    Performance Notes
    It started as “The Pump Song” on Mickey Hart’s first solo album (1972’s “Rolling Thunder”), because its rhythm track was based (in an ingenious bit of what might be called proto-sampling) on the sound of a water pump on Mickey’s ranch. But once Bob Weir added some changes to the groove Mickey had found and lyricist Robert Hunter contributed a cinematic storyline that was part cowboy movie/part sci-fi/part biblical epic, it became something else again, and a highlight of many a show by the Grateful Dead and its musical successors. This version features a nice, lengthy jam leading up to the song and some fiery soloing by John Mayer and Jeff Chimenti. - Gary Lambert

    Dead & Company was formed in 2015 when the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir joined forces with artist and musician John Mayer, Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge, and Fare Thee Well and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. The result was one of the most successful touring bands of the decade. The inaugural tour kicked off in the fall of 2015 with two sold-out shows at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City and ended with two sold-out performances at the ‘Fabulous’ Forum in Inglewood, California.
    Since then, the band has completed five tours, playing to more than 1.5 million fans, and has become a record-breaking stadium act. Dead & Company has headlined iconic stadiums across the country including Folsom Field, Autzen Stadium, Citi Field, Fenway Park and Dodger Stadium. Additionally, the band broke Wrigley Field’s all-time concert attendance record in 2017. Dead & Company’s 2018 Summer Tour ranked in the top 25 of the Top 100 Worldwide Tours and for the past two years, their Summer Tours ranked in the top 15 of the Top Global Concert Tours.

    It's amazing how the drummers Bill and Mickeyt along with phil and Bob lay down such a phenomenal rhythm section for the vocalist or lead soloist be it John or Jerry RIP. It really captures the Dead sound. Keep it up Boys.

      From a drummer it’s horrible! The dude with the big toy looking red tree trunks is totally off with the drummer at times! They hold it together but one is out of the pocket and the other in!

      I was familiar with Johns music. When I heard that the guys were gonna play with Mayer, I knew they were going to kill it. I've been a GD fan since 82 at 12 years old. My first show was in 86. I can't understand some of the hate I see about John. He is a phenomenal musician. People say well he just isnt Jerry. No, but he is a highly competent musician who loves and understands music. I know Jerry is up there smiling from ear to ear. We need to be Grateful that the music is still being played.

      @@dannyteague5741Never understood the hate for Mayer. I thought it was a strange choice at first but he embraced the music and his place in it and stepped up. He got it. If you loved the music I didnt understand why you wouldnt love this band. I caught many fine shows by DeadCo and imho was the best post Jerry incarnation. It was a phenomenal 8 yr run. I'm sad it's over but grateful we had it.

    Seeing how JM took his chance, hearing talk about his experience with the dead has totally changed my view of him as a player and a man!! Always been in love with this band but even more so. Jerry is looking down with a huge smile on his face. This band is a phenomenon of nature, growing all the time. In 50years there will still be music being made from the garden of Eden that is the Grateful Dead and I for one am grateful to have been alive to see them, and got to see Jerry play in the UK the last time he toured here.👍🎵🎶🇬🇧🇺🇸

      As a guitar player, and a real true love of playing the guitar, there's no better band to get in with in terms of exploring your instrument endlessly. Or at least, until it ends. He had 8yrs to fully explore the guitar in a way he didn't ever have with his own groups and stuff he played outside of grateful dead music.

      Agree. Jeff's B3 playing ain't nearly on the level that Brent was but his piano playing is steller. He was really the glue that kept it together for DeadCo. I also love Rob Barraco from Darkstar who's played with the boys a lot over the years. I was actually hoping he would step into the keys seat for DeadCo. But Jeff was great. Both great musicians.

    the double edged sword of time and tempo - quicker than this and mayer/chimenti would have to be blazing fast to stick with double time solos, but at this speed it the solos sound great but the verses sound like theyre walking through molasses

    Oy... Mayer has incredible skills but the idea of 'look at me' seems to creep into every. moment. of. his. playing. Garcia transmitted that western pathos/americana/blues in an incredibly creative unique way. Mayer is just accurate/generic with way too much embellishment. I want to like his input.... but I keep hearing him show off.

      I hear you. I’ve really enjoyed Mayer. I really try not to connect the Grateful Dead with Dead and Co. I mean as a band. The reason Dead and Company works is because the band lets Mayer be Mayer. Just like they let Jerry be Jerry. But you certainly make great points.

    • @someotherdude
      @someotherdude Před 5 lety

      The ultimate irony of my disappointment of John Mayer: I work at the high school he attended (in Fairfield, CT) I know a handful of people who know him. I want to like him. I really do. Again, anyone can see he is ridiculously talented. But he hijacks every song to scream 'LOOK AT ME' !!!! Instead of playing with restraint, letting a certain sloppiness communicate some forlorn western creature of the desert.... And don't even get me started on Phish.

    • @someotherdude
      @someotherdude Před 5 lety +1

      Hey, great comment, some other dude. Wait, that was my comment. Anyway, in 2013 I went to the 'Gathering Of The Vibes' fest in Bridgeport, CT.
      'Phil Lesh And Friends' played - oh my gawd it was so gawddamn good. Still had impromptu jams that were just exquisite. I stood there in awe, it was SO GOOD. 2013 was the last year actual GD people played the 'Vibes'.

    • @someotherdude
      @someotherdude Před 5 lety

      @ LPS Abi:
      Yeah, that's what I need to do, stop expecting to hear Jerry. Mayer has his own great style, and I like this particular video clip. But could he just limit the moments where the focus is on him? I think even Jimi Hendrix played along with the band, then stepped forward for a crescendo, then toned it down to let the band show through, repeat for each song.
