This is from Evening Primrose, written for TV by Stephen Sondheim. I have a copy of it on DVD. It's about someone who decides to escape life to live in a department store. Here we get a glimpse of what Perkins was like onstage - FAN-fucking-TASTIC! Though he doesn't have a big voice, he is so musical, knows his way around a song, comfortable singing and being "onstage", which is what he started/ended doing. Movies were almost peripheral. If people thought he was only Norman Bates, they didn't know him.
This is surely one of the most accurate stuff written about Tony Perkins! He was beyond brilliant. Incredibly talented with a certain vulnerability that made him so endearing. A gifted actor and singer for sure!
"I'm alone, it's done, they're gone, I'm a genius, Charles, you are an unadulterated genius, you are an indisputably extraordinary what was that?" Lol I love this
Tony Perkins recorded some songs in the late fifites and early sixties. He made a Loesser musical Greenwillow in 1960 whenhe was nominated for a Tony Award. It was a flop but showed Tony s talent as a singer; In 1963 he made an audition with Barbara Cook for She Loves me.Sher wanted him but Harold Prince cast Daniel massey for the role and tony went to make movies in France. He was in many Ben Bagley s Revisited Albums:Rodgers and Hart,Contemporary composers(Sondheim-Herman etc),Gershwin and others.he and Barbara Cook recorded three dues and a trio in the last one. He was a very talented singer but its better knpown for Psicho and other movies
Tony Perkins was as good a singer as he was as an actor. He was also in a Frtank Loesser musical Greenwillow when he was nominated for a Tony award abd also recorded many Lps and was part of the star cast of ther Ben Bagley revisited series. He could have been in two more musicals She Loves me when he made auditions with Barbara Cook and the great singer preferred him as Georg but Harold Prince chose Daniel Massey and Tony made a film with Brigitte Bardot in France instead and as Bobby inb Company after Evening Primrose bur he preferred tomake another Psicho movie and Dean Jones was cast. Imagine Perkins in both musicals.Maybe if he had made She loves me on stage we would hav ehad the movie with Perkins,Cook and Jack Cassidy, and also the Company movie.its a pity.
+Evilsylar101 Well I recommend you look for it. It's like an old Twilight Zone but set to music by Sondheim. It's a made for TV special called 'Evening Primrose'.
Is this a program that was broadcast in the sixties, but ABC lost the master color print and all we have left is b&w? Did the creators of this get the idea from this from _My Name is Barbra_?
Oh, just curious. It seems like tv and film companies in the sixties were careless with their archives, I was wondering if this was another horror story.

I've watched this movie before
Wow had no idea he'd done some musicals AND recorded 3 albums in his youth. What is this from?
Evening Primrose, music by Sondheim :D
Evilslar101: I'm wondering if you ever watched the tv movie this came from. It gets dark pretty quick.
Nope never even heard of the film or whoever this came from. I just thought it was a good tune.
