What to do if you wire a GM alternator and the engine won't shut off

  • I purchased a 1955 Chevy truck and the alternator was not wired. After wiring the alternator and starting the engine, the engine would not shut off. I found a fix on Chis Craft's channel and applied his fix to my truck. It works and it's simple.

    Yup. Ran into that before wiring a GM alt to an old military jeep. Never to old to learn. Glad you got it worked out.

    There you go Wyatt, nice work in just wiring a bulb in the excitation circuit for the alternator. Keep up the good work!

      It was lesson learned from another channel Chris Craft. Easy fix that had me going there for a while.

    Nice work! Reminds me of some of the "stuff" we had to do in the field to keep the missions going. Maintenance rules.

    Proof of concept. Ivan would be proud of you Wyatt! Nice job.

    Somebody has a label maker just like mine. Going to keep that little gem tucked away in the back of my mind where I can find it. Thanks, good one. doug

      The labels were there before I got into it. I have a label maker too and it does come in handy. Thanks again for watching.

    Oh God I hate wiring. One little mistake can mess everything up and take hours to days to find. Good luck buddy. -John

      Tell me about it. I spent three days working on wiring on this old truck and I'm worn out! I consider myself fairly intelligent but electronics intimate me.

  • @TheDisgruntledMechanic

    Yep thats what I thought you would have to do. Nice fix!

      Old school fix that I never hard of before. I'm learning all the time.

  • @PennsylvaniacookingBlogspot

    That's handy to know! Especially since I run older stuff, LOL, i can see this happening to me one day!

    Well that's different. I usually stuff potatoes in the tail pipe . That works too.

    Sometimes on theses older models we have to adapt and overcome ! :)

    The dash doesn't have a charging warning lamp? Perfect time to add a little red light! =)

      No it doesn't but it does have a volt meter. Now I just have to research how to hook it up!

    I've never had that problem. A bad diode is causing it?

    • @wyattoneable
      @wyattoneable  Před 7 lety

      You know, I'm not sure. I always thought the diode was to protect that alternator, not the wiring back to the ignition switch. DriveShaftDrew suggested it had a bad diode as well. The video I watched to find a fix didn't mention it, he made it sound like it was a normal thing that you had to include in your wiring.

    Nice work! I wonder what kind of wiring harness is in that Truck?

    • @wyattoneable
      @wyattoneable  Před 7 lety +1

      Multiple wiring harnesses until yesterday. The main one is from "EZ wiring". I removed a lot of unnecessary wires and have a video later about that mess.

  • @DriveShaftDrew
    @DriveShaftDrew Před 7 lety +1

    yup or replace the alternator as the diode is bad causing feedback lol
    could use that as a test right at the alternator as well rather than trying to work under the dash but good video and proof it works

    • @wyattoneable
      @wyattoneable  Před 7 lety +1

      Yeah your right. I was working under the dash anyway on another project so it worked out well. Thanks for the comment Drew.

  • @rchopp
    @rchopp Před 7 lety

    Well ain't that something, was it a one wire alternator?

    • @wyattoneable
      @wyattoneable  Před 7 lety

      Shoot, I should have included that but you can wire this as a one wire or two wire. I chose to wire it with one wire and the other (exciter) wire goes right back to the other terminal on the alternator. Your first!

    I think I would start making my crazy panic noises and wonder what I did wrong.

    • @wyattoneable
      @wyattoneable  Před 7 lety

      It was a bit strange but I just un did what I did. (ha ha) Meaning, I wired the alternator, so when it kept running I just unplugged the last wire I connected. Then it was off to CZcams to find the answer! And to talk to friends like you. :)
