This one is the novelty one to simply own and not use.
The one to own AND use is the "GB Boy Colour" with the built-in games.
Grab one of those and review it. I own a couple and they rock.
+Michael Thompson I'll see if I can get one some day. But I had to own this one, I couldn't believe someone would make a green LCD screen game handheld these days.
Think of it as an interesting side note to the massive, massive popularity of Nintendo's Game Boy.
FYI: They also make an "SP" style GB Boy Colour; however it has no built-in games and the quality isn't up to the GBC-style GB Boy Colour.
Sorry to draw this out, but I went and grabbed the link. Try this and you will like it:

+Michael Thompson If you like the GB Boy as a side note to the Gameboy I've got a few other handhelds that were imitations of the Gameboy I'll show off in the next few months!
I hope I've found the right channel. Would love to see your whole gameboy collection. I use my GCW now for exclusively just playing the GB library.
Good to see you back nick!
Hey, Aaron!
Great to see you too. I've thought about starting a Gameboy themed show for my channel. I know my way around the Gameboy library pretty well, but I might send you another PM in a few weeks to help me pick out some titles! I'll keep in touch, good to hear from you!
"A gameboy pocket on crack" HAHAHAHAHA
I noticed the speed immediately; the music was pitched a full step higher on the GB Boy than on the Game Boy Pocket.
These reviews of knockoff handhelds kinda remind me of ashens' channel back when it was good. Subscribed.
+Evangelo Mabalot Yeah, Ashen's content has suffered over the years. Too much Lootcrate and other sponsored crap. I check him out every now and then to see what he's up to, he's still one of the best presenters. Thanks for subscribing!
StopDrop&Retro That's true. He's still funny, and I still like his channel, but like you said his newer content seems to be mostly about stuff I don't really care about.
Just keep reviewing knockoff video game consoles / handhelds / other weird stuff and you've got a happy subscriber here.
Now we just need the GB Boi!
GB Boy Features:
1. Horrible screen invisibility and ghosting
2. Increased speed
Result:
GB Boy = Game Boy Super Challenge Mode
Too good at your Game Boy Games? Let's see how good you play them on this new GAME BOY CHALLENGE SYSTEM!!! You're guaranteed to have a much hardier challenge on this kind of Game Boy!!! :D
y'know, I never thought of it that way! It does provide a pretty neat challenge
And to think I was considering buying that. Thanks for the warning.
Great!!
That kinda thing botheres me too.. "GB boy" meaning gameboy boy. The one that really bothers me up to date is when they changed detective comics to "DC comics" making it "Detective comics comics"
Zachary Pearce Yeah the extra, unabbreviated word doesn't even add much. I love the "DC" logo and I'm sure if you walked down the street and showed the logo to random people they would know it's referring to the comic publisher.
I remember seeing the unit pictured at 1.24 at a down town market in Baltimore.
the speed increase can be a bit off putting but I feel it could actually be very welcome with the right game namely RPGs like Pokemon where you can accelerate your level grinding a bit
+The Notorious MW That's a good point. Some people even say that Zelda OOT is a little better with a speed up.
I liked this and I would like more goodies on my way
Hey, nice video. Subbed :D
Thanks! I'm going to feature more hardware reviews in the next coming weeks.
Bootlegs are always s fascinating, even though they're mostly horrid knockoffs.
The plastic spring also broke on my GBC Purple Transparent.
What is that handheld he pulls out at like 1:13? Is that the k101?
At least they got their act together when they made the gb boy color
+PixelPolygon I hear that one is a little better and it even has games preloaded on it.
I really liked mine. Great for Tetris.
It's pretty good for making music from what I hear. I plan on getting one soon and putting all the internals in an actual Gameboy case and then probably further modding it from there
+Psuedosquid Really!!??!? No way! Do you have any links? That would sound like a cool project. And to be honest I do think the Ducktales theme sounds better on the GB boy, even sped up since it's a little too slow on GB.
GB Boy has a 20% increased speed of sound and play.
It is necessary to replace the Crystal oscillator.
By default - 5 MHz, you need to change to 4 MHz or 4.19 MHz
It's the GameBox Boy!
the first known artifacts of the Gameboy were found in Lasceaux,France
cool ..I also like weird knock off sort of video game things keep up the interesting reviews of weird stuff...
Thanks!
Yeah, I'll be doing more and more product reviews since everyone loves those. I have a few reviews of mainstream hardware coming up, but stay turned because in November I'll have another review of a knock off console that's similar to this one and is VERY obscure. I'll leave it at that so I don't spoil it ;)
Thanks again for your comment!
There is a video on how to fix the clock speed issue, the guy in the video says it has something to do with the oscillator inside running the clock speed at 5MHz instead of 4.19MHz like in the original. It fixes the speed and ghosting on the screen. I have one of these GB boys coming in the mail, so ill have to see if this fix works.
i always find it funny when you say engrish in stead of English
To be fair, Nintendo has very high quality assurance methods when it comes to producing their consoles and handhelds, whereas a smaller company who's main goal is to piggyback off the popularity of the product it's ripping off, they most certainly won't care how bad their units are, just so long as they keep selling.
Just open up the GB Boy and swap out the Electronic Oscillator for a slower (original) one. I got a bulk shipment of the 4.194204 Mhz oscillator and I did a change for mine and it works. I have leftovers. If you want I can send some to you.
Never bought one of these, however the newer GB Boy Color is excellent. None of the issues this one has, plus it plays GBC carts. Still would have been nice for it to have a rechargeable battery.
The IR port is hilarious though, just a black piece of plastic with no IR Xmitter behind it lol.
What's the name of the emu handheld that you have at 1:13?
+leoalex50 That's a Dingoo A320. They don't make them anymore, but there are similar devices out there. Nowadays most people prefer to use their phones to emulate but I still like dedicated handhelds.
What's the name of that game boy pocket with the classic game boy color scheme?
+Andrew Borrayo I tried to look it up but didn't see that it was ever called anything! That's kinda cool, it's like the Japanese just sold the pocket in the same color as the original because why not? lol
Takes it out of box and immediately grinds it's screen into the back of another system... It makes me sad.
Will you review the GBB Boy?
Great episode. Any idea why it runs so fast?
No clue. But I would imagine it's a bug that wouldn't be hard to iron out. The GB Boy could still be shipped with the problem and the customer won't be able notice until it's too late, or their intended customer has never played a real game boy in the first place. Profits before quality, tisk tisk...
GamingGems I have a theory; Nintendo was aware of this, and the speed at which Super Mario Land plays on the GB Boy was the inspiration for the "Speed Mario Bros." Game included in Ultimate NES Remix for the 3DS. But hey, that's just a theory... a LAME theory.
Justin Kolata LOL! Maybe China has been the test market for Nintendo stuff all along. Here, we've been thinking they've been cloning stuff we got a long time ago. No wonder Nintendo doesn't send out their lawyers to stop them!
Game Theorist is awesome, well played.
Also, thanks for sharing my video!
Is this your 1st video on this channel?
do you know how to contact Kong Feng? I think they should ship it with LSDJ or make it flashable.
+jlebrech No, I don't. But I doubt they'd ever take up that idea as good as it is. They'd rather just have the cheapest GameBoy imitator and move onto the next product.
StopDrop&Retro I think if nintendo maybe a little gameboy like that for $100 they'd sell like hot cakes.
+jlebrech I agree, that's why I went for the Arduboy. I think when you have to work within certain limitations it can make a well designed game play idea really shine. You can see this in mobile from time to time, but it's pretty rare I have to admit.
Strangely my comment didn't show up, so here's a second try:
The speed is off because of a different clock crystal (oscillator) which was used building this unit.
It can actually be fixed easily by replacing it with a similar oscillator (4.19 mHz) as in the orginial GB pocket. This will fix the pitch and speed aswell as screen blur because things don't move as fast anymore.
Here is a video showing the process and result: /watch?v=hpeOfBsRUH8
Oh, wow! I I'm trying to decide in my head if it would be worth it, considering that's not the only problem with this handheld. Fixing that problem would be like installing a V8 in a Yugo.
cool review man
I'm Gona try one . for the price why not. like you said beats ruining the real one
you can mod the clock to play the games more slowly, someone post a video here on youtube.
+Alejandro Delgado yeah, another commenter pointed that out. It's nice to know that's the problem, but the handheld is so poor quality that fixing that part still doesn't do it much good.
is your Japanese Gb an official Nintendo....where can u get it best price
+Odyn York It is official, that color scheme was sold only in Japan. They're still available on eBay at good prices. Expect to pay $20-40
it's Great Britain Boy ofc. !
+jarnoob hahaha, if there was a customer support email I'd constantly send them emails asking if G_____ B_____ whatever is what the GB stands for.
I know what you mean, like RPG games
Oh this kind of crap. Total crap, but I still find them interesting..
+Dan Krolikowski You just described this handheld and my channel perfectly!
Yes future archeologists won't have access to the internet or videos like this.
What is the handheld in his hand at 1:16
hey i understand that this version of the gb boy sucks but would you recommend the gb boy color? im not talking about the other one you reviewed but the one thats a gameboy color clone. i hear its much better than this one with a back lit screen and built in games. but is it worth getting when i already have a normal gameboy color?
Game boy boy boi
man you got ripped off, i own a GB colour and its amazing. noooo issues at all. and has taken a fall without problem
+Richard Heckley I knew about the colour version, but I wanted the old LCD black and white model since no one makes them like this anymore.
Interesting that the American GB Pocket was made in Japan, but the Japanese version was made in China...odd that they outsourced a product that they already made for another country.
+ChozoSR388 hmmm.. maybe it depends on which year it was made?? I don't know. I have a US GB Pocket and it still says made in China.
Game Boy Boy
My green MGB is made in Japan...
+acalthu Oh wow, I guess some were. That's kinda weird then, I have a Chinese Gameboy Pocket that was exclusive to the Japanese market.
gb boy colour
I wonder why they never called a console The Game Man.
The GB Boy Colour is very nice, while the GB Boy has a bad Screen and it`s way too fast. Strange
Gb boy colour man
The reason why they made such a bad copy could be very simple. The guys that design the copy never like to play these ancient games. For them it's just about copy, with the most cheap and still available electronic components. Because components generally speaking nowadays are much faster then before the internal clock speed will be somewhat faster. It's of course possible to adjust for this but it's all about making money quickly, so a total or partial redesign is out of the question
None of my GB Boys play fast. Maybe mine were made later? The ones I have work fine, no speed ups.
+Louis Perez It could be. It's definitely running faster and another commenter told me that there's a way to fix it, but there are so many other issues with the product that I don't think putting in that kind of effort is going to give good results.
+Kamil Niewiadomski No, it is definitely not a PAL/NTSC problem because there is no such thing with Gameboy. Until the 3DS, all handhelds were "region free" meaning they take any cart from any region because they didn't have to worry about different frame rates like you do with PAL/NTSC TVs, since the handheld has its own screen. There's someone who posted a video about how to correct this, it is definitely some sort of oscillator they got wrong and that is what speeds it up.
this gb boy would be good for sonic 3d blast bootleg cuz
got to go fast
+Isaias Aguirre Hey, I didn't even think of that! This might be worth revising for some of those games that play too slow.
sickening that these have almost doubled in price since this video...
+Yexils Out of all the things in my collection, I never thought clone consoles would have some of the best appreciation money-wise!
I enjoy clones(I am using all my tip money from work for a few this month) but they are mass produced poorly & sold on such a rapid pace. Only reason why I think these are selling higher & higher is because of all the youtubers praising an okay to poor unit with a black lit screen.
P.s. Don't look up the Generation NEX the resale price could give most collectors a migraine.
I got a cheap portable famicom online for 25 bucks. Its actually pretty solid, but mario bros is the only game that runs to fast on it. Hmm...
+Atari Game Lord I have one that's very old, I think it might be one of the first portable famicoms. I'll make sure to do a video on it, but I need to work it into the schedule.
We need to give rip-off producing thieves time to get up to speed? Fuck that.
Game Boy On Crack!
i think in middle school, a girl in my class hand this, it was so werid but, at the time i was thinking it was the coolest thing
+nightbound92 oh my bad this clearly wasnt it, as i was in middle school in the early 2000's
+nightbound92 Maybe it was a Neo Geo Pocket? Or a Bandai Wonderswan? Those were around in that time frame.
Do you Ashens much?
0:42 girlfriend boy?
It's cheaper, isn't it? What did you expect?
+CathodeRayTube99 But I didn't expect it to be this bad. They had the Gameboy production lines up 25 years ago and they made an inferior product very recently, it doesn't make sense.
6:29 Made in China doesn't mean designed in China.
Ambidextroid lol. Okay, I guess any one of us could be wrong then! The point was that they were manufactured original GameBoys and now, many years later, they're manufacturing a similar product that has even worse quality.
+StopDrop&Retro Basically all of the parts for Nintendo's products such as Game Boy, GBP, GBC, GBA, DS, DS lite, 3DS, controllers for console, game cartridges, etc., were design and made by Nintendo from their headquarter in Japan but all the labors such as all the screws, assemblies, and inspection were done at facilities own by Nintendo in Japan, China, and Mexico which is why you see a lot of their product listed as Made in Japan, China or Mexico or Assemble in Japan, China or Mexico. Basically NOJ sent all the parts to those facilities and they just manufactured them before shipping them to market. The GB Boy; however, is made of China's own cheap materials which is why it is not a very reliable product.
If you look at these Game Boy parts below you'll notice that the sticker on some of them said Made in China while some said Made in Japan.

+StopDrop&Retro I will say, a later model of the GB Boy (the GB boy Colour), which is a clone of the Gameboy Color is pretty good. It has a nice back-lit screen, good battery life, moderate build-quality and has 66 built-in games. The only major problem is that the aspect ratio is a little bit off.
engrish?
Engrish=bad english spoked by japanese people (or chinese in this case) Thats how people call the bad english you can hear in animes
To expound upon your explanation, it's called Engrish because Asians usually swap L and R sounds.
Riflemanm16a2 At our (Japanese) company we called it Jenglish or Jinglish. The Chinese version is of course Chinglish
I actualy own a gb boy, and true to chinece quality, its inconsistent. mine does not emulate too fast, but the screen is horrible. But yea i never got to own a gameboy, or play the original pokemon games, so i got a chinece pokemon gameboy cart aswell to go with it
Yeah, how about putting a big sticker on shitty clones saying, this system contains a high value lesson once in use, haha lol, just to trick peoples .
Well yeah, But GF Boy wound sound like Girlfriend Boy, and I'm sure people won't buy something what that name. Well maybe homosexuals, but you get what I mean
So not gb boy
Gf boy!
Girl friend boy!
Get gb boy colour
I can't understand why you would think they have any reason to make something better. The point was to make money not satisfy customers. They had zero plans to make more than the first batch. This is where the American brain fails at understanding the Asian markets.
I thing the game boy poket its bether...
if you want cheep shit console buy mp5 they support game to gba
There's tons of MP5 consoles out there. Check out my S200 review, I did try one out and well... it didn't really turn out that great!
Thank you for your comment!
Alexas Murauskas It's been a while, but I did make one last week and posted a quick one today. Bah! CZcams must be up to their usual shenanigans! Thanks for watching!
you gamer's are weird ... the D pad feels off to you because you have been playing with the game boy your whole life ....
WORST
the GB boy colour is a much better upgrade
