put it in the game.
And if I was able to use it again later, that was a welcome bonus.
Sometimes I would even change the level layout to make the animation look better.
Granted, this is a time consuming process, since a lot of animations were only ever used once, for one character, but I think it's worth it if it makes the experience and the characters more memorable.
I also had to work around the game's limitations, since the overworld characters (at least the humans) have very small and minimalistic faces. Just two pixels per eye and no mouth.
So unless I was drawing them with cartoonishly big eyes, I had to let body posture do most of the work.
But it was a lot of fun to do! Making a game that's like a playable cartoon and seeing it slowly come to life is very rewarding.
I’ve never even heard of this channel before but the Geno7 Fun Club jingle was so charming that I had to join it.
Same here. haha
You brought tears to my eyes with the intro dude. I'm 32 years old and this game was really important to me as a kid. It was revolutionary in the way it brought some important characters to a new world and granted them aspects no other game in the series had before. It kindled my love for RPGs as a kid, and had me CRAVING more. I'm so, so happy the remake is happening and I hope you are just as excited. Thanks for this video bud. Subscribed, and know that you've got a friend for life in me.
Man.. the Twin Peaks and Rumiko Takahashi shoutouts :') It always takes me off guard when a creator references very particular things I'm a fan of, let alone in such quick succession lol
The cover of the geno's forest newgrounds song had me FLIPPING OUT, AMAZING! Great video!
It really is impressive how the Super Mario RPG managed to embody the charm and humor of the Mario series in both dialogue and slapstick. Everybody, from Mario, to Bowser, to Peach have witty dialogue(well, not in Mario’s case) or get knocked around in a cutscene to hilarious effect. And they all have their own quirks and traits that make them fun characters in general.
This is the video that I’ve found your channel out of, but your style is great. Subscription added.
I was always shocked about the fact that they were just able to make a funny silent protag using SNES overworld sprites, the game has that soul thing we are all looking for, fingers crossed for the remake
10:40
Man that comparison is SPOT ON, I love the ear for detail people can have when finding similar music!
Dude, I remember listening to the midi recreations of Super Mario RPG's OST before ever actually playing the game, too! I listened to a lot of midi recreations of video game OSTs back in the day before they were actually available.
As for the game itself, the game IS very funny, and honestly I think Super Mario RPG is a big reason why other Mario RPGs tend to be very comedic in tone. This is helped by Mario, being the silent protagonist, deciding to mime out what he's trying to say instead of NPCs just intuitively interpreting what he's getting at, along with a lot of self-awareness for the Mario formula at that point in time, and of course, all the funny dialogue in the game. Of course, that does make me wonder, will the remake preserve a lot of Ted Woolsey's translations? We already know Princess Toadstool is just going to be called Peach this time around, not to mention there were a lot of translation errors Woolsey made (for example, the "NokNok Shell", for example, is supposed to be the "NokoNoko Shell", "NokoNoko" being Koopa Troopa's Japanese name), plus there are nonsensical things like Mallow referencing Bruce Lee at one point. However, all of these weird moments help add to the game's overall charm, so it would be a shame to see some of it go, even if it's more accurate and consistent with the Mario world as we know it today.
I think by the time they were making SMRPG, Square had some kind of in house tool for scripting cutscenes using precanned animations with overworld sprites for their SNES games. It's a ton of work to make and test cutscenes of any complexity without using something like that.
Just wanted to say, you're one of my favorite "has a handful of videos on their channel, but every one of them is entertaining and accessible" content creators I've seen recently. Keep up the good work, and don't be afraid to take time off or try something new to avoid burnout! You stay shiny.
New sub, it's always nice to find another smrpg enjoyer. I can just picture us listening to the music imagining all the impossible scenarios, to be young again...
Great vid! and your cover of Rawest Forest at the end was the cherry on top, love it
Whenever characters are downed they remind me of Family Guy with their downed poses 😂
Also the plot is literally how Mario saved Christmas (smithy is just evil Santa) it’s awesome
... OMG!
lol I've heard the jokes, but now that I think about it...has a factory that makes weapons instead of toys, invades a home (Bowser's Keep) to take it rather than sneak in to give, seeks to end wishes (gifts) rather than trying to fulfil them.
1:58-2:04 Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light says hi
the amount of people currently playing through SMRPG right now is warming my old jaded gamer heart. Woolsey is a effin god and Booster is Elon Musk.
AHAHaa he really is
Do you still remember your idea for a sequel? Or have the stop motion or comic? I would love so much to see that stuff
I've always hated the silent protagonist trope but the stuff that you said in the last section of this video brought me to a really important realization. Many games these days make the silent protagonist but they don't make the character do anything else because they think that they can't, or they think that the character is supposed to have no emotions because you are to self-insert into it. Here in Super Mario RPG, the protagonist, while silent, is still highly expressive with all the funny animations. And obviously, it is not a generic MC, its Mario, so it has to be expressive, but still. What we are getting out of it isn't boring.
It makes you wonder why haven't more games done this approach. Modern games will often have their main character stand still, offer you one or two dialogue options, the character won't even move or open their mouth after selecting those options and the scene will carry on. Something went wrong. I hate how this many companies think that people want to self-insert on the main character.
New geno7 upload I'm so happy
I never played the original, so I admittedly don't have *too* much of a horse in this race, but my biggest gripe with modern Mario games is how sterile the UI feels nowadays, they very much have a feel of being... too clean, y'know?
Buuuut I know they're bringing on Yoko Shimomura for the remake, and if they keep (or at least match) the comedy of the original, I can see this being a much loved remake, and hopefully an sign that we want more wacky humour in Modern Mario.
Anyhow, loved the video! ^^
THE COVER OF RAWEST FOREST AT THE ENDDDDD
funny thing about that technically the subtitle was added to the release outside of japan where the game was just called Super Mario RPG seems this remake is using the JPN title this time around considering that the box art recreates the Japanese box art this time seems to prove this theory
Can't wait to follow these patterns!
Btw after school carisma is on Internet archive
7:30 This clip is doing double duty. As you explain, it's some fantastic meta/physical/metaphysical comedy with the party members. But it's also a scene where Mario needs to be PHYSICALLY RESTRAINED FROM PUNCHING A CHILD because he finally snapped after one too many insults.
It's such a great way of portraying this Mario as Kind Of Done With All This Shit, which feels both accurate to his character and almost certainly going to be cut from the remake.
12:58 Is this a Kyle Bosman Delayed Input reference specifically
OH! The Geno amiibo!!
Mario RPG and Pokemon taught me how to read
Barry, Twin Peaks & Super Mario RPG all in one video
DAMN good job!!!
This video kinda helps define why I keep watching the 3 hour super Mario rpg 100% tas.
Also Christopher Noisi fans rise up
Damn you're a great CZcamsr. Mark my words; one of your next 5 vids will blow up in popularity. Keep it up.
Rawest Forest Maze song?
Based.
Look up ":Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night Come to the Neon Cabaret". It's a Filmation movie from the early 90s about Pinocchio and this is the scene where he goes to the equivalent of pleasure island. This theme that plays, has a lot of sound beats that mirror Booster's theme.
I do not want voice acting. I wouldn't mind a few touchups in the translation, but mostly in stuff like enemy names, items, and such. Stuff where they actually got it wrong, not the humor that Woolsey added. (Except B'Tub ring, since no one gets that joke.) The Dialog has no real reason to change at all--except maybe adding back some of the 2D references with Culex if they actutally keep him 2D. (Or maybe change the dialog if they have this be his return after he masters the concept of 3D.)
I'd also love if they'd replace KerokeroCola with Croak-a-cola, which makes the joke even better. (Kerokero is the sound frogs make.) But I doubt they'd do it.
8:51 I fucking choked
SMRPG Legacy…. now THAT is a name I haven’t heard in a long time…..
Nice to be reminded of the olden days when I would browse the TMK website for hours, even try to find that "secret page" (which eventually I did, thanks to those hints the admins gave on the forum). 🙂
8:32 Thanks for mentioning this series, The history of this series has been very interesting as it was one of the reasons why the artist did the pen name for it the americans working with him at the time despised the way he drew the eyes in the series and how weird it was the point where he drew Mario realistically actually had some problems with Nintendo Power chiefs and what not crazy this was mentioned in the japanese book releases but not the american one i think, I have been actively researching Charlie Nozawa (Tamakichi Sakura) and his art in general he is actually pretty known in japan as an artist and helped the birth of Comic Boom and was known from Famitsu he did some more then just Mario and i have noticed the exact same wild humor of this Mario series is also in Mandama Diary stars himself as a pointy yellow guy,
I hope can inform more western people that he wasn't doing so well back in 2021 or 2022 i really he is doing well he just turned 60 this year!
I feel like disgaea took its style and comedy from supermariorpg cause its so similar
Everybody is getting hype for the Forest Maze remake, I am hype for Booster Tower potentially being remade into the stankiest funk track ever created
Hey hey heeeeey, a new Geno7 upload! What a way to start the day!
Great work on this, too--I'll admit I've never given Super Mario RPG a proper chance, but the news of the remake has definitely gotten me in the mood to give it another shot. I figure younger me was just an impatient brat who couldn't appreciate the game for what it was, especially the physical comedy making the most of the sprite limitations.
SM-RPG is exactly why I sought out and bought the snes-mini when it came out. Pre-loaded with a timeless classic, so great to hear it's getting the remake treatment if only for more eyes on the gem.
SMRPG is hands down my favorite game. Thank you so much for encapsulating the feelings I have for it, but couldn’t find the words to describe. It really IS a funny game, and it was an extra layer that I haven’t seen done the same since. I have recommended this game to countless people. Now when I do, I’ll include the link to this video. Thank you so much.
Ps. I also have the attention span of a rat, yet enjoyed every second of this video. Liked, commented and subbed!
I loved this game as a kid! when I was 8 or so my cousin had it and it blew my mind, I already had a 64 by then but this game was just so good we would play it and the music was so good! I almost finish the game a few times and lost my save.... so I will finally finish the game in the remake lol, but yes you are a bigger fan but I love the game too and I also am happy to be alive to be here when it comes out! both this and and tears of the kingdom is enough for me to play for a long time!, specially Totk
Wow, I never thought I'd ever hear someone else mention the Super Mario RPG Legacy forums. That's a relic from a bygone age if there ever was one.
I subbed and then immediately this man posted this video and now I am indebted to him for life
thank you so much for including the bowser feet licking scene
This game is probably the funniest Mario game. It doesn't take itself seriously. Even the main villain is shown to have comedic moments when you finally get to him being revealed to be a boiler with anger issues that wears a fake beard making him look like Santa? At face value you'd probably be asking me if I was high but no. That's actually in the game.
Boosters character makes the most sense. Bowser who has been emasculated and dethroned as the #1 bad guy in the Mario world now has to adventure to get his status back. Bowsers motivation confirmed. On that adventure you meet other Mario world villains who were not #1 during bowsers reign. This includes Punchenello who is not affiliated with the smithy gang, The Shark Captain Jonathan Jones. And Booster who as you said comes from a long line of affluent boosters. You can see the 7 or so boosters paintings on the wall in the tower, and their images tell a story of a linage of nobility, then you look at booster with the unhinged shave and hair cut and it express comical juxtaposition. The joke being that Because booster is a child of privilege or rather a Mario world Villain of privilege, Peach Lands directly into HIS tower with NO effort to be a villain on his part what so ever. Smearing everything bowser's worked for harder in his face. I was maybe 13 when I realized this was happening in the plot. And loved it. Yes. Mario RPG is a Screwball comedy.
They are making a remake? No wonder mario rpg has been all over my feed.
Just found you. I decided to subscribe after hearing your intro music.
Exiting the forest is super simple, all you do is follow these path turns
*FOR THE REST OF YOUR GAMING LIFE*
do you know how it feels as a Super Mario-kun fan to recieve a mere feather of SMK acknowledgement, *immediately* followed by the provider unmasking themself as a SMAdventures-head and loudly Adventurin' all over the place
It was a pleasant and incredibly fun experiencing this game for the first time for real!
Wtf is that intro song/pitch?! Lmao 😂
Subscribed.
Dig the Forest Maze cover bruv, crackin
First of all, how dare you.
Secondly, I completely agree.
Thank God lol. Finally someone else that sees the similarity of Booster's theme and the song played in Pulp Fiction.
I remember seeing this talked about a little bit on UseNet and old forums back in the day and kind of wishing it had received a PAL release (even though I didn't even own a SNES, lol). I actually still haven't properly gotten around to it, but I might bump it up the list after this!
The amount of random things included in this game surprised me enough already, but then I remembered this is a turn-based RPG. They really knew what they were doing when it comes to comedy.
Some things just leave me thinking, even to this day. Certainly they didn't need to add that *angry* Mario sprite that is only used like twice in the whole game, but they did. That's some true dedication.
Once you get to know that a big part of the game's humor was influenced by anime and manga, things start making a lot more sense. Could this game be better received nowadays? Though it would have to be localized again to keep the references, but it could be worth it. Japanese players may have got the jokes right away, but for US players, this game was way ahead of its time. People just weren't exposed to that media as much as today.
I wished Mario and friends flipped upside down with a silly sound effect when someone said something silly
Actually watching your videos after watching the gollum stream i got jumpscared by 3:30
you've kept the same username since you were SEVEN? nice. the net wasn't a thing when i was 7, but i've used mine since about 95. now, does that mean we're based and had a lock on our identities pretty much from the start, or does it mean we just never grew up?
I would probably say the best part of Mario RPG was that the main bad guys are essentially invading from a different game.
Lore of Super Mario RPG Is A Screwball Comedy momentum 100
Booster is my favorite.
A lot of the problem with this games is the rights to characters being messy with most of the original characters being owned by squaresoft and later Square Enix. The only Mario games that Square Enix worked on since are Mario Basketball on the DS and Mario Sports mix on the Wii. Usually when Nintendo and Square Enix collaborate it is pretty much Nintendo Publishing a Square Enix title in the west rather than working on a Nintendo property.
I take it you've played Super Mario RPG Armageddon?
Love that Spritz Bomb. :)
this video better have rawest forest fan animations mentioned
Nabiki Tendo! My favorite anime and favorite game in the same video!
bruh this channel introduced me to lute and lute just uploaded a couple hours ago r u the same guys
Yeah good essay here I like the part in the game where they told jokes and were goofy about things
What even is that intro music lol
Glad to know I'm not the only person that has referenced that one Dancing Mad comment by @hatsunemikusleftnostril (man, what a username...)
This game set the stage for comedy being a core part of the Mario RPGs
Also there technically is a Super Mario RPG 2 as that was the original name for the game that would become Paper Mario.
I personally really enjoyed super mario RPG and it is probably one of the best mario games
It's scary to think they could change the dialogue but certain parts wouldn't fit in with today's world so I guess things like Gameboy won't be appealing to newer audiences. ..then there's certain words and phrases that might trigger the newer generation. Just in the first 45 minutes in this game you get to find out if you like the game or not. I really hope people give this a shot
I will scream if you make another video about what video game music sounds like (is Earthbound next please)
I loved Mario RPG. I wished it were as least as long and spiffy as FFVI.
Thankee for your comedy reminder of this game.
I heard this game has Mario in it, wow
I'm watching from the future, but not very far so I don't know either.
SQUARE GAMES WERE GODLIKE. EINHANDER STILL NEEDS A SEQUEL AND REMAKE. SQUARE KNOWS HOW TO MAKE MASTERPIECES UNDERRATED DEVELOPERS.
geno7??? more like gAWESOME7 heehaw
dya get it?
That game had me laughing so hard
NEW GENO7 VID BABYYYYYY
where can I find the ending song. Also, a good video as always. I say we BOIL IT!
Japanese virgin did not have the legendary of the seven Stars in the title
Looks like they're doing a true shot for shot remake....which I find unfortunate. I really wanted a true shot for shot remake for FF7 because it was such a great game, but the graphics make it too hard to play, and it needed some QOL fixes.
But Mario RPG is.....almost perfect. Sure the graphics are a little outdated, but I probably won't spend $60 on a remake when what we should really get is a sequel....oh well, cest la vie.
I liked when Bowser got his feet licked.
You WHAT
voice acting mostly ruined video games - finally someone comments on it. good discussion
Glad to see that nun-chuks are a presence in this video
Screwball comedies are wonderful and its nice to see their name dropped once and a while. I grew up on a lot of them since my parents were pretty old and probably had pretty old fashioned taste in movies even for their time. We watched shit like VHS tapes of Laurel and Hardy and movies like Arsenic and Old Lace (which i actually got to see in a theater yesterday). Super Mario RPG has been on my list for a while to try out and idk maybe i will now! also thank you berry much for the buster keaton name drop :)
What's the cover at the end
"Rawest Forest" by Christopher Niosi, aka Kirbopher. Dates back to 2007. Personally though I prefer the sort of remake he did in 2011 titled "Waltz of the Forest."
such a good video!!!!
