About this video:
It’s Day 59 of New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year where we are challenging ourselves to do 365 Days: 365 Activities in New Zealand! Today we are exploring the city of Wanganui! What’s more all the things we are going to be doing are free (or very very cheap).
We take a look at the city centre architecture of Wanganui before hitting the Wanganui Museum. Next, it’s off to Durie Hill to take the historic Durie Hill Elevator which is down and awesome tunnel lined with Maori carvings.
After a bumpy ride up the Durie Hill Elevator, we arrive at the Durie Hill Water Tower which is free to climb up. We go up countless stairs of the Durie Hill Tower to get some awesome views of Wanganui City and the Whanganui River.
It’s back to our accommodation now, the 42b College House backpackers.
So what do you think of Wanganui? Is it a city you would like to visit in New Zealand?

The spelling of the name changed, but the pronunciation is the same. Local Maori have a regional accent where "wh" is pronounced "wa". That is why the town was originally written as Wanganui but should have actually been spelled Whanganui. Still spoken as Wanganui though. See, totally simple, don't know why anyone would be confused...
Cool video...that elevator was awesome 👏 with the tunnel
Nice video guys, thanks. It reminds me a lot the time when I was in Whanganui 7 years ago
The tower is not a water towre - that is further along the river (incidently you are seeing this because my internet comes via a microwave link fixed to the top of the water tower). The tower these two climbed is actually a memorial to soldiers killed in WW1 and was built only for that reason.
My uncle helped with the construction of the fountain in Victoria Avenue in 1993 😊 it’s a lovely little old town 😊😊😊
I'm from Wanganui and it's beautiful at night
I grew up in Whanganui:)
I love my city great video I got some cool videos too from Wangas too.
Botanical gardens is the BEST its full of plants flowers lake field BBQ tracks suuuper cool
That elevator is safe the cool thing is that it's over 100 years old the goal of the elevator is to keep everything as original as possible if you get the chance you should see the plant room and ride ontop the elevator it's an amazing experience!
Hey guys cool video, the tower you climbed isn't the water tower . You may have noticed a tower to your right. That's the water tower 😉 sadly that's restricted to the public though. Zzzz
