1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 1:25 Scale AMT 1187 -Model Kit Build & Review. Build and photos by Daniel Gay for RoR. Instructions at the end. Copyright 2021 Right On Replicas, LLC. All rights reserved.
I find that the Molotow Chrome Pen works great for the window chrome, and other details too. Looks like real chrome, far better than paint. I need to add this Mustang kit to my stash!
Didn't know they made kits for this model and this year. My uncle has one, same year too, but yellow with black stripes so it looks like I know what I'm getting him for his birthday.
Nice kit and a very good build. Looks to me like AMT is having better luck with printed Whitehall tires than what I can remember in the 1960s when printed tires first came out. White walls printed on vinyl tires then were really off center and looked unrealistic. I turned the tires around and used the blackwell side. The tires in this kit look much more accurate .
Doug+ another great build I per-ordered round2 all new tooling of the. AMT international transtar 4070a COE this is an all new I've been waiting for this one a lot of truck modelers have been waiting it even has painting mask for the strips like to see you do a kit review on this old cornbinder this is going to be a part of my old school trucks in my collection once again great kit review and build
Great overall review! I have to point out that both engines are incorrect for this year if car. Many parts, namely the chassis and engines have been in use since MPC'S 1966 Mustang Fastback kit. So the block is more of a 289. The 351 Windsor is a punched out later variant and several details changed. The big block is actually a 428 CJ ( it is even engraved as a casting stamping in the block) but they give boss 429 heads... The body and interior look great but the engines are a cobbled up affair.
MAP, Yes, I didn't include them going for the sleek street sleeper look! Thanks for watching and please subscribe if you haven't already to help us reach more modelers! -Doug
Truly a superb job ! How the heck do you get your paint finishes so glossy ? For the most part,I try sticking with testors bottled paint cut with a 2:1 mix of lacquer thinner. My goal is to apply as many as 12 thin coats. I do this so when I use the sanding system kit,I don't rub through to the primer. However, I never use the sanding step and shoot testors clear ultra high gloss over the color. For awhile it looks great but the gloss kind of goes away. It still has a gloss finish, but nothing like your mustang. That 1 shot paint you used, is that a hobby paint, or can paint you get at pep boys, I never heard of it ?. Thanks ,Doug. And Yes,I am a subscriber of Right on Replica's
HH, Daniel says, "I get my 1 shot from a local art supply store. 1 shot can be bought from several on line suppliers, some automotive paint supply stores and sign supply stores, not too many of those around anymore. The shine on this model is straight from the airbrush. 1 shot takes a long time to cure to be able to rub it out. 1 shot will react to top coating with some clears, but I have used model masters high gloss clear in the past if the paint does not come out as shiny as I would have liked." Hey Doug,I have a question for you.It has nothing to do with this particular build, but its your most recent and you might read my comment. I think if I'm not mistaken you said you once worked for AMT/Ertl ? If so, maybe you can kind of answer my question. Its kind of loopy but bare with me. We ALL love building car models for sure and we get exited when there is a completely new releases from any of the car model manufacturers. Johan put out some truly unique kits in the day, as you know. Supposedly, no one knows what happened to the dies/ molds .With the technology we have today, why couldn't AMT,REVELL, or Other get ahold of some completely unbuilt Johan kits, 3D Scan them ,and remake new dies with some improvements and get them back on the shelves ? I would think it would be more economical for a manufacturer to work with an a established kit, scan all the individual parts, then start from scratch we're I guess they would have to hunt down a REAL car and scan that.I have 8 unbuilt Johan kits sitting here in my man cave/model building room that would gladly donate to these companies to reverse engineer like a Roswell ufo ! Lol . So,what do you think ? Does it sound doable ,or theres no way a kit manufacturer would be interested ? Hey, ask Newt for his insider opinion on this ? Thanks for reading my comments. It was long, and won't make it a habit. Your busy too . Thanks ,Howard H.
HH, That's actually a great question. Why couldn't they scan old classics and recreate them? The short answer is - it still costs too much to produce the molds and create all the other material for a kit to be very profitable unless they sell a whole lot of them. Sadly, the mass market isn't there anymore to support the investment. -Doug
HH, Absolutely but they do marketing research that give those rare new tools a good probability of sales success. There's also double royalties to not only the current holder of JoHan's ownership but also to the car and tire manufacturers.
SB, That review was a couple years ago and I think I just lost the driver's side mirror somehow. It does look more sleek that way though! Thanks for watching and please subscribe if you haven't already to help us reach more modelers! -Doug

Looks a nice kit, I like those factory hubcaps and white-line tyres.
Springer, Yeah, AMT Added some nice touches for this release! -Doug

I need to add this Mustang kit to my stash!
Lance, Thanks for the tip! -Doug
I find the Molotow doesn't stand up to handling
SF, That's true. It will rub off easily! -Doug

John, How fortuitous. Aren't you glad you stopped by! -Doug
Nice Mustang, good job trying to stick to the theme, modeles are often about the story. Great review, thanks.
TE, This kit's sold as a movie car so we tried to do that but it comes with a lot of other parts too. Thanks! -Doug

Pat, I have to agree. Much better now! -Doug

Not really a fan of these early 70s bigger Mustangs, but this came out looking nice. I particularly like the hubcaps.

@@RightOnReplicas aren't the model manufacturers still producing brand new kits vs retooling ?

I'd have to adjust the stance, I never liked how this generation Mustang sat lower in the back.
