"Plainsong" is amazing. Once I was listening to this song in the middle of nowhere, on a very cloudy, windy day, mid Winter. The emotions it delivered to me were indescribable and powerful and I was almost crying, shaking and profoundly moved. If there is a Holy Trinity it must be the first three songs from "Disintegration". "Faith" is very very very underrated.

You did a great job in summarizing The Cure's musical history in a few minutes. For me, who grew up completely taken over by this mood, rhytm and lyrics, it is just too much stuff to express in words so shortly.
There was always two distinct musical flows to The Cure: their natural heavy, bitter self mocking way to compose and perform and the more comercial guided thing required by a big contract. The Cure is everything you said and more. Ocassionally I take my time to rediscover The Cure and it is always great.

I love The Top and think it should be much higher on the list. Birdmad Girl is one of the best Cure songs. To me, The Top is like God says to Robert Smith, "OK, Robert. You've been a big music fan your whole life, you've been exposed to the best music, and you're an established rock singer-songwriter. Now, what do you REALLY want to do?" And The Top is Robert's answer.

It’s a good album, with some good ideas - I just feel those ideas are better executed on other albums. It was a step in the right direction when the band were trying to find the sound between pop and post punk which I feel they achieved on the three albums that followed it.

Honestly I think the album suffers from the production. I remember one magazine review said it sounds like Robert was just burnt out during the mixing and needed an extra pair of ears in the studio. I've been a fan of The Cure since hearing Love Song, Just Like Heaven and Lullaby on the radio growing up. I heard Disintegration when I was about 16 and thought it was pretty amazing, but then didn't really get into The Cure until some edgy friends introduced me to all of the back catalogue as I was going through some rough emotional shit in my late teens. I went to their Wish tour concert in 1992 and saw how incredible they are live, and have been to every concert of theirs near me since.
I mostly agree with your listing and comments and can honestly say my top three are: 1. Disintegration, 2. Pornography and a tie between 3. Faith and 17 Seconds. My favourite tracks are A Forest, Fascination Street, A Strange Day and All Cats are Grey. Simon's bass is sublime, Robert's guitar is unmistakeably recognisable and his lyricism is beautiful and poetic. An iconic band that my kids know - I am glad to say they have grown up listening to The Cure and I hope they love them as much as I do.

4:13 is massively underrated in my opinion. I didn't like it much when it came out and forgot about it. Gave it another try during lockdown and after a few listens it clicked. It's a real slow burner, songs like Switch and It's Over are immense, typical Robert rants. I saw an interview somewhere where Robert said The Hungry Ghost is one of his favourite songs he's written. Then he said that people don't really appreciate it because it's not culturally relevant, unlike A Forest. When he said that, it changed my whole mindset towards the album and I just listen to the songs for their own sake now. The Cure don't hold the same place in music as they did 25 - 30 years ago but they are still a sincere band with their own vision and way of doing things. I'd put that album in my top 5 Cure albums

_Wish_ is my mother's favorite Cure album, and after picking it up at a thrift store and listening to it, I can definitely see why. The whole disc is a roller coaster of emotions, sending you to blissful highs (High, Doing The Unstuck, Friday I'm In Love) before plummeting you to deep, dark lows (Trust, Open, A Letter To Elise). My personal favorite is still _Disintegration_ for its darker, more gothic tone, but _Wish_ comes a very close second.

Wonderful breakdown. Can't argue with Disintegration, it's easily one of the 100 greatest albums of all time. The special thing about the remainder of The Cure's discography is that each album's greatness will be determined by what time of a person's life that they listened to it. For me personally Pornography remains the greatest Cure album because it arrived at a time in my life when I was confused and felt the world was conspiring against me. It spoke to me on a molecular level in sound and aesthetic. It influenced my art, my writing, my photography, my dressing, my language. It was, for all intents and purposes, the most true thing that existed in my life at that moment. It started the foundation of a series of albums that would speak to me on similar levels: Depeche Mode's 'Violator', Nine Inch Nails' 'The Downward Spiral' and Public Enemy's 'Fear of a Black Planet.' I wouldn't have been able to personally access those records if it weren't for Pornography.

One of my favorite songs by The Cure and of all time has to be Doing The Unstuck off of Wish. I can't quite describe why but it just is; I don't even have a specific memory attached to it. I first saw it was a fun song to drive fast to but the more I listened to it the more I began to enjoy and appreciated it. There's something serene but faced paced, soft but rough, and just overall a beautiful track. I feel as if I'm being taken away from the hardships of this life and being transported to another world. There's an overarching feeling of escape and bliss (probably because of Robert's frequent drug use and the line "Let's get happy"). Every instrument and layer feels perfect to me. It just brings me so much joy.

I was 15 when Disintegration came out and for a number of years I tought it was their masterpiece... but 30+ years on... for me their best albums are the ones I keep coming back to - - more than the others - that haven't really aged... that are timeless... and that for me is Seventeen Seconds and Faith. Half of Wish is great - and the b-sides are better than some of the album tracks. Friday I'm in Love is like a nursery rhyme crossed with a toothpaste commercial... and of all their post Wish output - there are probably just enough truly great songs to fit on one album.

I only put WMS up a bit higher on the list because it was the tour I first saw them on. Fun fact, my first Cure gig was also where the Gone video was filmed in 1996. it was at The Great Western Forum in Inglewood, CA. I got to see them about 4 more times btw between 1997-2000 (probably why I enjoyed Bloodflowers a bit more too). Been a fan since at least 1986 and have never looked back. So psyched that not only is Wish FINALLY getting the deluxe reissue treatment but we're (hopefully) getting a new freaking album later this year (with Reeves Gabrels!). Cure for life!
EDIT: My two all time, tied for #1 Cure albums are Disintegration & Pornography (in that order).
So my list goes as follows:
    13. 4:13 Dream
    12. The Cure (agreed that it's a great album overall but it's the production that kills it for me)
    11. Bloodflowers (only in this spot because IMHO, it starts off amazing then falls flat midway...but the closer title cut is divine....especially live).
    10. Wild Mood Swings (in this spot only because I first saw them live on this tour...so I'm a bit biased)
    9. Japanese Whispers
    8. Faith/Carnage Visors
    7. Seventeen Seconds

Joke aside, interesting to see your list. Wish is a masterpiece. Bloodflowers felt like a goodbye. I never got into the latest 2, and can't even remember any songs. Kiss Me is perfect, but most albums from Faith onwards work cohesively: each song brings something. Wild Mood Swings was weird: Jupiter Crash is excellent, Want just fell flat when the beat entered (I saw them live on that tour...). And Bloodflowers felt like they sobered up, were not trying to be, but were themselves (unlike Wild Mood Swings).
