As a plant person: a lot of bulbed flowers like Tulips and Daffodils can grow with just water if the bulb is secure (like the vase) and if they roots have access to oxygen between waterings (the guy let the water get absorbed completely before adding more). Some bulbs might need fertilizer at some point but water is pretty much it!
