This song was written because his mother disowned him. She wanted to benefit from his talent & wanted him to sing only his fathers songs. Hank Jr rebelled, like a true Southerner, & went his own direction with his music! Check out his song "Hog Wild" & "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight". You'll love them.

Hank Sr. was a hard living, hard partying incredibly talented man. Look at the legacy he left and he died at age 29.
Hank Jr. was basically put on the road at the age of 9 to perform his daddy’s songs. He struggled living in his father’s shadow. He drank, he did drugs, he partied and attempted to self delete.
He fell off a mountain in the middle of nowhere and crushed his skull. His brain and one of his eyeballs were out of his head. It took 6 hours to rescue him and 5 surgeons working for over 7 hours to even start to repair the damage.
When he woke up he didn’t even know if he would ever talk again much less perform. He was in recovery and therapy for two and a half years after that.
But in his prescription pain pill “haze” he found his unique voice and wrote a lot of songs. He embraced his outlaw Country image and hasn’t looked back.
He’s a legend in his own right and I’m sure his daddy would have been very proud that his son came out of his shadow and into his own.
So if he gets drunk and sings all night long it really is a family tradition. Like father like son.

I'm an old hillbilly. I am so happy to see you listening to this music and ENJOYING IT. Just goes to show we all have more in common than what divides us. It's time to tell the politicians that are trying to tear us apart to jump in a lake, and realize we are all THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

I'm a Canadian and people where I'm from LOVE hank. People rep the confederate flag and everything. Country is even more than country wide. It's worldwide.
He fell off a mountain in 1973. That is the reference in this song. His face was crushed and required extensive reconstruction. He wears the beard and glasses to cover the scares from the accident. Hank Sr died from a drug overdose (pain killers) in the back seat of his Cadillac on his way to play in a new years concert. Hank Jr was big into drugs and alcohol and when he was trying to clean up a little and going through a lot he fell over 500ft down a mountain and almost died.
When he was a young artist he covered a lot of his dad’s songs. He eventually wanted to go his own way, when he fell off Ajax mountain in Montana and almost died when he woke in the hospital Johnny and June Cash were at his bedside. Once he recovered he started doing his own thing and jumped headfirst into the outlaw country genre. He has a lot of great songs. The thing about it is he has lived most of his songs. It is definitely a rabbit hole for you to dive into my personal favorites are: OD’d in Denver, All in Alabama, Bluesman, whiskey bent and hell bound and the list goes on and on. He is definitely a country gangster.

Fun fact. After his dad died, his mother started teaching him to sing exactly like his father. Using his father's vocal inflections and mannerisms. At age 8, his mother put him up on stage in front of his father's backing band.

As a teen it was all country, rock, classic rock, oldies and metal. Shipped out to the army at 18 which is a true mixing pot and it really opened my mind to everything, I am 44 now and recently retired from the army and when people come to our house asking “who’s damn playlist is this going from Iron Maiden to Marty Robbins to Tech9 and NF 😂 it’s mine bitch, whatever is relatable or gets me in the zone😂❤
Yes, Hank Jr was part of the outlaw movement. You nailed the Parallel between Country and Hip Hop. It is about lifestyles and middle finger to the man music. They are both music of the working man.
Funny story: my daughter didn't have many interactions with her Dad, as he would often "forget" (i.e. be too messed up to remember to pick her up on the weekends)…..(I'd tell her he had to work)….but when she finally was an adult and wanted to get to know him, she and I and some friends went to a Karaoke Bar and she heard this song. She was like: "They wrote a song about my Daddy!!"....because by then, many of her other family members had been... well, most went to prison at least once. All but my daughter. She was serving on the city counsel, while raising three very smart children, one with special physical needs.
He never got a chance to sing with his dad so he took 1 of his dads songs "theirs a tear in my beer" and sang we ith him

Loved watching you listen to this 😁 my daddy loved Hank Williams Sr. and he sang his songs to me and played his records all the time! He was from Alabama like us so that made him even more special. He died when he was young (around 30) from years of alcohol and drug abuse which led to heart failure. This is why Hank Jr. says he was carrying on the family tradition. BTW that was Charlie Daniels playing the fiddle on this song 🤗❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻

“A Country Boy Can Survive” is a masterpiece.
In the sixties and seventies, Hank Williams was still the biggest country star of all time. Like the Elvis of country. Hank Jr really was in a "unique position " as the song says. Imagine the impossible pressure to live up to the best ever. He couldn't, and that's what really drove him to the vices that nearly killed him. When he finally found his own path, he found his own voice and success. And his own legend alongside his dad.
And to start out doing it at 8 years old just 🤯

His father died in he back seat of a car while being driven to a gig. This happened when Hank Jr. Was very young. I saw Hank live in 2007ish with Skynyrd, and nobody knew Kid Rock was there with him that night, so when Kid Rock came out and sang it with him everybody was super surprised and went crazy! It was awesome!

Second, I love your reaction to this song. My dad was a big fan of Hank, Sr. (I had one of his songs played at Dad's Celebration of Life service) and I am, too. When Hank, Jr. became popular with his Outlaw Country, I didn't care for it, but life and some of the struggles that came with the years have made me appreciate his music.
I do hope you will react to some Hank Williams, Sr. at some point. There is now a third and fourth generation singing.

We play this at every family get together we have, right along with Metallica, Queen, Chubby Checker & The Fat Boys and now...Ren. (Plus many more in all genres). There isn't one person, from age 80 to 5 who isn't belting it out. It's a staple in country music. He's truly Outlaw Country and a huge influence on today's Outlaw Country artists. FYI, Hank Jr. has a beard and always wears sunglasses and a cowboy hat to hide the damage that was done to his head and face when he fell off the side of mountain in 1975. He wrote A County Boy Can Survive years after the accident, and even though that song is about the over-urbanization of society, I think it also speaks to the strength and perseverance he had to survive the accident. The man is a living legend.

@@garygoodman4342 yes the suicide attempt was frog overdose and yes he’s just short of 70 years of playing on stage it wasn’t meant to be an exact number just a rough estimate. So I was off by 2 years from when he had his fall. The fact is that he has been playing for longer then most and I can’t recall the exact number it’s been many years ago but he had a crazy number of chart toppers on the billboards top 100 at the same time that just can’t be matched. Yes times are different now and I’m an old man so I don’t keep up with the new music and numbers, so maybe I am wrong but he was at the top of the charts for his time and no one would have thought he could be outdone.
@agordon7369 music numbers these days are pointless. It's all digital and record companies pay to have their artists streamed 24/7, so their songs go #1 overnight. Hank Jr's 1st show was in 1957 in Swainsboro, GA, 1st album and single in 1964, in 1983 at one point he had 9 of the top 50 country charts on billboard at the same time, he had 11 number 1 singles in the 80s and has 7th most charted songs of any artist in the history of country music.

You know, all my life I've bought, recorded, or downloaded the music I liked. Although it contained examples of many genres, it was still just what I liked, and what I played. But, it was as much of living in a bubble, as those who limited their own musical exposure to one genre. That's why I love watching your "reaction videos". Your shows take advantage of the musical hive-mind to introduce new exposure to old classics. Music is so magical because it brings us all together. I don’t care if it is some classical Holst the Planets, some genius singer songwriters telling us a human experience about fast cars or sinking ships, traditional drumming, wailing bagpipes, or a fun rapper producer in Colorado spitting bars in the car with his daughter, it all is part of life. In the end we learn from the music of a people but rhythm, flow, and music relates to ALL people. Corvids can make and use tools, ants communicate, but unique among the creatures of this earth only humans make art for the sake of art. Music is a universal human form of art that reflects how we relate to the universe. It is a fundamental part of being human. As a person I find music gives me an opportunity to connect with others and learn that deep down we are not that different.
