- Whenever there’s money to be made, especially with art, it’s inevitable that it will attract those hoping to grab a piece of that pie by reproducing it and attempting to sell it as the real thing. You see it with paintings, clothing, sneakers, and accessories. And yes - even with vinyl records. And it’s nothing new. The vinyl black market has been around for years. Almost as long as there has been a vinyl market.

Now they have available high resolution sound from internet plataform or a CD is enough to make millions of copy of vinyl .
Bootlegs are so prevalent today that the prices have cratered from so many computer copies. I long ago got everything I want, all for Pennies on the buck. And yes, the sound quality is largely GREAT.
Bootlegs have never been away. In the cd era they were all around. Now with the return of vinyl you can find so many live bootleg concert records. I recently bought a Nirvana bootleg, and although the sound was okay i have to admit i wasn’t as excited as i used to be back in the days. If you want decent sounding bootlegs it’s better to look for the original digital source online.
I do agree with you there. Back when they were exciting to buy (I mean way back in the 80s before the proliferation of digital) they were somewhat rare and also collector's items.
I'm not entirely sure, but I guess I have two Counterfeits of Kraftwerk LPs they are so well done that anyone could have been fooled.
They are getting really good at making almost perfect counterfeits these days,

I vacationed in Spain about 6 months ago, counterfeits were EVERYWHERE! I got taken for Megadeth Rust in Peace. I did intentionally buy a copy of Pantera- Projects in the jungle simply because they will never be repressed (according to Rex)
I completely get that. Especially if they'll never be reissued. I suspect a couple of my purchases over the last year are counterfeit.
Hey,I have a question,is waxtime, DOL,jazz images,not now music,vinyl passion, doxy,del ray,pan am records count as bootlegs,pirate,and counterfeits? Bc I've seen alternate artwork and I've seen discogs ban sales of some of those records I saw online,and I even saw a waxtime reissue of miles Davis kind of blue,and it was waxtime,and discogs banned it for sale bc it's a bootleg,pirate,counterfeit pressing,once again,are those companies I said are bootlegs,pirates,counterfeits? And can you do a video explaining that in detail bc i was reading an article and it doesnt work.
I can look into doing a video on that. What I do know is it's somewhat of a "gray " area - they actually refer to it as the "grey market". It's not black market illegal goods, they aren't counterfeit or bootlegs, it more has to do with EU copyright laws. Copyright law isn't my thing, but from what I understand, those labels are able to press records where the copyright expired in the EU (like in Span, where some of those labels operate). The reason they are banned in places like Discogs has to do with the fact that the copyright is still in effect in the US by whomever holds the copyright. At least that's my understanding.
I bought a Nirvana vinyl lot recently and the Nevermind vinyl was pink. I couldn't find much about it so went to discogs and it appears to be unofficial. This is kinda a bummer but the other 3 in the lot are legit and I only paid $50 total
Great price! And I had the same thing happen with a Nirvana album. I bought _In Utero_ on an online auction and it was on yellow vinyl - completely unofficial. I was bummed too.

It may sound fine. The one I bought sounded good, but it wasn't what I expected, so I tracked down an official copy. As far as selling it - I don't think it's illegal as long as you're upfront that it's "unofficial". @@show-me-retro
I have collected records from the 1950s and 60s most of my life, RnB, Rockabilly and such. A lot of these RARE records were couterfeited in the 1970s but nearly all of them had ISSUED IN and then the year in the dead wax . A lot of them gave better sound quality than the ORIGINAL pressings. If a REALLY RARE record is being sold at a ridiculously low price, then you can bet its a counterfeit. Not all of them are poor quality. If this is the only way you can get the music you love at a price you can afford then I can see nothing wrong.
