  • Montezuma Castle is a well-preserved ancient cliff dwelling located in Camp Verde, Arizona. It was constructed by the Sinagua people, a pre-Columbian culture that lived in the area from approximately 1100 to 1425 CE. Despite its name, it has no connection to the Aztec emperor Montezuma; early European settlers mistakenly attributed the site to him.
The structure is built into a limestone cliff, and it consists of 20 rooms spread over five stories. It is one of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in North America and offers a glimpse into the lives of the Sinagua people. Montezuma Castle was declared a U.S. National Monument in 1906 to protect and preserve the site. The monument includes a visitor center and museum, where artifacts and exhibits provide further insight into the history and culture of the Sinagua.
