Note : It's the clearest sounding source I have heard of this live version (there are at least 4 different audience recordings of this show). Sadly, I only have it as a poor quality lossy file. Apologies, but it's a case of making the best with what you have.
What was this supposed to be? That's the single most heinous cover version I've heard in my life. It even beats Brian Eno's take on Mother of Violence!
I wouldn't want to hear Eno's take of "Mother of Violence" if he ruined it, it's a very important track for me. As I was saying, the Pumpkins only played "Games Without Frontiers" a couple of times.Corgan was probably not convinced they pulled it off. I'm still glad they attempted it their way (well, the way they sounded on the 2000 tour which was a different sound from their previous tours) and I love both Peter Gabriel and The Smashing Pumpkins.
Pumpkins deliver a good and solid rock-sound on this one. It does not have to sound "MTV-friendly" - and it does not have to please all Gabriel-fans. Billy Corgan does his own interpretation and he is paying tribute. People should stop comparing covers - this is not like Celine Dion covering Jennifer Rush, respect the artist - in this case Corgan and the Pumpkins - i am huge Gabriel-fan, but i also have a couple of Pumpkins-albums. Thanks to Corgan, once more.
Damn billy with that wig
You must be a lover of style.
Wow way to bastardize a song
yep, i dunno even know what that was... maybe worst cover ive heard this.... year? i dont like exact cpver attempts, but that was just turrible
Shame...I expected something better!
I usually only listen if they make a $. I take exception.
Billy looks like Zoey Deschanel...
I had to google her name, I don't know her...
For the first time, I am disappointed with what I was expecting to hear for a song, especially being a cover...I mean what the hell is this ? It sounds like Pumpkins. But not the song it should be.
Awe man. I don’t recognize the song. Not that I don’t like thrash, but this is one of my favorite songs and it sure ain’t Peter Gabriel. The lyrics are definitely different. I am surprised Gabriel didn’t tell em to F off. Love 90s Grunge. This band had some awesome songs, but sorry this ain’t one of them!
So what? They only played it a couple of nights, so I guess Corgan didn't like that rendition too much either. They experimented with it and didn't keep it. I don't know if Peter was aware of that cover at all but he's quite a cool and open minded guy...I don't think it would have been a problem for him. And I think it's still better than their version of Talking Heads' "One in a Lifetime". That said, I love Peter's original, it's very poignant, and I love Peter overall. Big fan of his. Funnily enough, his third album seems to have inspired 90s alternative bands a lot, as Primus covered "Intruder" from it.
Um. This isn't thrash. Its alternative rock
I agree, but Pumpkins are alternative,
Not runge.
Grunge is underground, whereas alternative is a mix of various subgenres
Smashing Pumpkins is the best alternative band, and Alice In Chains is the best of the grunge bands ..
in my opinion .. :) haha
Definitely disliked
that's a dog turd of a cover . 😬
Billy probably didn't think much of it either, I think it was only played twice.
I new there was a reason I don't like Smashing Pumpkin s they suck
