    John Kent has a knack for chironomid fly patterns that catch big trout in still waters. While I was researching the fly pattern, I found the John ties this in a couple of different ways. He has a version with a white bead (no breathers) and a copper bead version (with breathers). He also ties the body in either tinsel wrapped first with the wire ribbing counter wrapped, or a stretch micro tubing ribbing wrapped first and the tinsel wound in between the ribs. All of these versions will work great and offer different amounts of the reflective surface.
    One other thing I should note is John's use of stretch floss as an underbody on the chironomid. It helps keep the body smooth and fills it out much quicker than using 70d thread to build the taper. John likes the Mirage Opal tinsel for the fly and it really glows with just a little bit of light, mimicking the trapped gas observed in accending midge pupae.

    Hi I have been fishing all of my life, when I was a kid we would take line hooks and a few worms head for the creek cut a stick along the way for a pole. I'm going to be 70 in a month or and I still enjoy it. I don't know why but I just never got into tying until recently. Thank you for your excellent video will be joining you again soon.

      @Hank Vana2 I hope that you get your wish. I really like this style of chironomid, it really lights up with just a little bit of light. I'll see about getting the other version posted up as well. Cheers

    Chimo! Very cool pattern. If you tie a a feather wing or bucktail streamer that would be great. TNFF has posted another one with Phil R. recently. I haven't watched yet, I think it"s on nymphing from that same older Erie trib steelhead video I told you about. Cheers!

    • @PiscatorFlies
      @PiscatorFlies  Před 4 lety +1

      Chimo Joe, I was thinking about a streamer for the next one. I might have to go look back in the catalogue to find something interesting. Will keep an eye out for TNFF vid. By the way, have you checked out Sport fishing on the Fly? Crew out of BC, they are also loading up their library on CZcams. Cheers

      @@PiscatorFlies thanks. I like the music on the promo. Watched a "big head black streamer" pike fly. Monster hair and spun deer hair mud head on a 5/0 octopus, plus the thread, all black. Real KISS pattern.

    What other colors would you recommend? Nice fly and video.

    • @PiscatorFlies
      @PiscatorFlies  Před 4 lety

      @Scott Lowe, kinda trick to go off script with the colors on this chironomid without changing the pattern, but John has a series of chironomids with the mirage opal on them. Check out John's Elvis chironomid as well, more or less the same with different colors. czcams.com/video/4Cmcf0uPwd4/video.html Cheers
