There’s nothing better to hear some great rock and great lyrics and performance. The way meatloaf and the instrumental use was unreal. Why can’t today’s performers do this?

I grew up in the 70's. I'm sad to say I did not appreciate Bob Seger when I was young. Though I liked his songs on the radio well enough, we wasn't quite my style. But now I hear those old tunes and I realize I really missed out. I guess I had to mature 50 years to hear the heart wrenching soul of his work. I'm a fool.

I'm a huge Seger fan since his Live Bullet album, 1976, when I was 13/14 y/o and spent a lot of time thumbing through the record shops to find his earlier recordings ~ I have everything he ever recorded and I've seen him 13 times live ~ Have seen a lot of shows/bands live, but none brought the goods like Bob did ~ That's why he is in the R&R Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame and was named Rolling Stone's magazine, Legend of Live ~ The man literally had a 60 year career which is almost unheard of in the music business ~ His farewell tour in 2019 was the third highest grossing tour ~ I believe the lyrics and video do complement this song, which I agree I don't always find, but the lyrics are about the passage of time, how he felt then and how he feels now 20 years later and the changes that have come with it ~ The video has all young people waiting at the RR crossing along with just him and the train is the passage of time until it comes to the end and he can move on in his journey...

I think as far as the video goes, he's sitting on the hood of his car waiting for the train to pass and in that time, he's reflecting on his life. All the kids in cars on the other side represent his own recollections of his youth and the train represents the passage of time; all the years that have passed between then and now.

Loved your reaction! I now almost look at this as my personal anthem - except I sing "40 years now... where'd they go?...like a rock..."
My interpreation is: Especially when you are young - you face the challenges of life with all your strength and integrity ans press firmly against the wind! When you age you have been tempered by lifes challenges but you've made it this far.. but you still yearn for the sense of humor, vigor, speed and strength of your youth... and you look back in wonder with how the years have evaporated so quickly.

You made an excellent observation. I always appreciate your sensitivity to the music and you correctly stated that listening and hearing a song without visuals is very different from seeing a video as you listen. Videos can be (visually and mentally) distracting from the essentials of the song. The music and the lyrics by themselves allow each person their own interpretation. 💕👍

This song when it came out I was 19. I was like a Rock now at 56 I got more years behind me then I got in front of me. I listen to this now and my life plays back like a movie getting married having the kids buying the house career now the house is paid off kids are grown up and we have grandchildren it makes more sense now then it back in 86.

To be able to write like that arrange songs then sing like that. Bob Seger is gold. I feel blessed have grown up in what I think is the golden era of music (70's until now). There are fewer great bands today, of course but there are some fantastic artists today, most of which don't have much are any commercial success because thankfully artists are getting wise to the business. Now you have to dig for the really good music, back then there were so many great artists that everything on the radio just about was great music.

Don’t know about other parts of the world, or current times, but Bob is telling the truth about young American men growing up in those days. You were expected to get a low paying, strenuous job, work you butt off, sweating while digging ditches, laying sod, roofing houses, working on a road crew, or some other tough, physical work. Even though the work was hot and sweaty, you built muscle and felt great. Exhausted, but great. 18 years of age is over fifty years ago for me.

Great band! Not related. Stewart Copeland named the band The Police. Restless, Stewart decided to form a trio fashioned on the vibe and energy of punk music. He would call this project “The Police,” a provocative name in its time that capitalized on the everyday brawls that broke out between punks and law enforcement: a regular police presence in the streets of London meant free marketing for his band.
