    Thank you Dr McDougall. Its because of you that this 63 year old now eats aplant based diet. I always felt a vegan diet was the healtiest but seemed difficult because I thought it meant vegatables only. It was you that taught me that startches are part of the vegan diet.

    For me a whole food plant based diet with whole grains and vegetables and fruits are delicious without any additions. I started on this journey 40-years ago with the Nathan Pritikin's books. I saw my dad die from ALS and that convinced me to give up my old ways. My husband also was receptive. Taste buds change quickly and so will your microbiome/ immune system improve.

      @@senfglas214 - It’s not just this one comment but many more success stories by vegans that are easily found. I have friends who’ve been vegan for 40+ years as well and they are the healthiest people I know. A properly balanced vegan diet is healthy and has been proven to add years of life.

    Dan Buettner: "Somewhere along the line, the 'paleo' people have hijacked the traditional diet with this nonsense that we were killing a bison and eating that everyday, but to the extent that we can piece together the paleo diet, it was probably mostly gathered foods like roots and berries and nuts... And occasionally there would be a kill, but that wasn't around long because you couldn't refrigerate it. So they were also largely plant-based."

      So right, and if we were meant to eat meat we would have been born with the perfectly designed physiology we needed, like any real carnivore, and not have to invent weapons. Also, the idea that grains and legumes are excluded because we didn't start eating them until the dawn of agriculture is just ridiculous! Obviously the "first farmers" would choose seeds from the favored plants, the ones we relied on for sustenance but had to gather from far and wide. They were the FIRST choice to plant locally with intention because they were nourishing and traditional food, they weren't just pulled out of nowhere! Any nonsense to sell books and products to the gullible to make $$$.

      2001 pubmed article: The relationship of nutrient intakes to life expectancies in Japan since the Second World War has demonstrated that sufficient intakes of animal protein and fat are crucial for attaining longevity.

      @@billparsonsartist8565 No it has not as Japan is still the country with highest life expectancy, the highest egg consumption rate, the highest IQ and one of the lowest cancer and obesity rates in the world. Yes some people are starting to eat fast food there, and you see that everywhere but not everyone does that even though there is junk food 1 mile from their home. People make choices. When the 1992 study was done it was from the early 1970's before there was fast food in Okinawa or Japan.

    I would love to let Dr. McDougall know that he completely changed my and my wife's life! I had 2 close friends who were plant-based over a dozen years ago, and they directed me to Dr. McDougall's videos and to restaurants that feature a McDougall Menu. I began to learn on my own and encourage my wife. Now, 12 years later, we have been on a solid plant-based diet for over a dozen years! We are in good health in our late 60s, ideal weight, ideal blood numbers, no medications. We go to a gym. We TRY to introduce others to plant-based eating, but man, that is SO difficult! We were with a couple yesterday in their early 50s, nearly 20 years younger than we are. They have serious health issues, overweight, and my wife and I both felt like we were with people who were biologically older than we are! That was a shock. Anyway, THANK YOU for all you do. I wish we could change the world! I am always learning and ready to hear what I can do to get more people on board. So please consider us your allies. Best wishes!

    I completely agree when Dan said, "Automate it." That is the key. I have 7 basic recipes and ingredients to make them on hand. My freezer has tv dinners and soups I made and freeze so I am never more than 5 minutes from a meal. I keep an emergency frozen meal at work too. This planning plus carrying ice water thermos with me EVERYWHERE keeps me on track.

      My emergency lunch or dessert plan is 1 cup soymilk, 1 sliced frozen banana, 1/2 cup rinsed drained canned black beans, 1 cup frozen cauliflower florets, 1 tablespoon cocoa powder, 2 soaked pitted medjool dates plus their soaking water and enough water to blend. Blend in a powerful blender. Tastes exactly like a thick, rich frozen milkshake. I use my Ninja blender. Can add a pinch cinnamon if you like chocolate with cinnamon-- I don't add it. Makes 1 giant shake or 2 normal servings. You can't taste the beans or cauliflower at all.

    Pittsburgh is booming with vegan/plant based restaurants just in past couple years! Very excited about that. And I've noticed some have a vegan/vegetarian menu if not totally plant based restaurant.

    Great interview... Love the stories Dan tells about working to change the surroundings instead of getting people to change. Makes sense. I remember thinking about how to get my kids to eat more vegetables, but couldn't, yet when we went to this little coffee shop for a meal out, they always ordered salad before a meal when offered. I thought, well heck, I can do that, so I started giving them a salad before the evening meal, and they ate it... Hah. I still didn't get the whole thing, I made meat meals till the early 80s, but still I get the idea of changing the surroundings. The kids were grown by then, but were thinking about a better way of life.

    I was addicted to meats, fats, sugars, processed foods. Now I eat only low-fat unprocessed plants. I found it easier to go to 100% than 99%. When I tried 99%, it became 90%, and then 70%, and then 50%.

    There are several huge roadblocks in getting people to eat more whole plant foods.
    Dietary change is extremely difficult for the majority due to the taste difference between salty, sugary fat foods and the more boring vegetable foods. Fruits are little different because they are big on a sugary-like taste. I eat only a WFPB diet now (1.5 years so far) but still completely miss a good hamburger, sticky buns, pizza, barbecue spareribs, etc. Sometimes it takes some very strong will power to overcome the craving especially at family events that serve these items. And because the big illnesses from a bad diet (cancer, heart disease, diabetes) are kind of slow-moving people don’t strongly equate the foods they eat now with a disease 30 years in the future. There is that long term mental disconnect in a world where the emphasis is on quickness. Trying to convince most people to stop eating delicious pizza and hamburgers altogether and instead eat brown rice, broccoli, beans, sweet potatoes and asparagus (even tastily prepared) is like convincing someone to skydive. I find it is that hard.
    I admit I do not find every fruit, bean or vegetable completely enjoyable no matter what recipe I use. It just sometimes can’t equate to a really good pizza slice. But I stick with it because my desire is to avoid doctors and hospitals (which I totally fear) in the future. That is the end reason I stick with it. But no matter how much evidence I show people (such as trying to get people to just read The China Study) most people brush what I say off as a temporary societal whim with no good hard proof. It is like you are trying to take an American’s car away (you know how much we love cars).

      Occasionally I make plant based pizza and top it with fresh/roasted veggies, garlic cloves, pineapple, corn, etc. No fake or real cheese. I also make "hamburgers" using Jeff Novick's bean burger recipe and serve it with air fried homemade french fries. I also make oven baked falafel from scratch and store extras in my freezer. Of course I make so many curries from PCRM India website. Basically I can make almost any food low-fat, no added sugar/salt, etc. I don't used processed vegan foods. Yes I even make BBQ using my personal favorite-- tofu. I drain, press, and then freeze it in big squares or I will make BBQ lentils and serve it like a sloppy Joe.

      I don't miss the meat but I miss the flavour, so I made the effort to learn how to cooking plant based meal with those flavours. Bean burger with a good burger sauce is as delicious as a meat burger. I prefer a cheeseless pizza with a really good tomato or pesto pizza sauce base. Tempeh and beans with a good barbecue sauce is as delicious as a spare ribs. In fact, currently I'm obsessed with the viral jacket potato drenched with baked beans in the UK. I replace the cheese with some sprinkles of nutritional yeast. Nowadays, everytime I look at meat, dairy, and junk food, all I could think are cancers, heart diseases and obesity I would get, as well as the terrible bowel movement I get in the past (almost daily) when I was on a meat/ultra processed food diet.

    There are so many great vegan chef CZcams channels - Rainbowplantlife, avantgardevegan, Minimalist baker, edgy veg, Simnett nutrition, just to name a few. They are not all oil-free and most do include some salt/sugar(in some form), but you can adjust as you like and the recipes are delicious and a step above for those who are ready to really dig into vegan food with a lot of flavor, but may take a little longer to make. Going plant-based has really upped my cooking skills and my husband now eats all of my food, although he does still augment with some meat. But it does take time and effort if you don't live in a culture that has grown up eating this way. For busy families, making fast, plant-based meals that everyone really enjoys eating can be a real challenge, especially when just starting. That's why we should never disparage anyone's attempts at this lifestyle - even small changes can make a big difference down the road and plant a seed that can sprout into something really wonderful.

    Promoting a "traditional" diet of our ancestors will be easier for the general populace to accept. Hopefully this idea will gain momentum! I'm going to continue to eat plants! I'd like to believe we can change the people to save mother earth but I think Dan's scenario of this society failing as previous ones have leaving the few remaining people to start all over again.. let's change the world before the collapse occurs!     LOL!! One of the hardest things for me to give up was toast. I found I could thin slice a large sweet potato diagonally and freeze the slices to be ready to pop into a toaster as a base for peanut or almond butter with maybe some sliced bananas ;=)

    The present paper examines the relationship of nutritional status to further life expectancy and health status in the Japanese elderly based on 3 epidemiological studies. 1. Nutrient intakes in 94 Japanese centenarians investigated between 1972 and 1973 showed a higher proportion of animal protein to total proteins than in contemporary average Japanese. 2. High intakes of milk and fats and oils had favorable effects on 10-year (1976-1986) survivorship in 422 urban residents aged 69-71. The survivors revealed a longitudinal increase in intakes of animal foods such as eggs, milk, fish and meat over the 10 years.

      @@Patrick_Ross Well if you read the article I listed called, "Nutrition for the Japanese elderly" it is about the centenarians in Okinawa who live longer and in better health than the places you visited. The article was published in 1992 from studies 1972-1986.

    A healthier plant-based version of oil, salt and sugar might be just the thing to make plant-based whole-foods more appealing (or even addictive) and it doesn't have to use 'free oils' or trans- or saturated fats. For years, a friend of mine has been hooked on a tahini sauce she makes to pour over Buddha bowls. It's just tahini (fat), white miso paste (salt and sweet), lemon juice (acid) and turmeric. She eats very healthy lunches because of it.

      @@laurenolsberg7060 I don't, I'm afraid. I've asked her a few times for measurements but she says she just eyeballs it, so I'm no further on with it. You might find a similar recipe online with measurements. I think the ratio of tahini to miso and lemon juice is probably the most important element. Then it'd be a case of adjusting the proportions to your own taste the next time you make it. She adds turmeric for health benefits but turmeric needs black pepper to make it more bioavailable, which she doesn't add, so I'd probably put a little coarsely ground black pepper in the salad or Buddha bowl, rather than in the dressing, in case it changes the flavour of the sauce too much. I think she uses the lighter (hulled) tahini, which has a milder flavour, and she definitely uses white miso, not a darker miso. White miso is both salty and sweet, unlike the darker misos, which are more savoury. I hope that helps somewhat 🙂

    I've been thinking of following a whole food plant based but I just struggle with going out with friends and eating with friends. That is the hardest thing for me. Staying home not so much but being with friends.

      I take my food with me and explain to the restaurant about my health needs. I tip the server as if I ordered a meal. Or I order a bare naked lettuce salad and top it with a squirt of fresh lemon AND eat a meal before I go to avoid temptation. Another strategy I use is meeting for "coffee" at McDonald's as it's cheap and many have tables outside. If we need to be inside then a coffee shop instead.

      Baked potatoes & salad bars are now coming back to steakhouses. U can always get a baked potato & salad @ Wendys. Some convenient stores sell vegan subs. U can also go to a Chinese restaurant & get sushi bar, lotsa Chinese restaurants will also steam vegetables on request & always ask if they put oil in their rice. Sometimes they will serve rice to u b4 they out the oil in!

Everything they have that could be vegan has cheese or loaded with oil . It’s truely sad. I don’t know Bill personally, but I bet his chief creates wonderful vegan meals for him when he’s in town.     Was it in ancient China that doctors were paid to keep people well and penalised financially if their patients fell ill? Switching the reason for payment from sick care to health care - within a tax-funded Medicare for All system - might be a good incentive for doctors to learn how to treat illness with diet and lifestyle!

      Later she directed me to a drawer that held her serving utensils. I opened the wrong drawer. There sat a 9×13 pan of brownies.
      Yet I know she tells her doctors she really eats healthy.

      @@virginiatozier9957 I get your point and I agree that doctors should not be punished for their patients' choices. I was just thinking back to something I had read a long time ago and tossing the idea out there. If I recall the context of my remark, Dr McDougall said something about there not being enough financial incentive for medics to switch to lifestyle approaches, as big money is made through expensive procedures. That is not the case for every doctor, though, of course, and most are just trying to make an honest living and help their patients. If there was a stronger emphasis on lifestyle medicine and doctor-patient co-operation, though, your friend might not feel the need to lie to her doctor and he or she would be giving your friend the correct advice to stay healthy.

      @@Equinox1.5 no love her as I do, I recognize she has switched addictions. She's not ready to face that yet .
      My husband an I have had some jolly times standing up for our briefs when it comes to doctors.
      Some were wonderful and believed in nutrition centered cures, some were condescending. My favorite were two young visiting German cardiologist. They came into the room determined to "Dr. House" us. The hospital had put a patient rights pamphlet in every room. My Bill had a, without medicine, cholesterol of 134. They weren't impressed. I asked them what their numbers were. They said they didn't know. Right , cardiologist don't know their numbers.
      Anyway I read the part of the pamphlet that said they work for us.
      They quit. Lol.
      My dear husband died 8/13/20 of CIDP which we think he got from working on nukie subs in the navy.

      Yes, we do need to stand up for ourselves in medical situations.
      So many environmental and nutritional factors are making it harder to live healthily in the modern world. On the upside, the scientific knowledge and experiential understanding of good nutrition have been coming on in leaps and bounds. I hope lifestyle medicine will become the health paradigm of the future, if we act quickly enough to have a future on this planet!

      As far as changing the world, I can't make laws, and I can't move millions but a long time ago I realized I could take my hand out of harming it.

    I looked up Dr Ms soup line on Amazon ..the lentil soup looks great ..similar to mine ...but why does it have cane sugar in it ?? ...I don't use sugar in any of my soups ..really no need to .

      @@sandray7609 Wikipedia says Buettner is a storyteller not a scientist or Anthropologist.The blue zones in rural areas do not have access to fortified foods and do not take vitamins and supplements so they are consuming at least 15% animal products to get B3, B12, A1, K2, CoQ10. Iodine, Sphingolipids, Selenium.

    Dan Buettner sounds like he is making a real difference in the health of whole populations. He has a boots on the ground approach. You cannot fault the results even if you don't completely agree with the macros. On a different subject...only 10% of greenhouse gases are due to the (belching) effects of of hogs and steer, not the 50% quoted here. The most direct way to CO2 emission reduction is limitation of burning hydrocarbons in industry first, and auto/truck emissions second.

    $$$$: John and Dan are honest about a big source of the problem - doctors' incentives. Doctors could make $150,000 a year treating mostly through diet. But we give them the option of making $500,000 a year not doing that. To change the result, we need to remove the $500,000 option. As a bonus, wealth inequality would be much less. Regular middle class and working class folks are getting tens of thousands of dollars taken behind the scenes from their paychecks to cover half million dollar incomes in medicine.

    It’s strange that we have so many cooking shows on tv and still, people can’t figure out the power of simple garlic granules and lime juice.
    But then again, we’re literally born chewing on our fingers and shitting our pants. That’s the design. And it’s the best game in town - we dominate the planet. One day we won’t - perhaps, also by design.
    My farts smell like pumpkin pie, urine smells like KFC. I run and wonder how much time I have for this while never breathing through my mouth anymore.
    It’s like we have two different species of human on Earth. So long as the choice is mine, it’s an obvious one to make.

    Demonizing doctors is not the answer either. Our system doesn’t allow for longer patient visits which is not in our control. Additionally most patients ask for a pill solution. We are taught that diet and lifestyle are the primary treatment however there is little support for this in our communities.

    Gender bias not in native America societies where women did most the work dressed and prepared the meat where the heck are you getting your information I wish you would explain it like your belief about sugar being added to the rice diet to balance out the protein, not it was more to add calories cause rice in case you haven’t looked doesn’t have that much protein to begin with so I wish you’d explain where you get those pieces of information?

    I got a REAL bad habbit with these Sweet Potatoes. And I just gotta say, “I LOOOOOOVE hearing good things about my bad habits 🤗🤗🤗”
    Check THIS out. I upped my potato intake from 55% of my calories to 60% of my calories.
    And I’m glad I did because I binge in my sleep.
    I made the item on which I binge the almighty banana. I just love the creaminess in the middle of the night. I always thought if I just make my worst junk food healthier and less harmful and just keep doing THAT with consistency, I’ll eventually get healthy. Success is a moving target.
    I went overboard with 650 calories, where I normally do around 450.
    This diet is SO SOLID that last night’s extra binge calories only brings my potato intake down to 55%
    And if I wanna bump my potato intake back up to 60% for the day’s calories, I’m only looking at adding and extra 200 calories to my diet.
    Being on a McDougall diet means WHEN you a mistake, correcting it is a BREEZE!!
    This is the hallmark of a solid plan : what do I have to do to correct my mistake?
    An extra few minutes of jumping jacks.
    You can’t find this kind of ease on ANY other diet.
    By the calories:
    60% potato
    20% fruit
    20% veg
    is real nice - going overboard on a midnight junkfood banana binge leaves me with
    53% potato
    30% fruit
    17% veg
    I can still overeat on this plan so I took 30% of my veg calories and made them raw for my first meal: 150 calories of broccoli or brussel sprouts with chunky salsa, just to help titrate out those few hundred calories I tend to overeat that slowly lead to me slipping in my weight. It’s a nice little tweak. Small adjustments.

    When I eat, I eat big, fast and until I’m FULL. I mean FULL. I eat like a big boy. No joke.
    When John says, “If you aren’t getting over 50 or 60% of your calories from starch, YOU AINT GONNA MAKE IT, “ he’s NOT LYING.
    I got on a scale yesterday fully dressed with everything I walk around with daily: scale said 165lbs. I got naked, scale said 141.9.

    John, I KNOW you’re reading this: I’m a real lover of McCann’s Irish Apple Cinnamon Oats. Lowest-fat oats I’ve ever found. I use them as my worst junk food - just one, every now and then.
    I add allspice, cayenne, turmeric, mint and CLOVE to the dry pacquette - they’re THAT GOOD. I eat them dry to get my granola fix. I keep it with me in case I’m somewhere and unable to cook the potato in my bag (rare but it happens sometimes) - I know how to have my own back.
    I love these oats. And it’s a starch. I want to wear a trucker hat that’s black and green to honor McCann’s glory and I want it to say, “McDougall Disciple.”
    Could you see if Heather has the time to offer these for sale? SHE DOESN’T. No way.
