I can totally relate to this. I have a personal driver car service here in LA with clients that have millions. They're the ones that always want to low-ball my rates,complain about my prices and ask for a discount.
Maybe trade those discounts for some inside knowledge

There are only 450 nba players. Rich Paul and top tier agents can have that attitude but not every agent. In some instances, having an agent like Rich Paul can work against you because if you ain't davis or James status, you aren't a priority and they will push you on a less experienced agent that works for the agency
That was a good explanation on why athletes ask for a discount. So simple, yet I had never thought about it. They are used to getting stuff for free.
I had an interesting conversation with my 88 year old uncle. I was complaining about Obama care health insurance and how many services aren’t covered. I also complained about how could people vote or want such are horrible insurance. He simply replied “Because its free” when you haven’t had any better , that’s all you know.
That's a bad example Rich is using. An agents success is tied to a players success.There are only 450 basketball players in the nba and they generate millions of dollars. There aren't enough players to go around for all the agents to exist. Luckily, Rich started with the best basketball player of this generation as client so uber talent will flock to him but if I'm dropping millions of dollars there dhould be some flexibility

If you don’t have insurance you do. I’m a broke older college student and most doctors will negotiate. They over-inflate prices for insurance billing so I negotiate to prepay cash to the lowest amount they accept from insurance.

Price of everything, value of nothing. An agent benefits as the client does. Exceptions exist, but that's the general rule. A good agent might be a real difference maker for your kids and grandkids. The Range Rover won't even run right by the time you gift it to a relative.

not just athletes... I have sold Hermes + Prada and folks can't spend enough, fast enough. And I have also helped people heal chronic pain and trauma - then they want the hook up or think that a compliment about how talented I am is going to pay my expenses. The cost is the cost, keep the same energy for people as you do 'stuff'.

I don't know much about this space but since working with an agent is based on percentages and not a set dollar fee, anyone would have a right to negotiate the percentage fee down especially as a player value increases or decrease over time based on skill and age etc.... It's business and nothing personal. They can choose to spend there money with whomever, however they like.

Sorry. I am an Escrow Officer in LA.. folks are the same way. Buyers and Sellers ALWAYS want discounts and free escrow services, not realizing WE are the ones driving that bus! Never request discounts from the realtors or loan brokers whose fees are mostly twice or three times more than ours.

Honestly, I get both sides of this. Imagine going to your job. Putting in all the work. Then having to give someone else. A large portion of what you feel like is a large portion of your money. Agents do work but they aren't working like that so I can see the sentiment of these players. But I can also see the agent wanting to be paid well. They want a certain lifestyle as well.
