    Follow along as we install a light weight Sky-Tec starter on a Cessna c140. Engine is a Continental c90, basically the same as an O-200.

    Really appreciate what it must take to record this installation. Very informative!

    Fantastic work, thank you. I learned a lot. First thing I do when I get to my hangar next will be to check whether my alternator charge cable has the appropriate breaker installed.

    Very well done. Thank you. Have a C85 that presently is pissing oil out from the "pull" start plunger/shaft. I'll replace that seal for now but this mod seems well worth the expenditure. The plastic cup thing is genius. I know someone who did this mod w/out it and wound up trashing the engine. Until your vid, I didn't realize that a form fitting protective cup was available.

      Yes, it comes with the conversation kit. Thanks for watching.

    Great Video! Perfect for my planned 0-300 starter conversion project. How long did it take to cut off the pinion shaft with the dremel? Also why did you do the conversion? We ran into problems with the pinion gear not engaging well even after adjustment, along with a lot of gear clash/grinding, esp. when the engine is cold.

    This is a great help to me with my C90! However, I am confused as in your Part 1 video you remove the jumper from the power stud as 15:25 (saying that it's for a different installation), and then in this one at 20:36 you seem to replace it! Please, which is correct?

    • @justinhoffman2236
      @justinhoffman2236  Před 9 měsíci

      Yeah, I made an attempt to explain this in the video; starting about 12min into this - part II video. I'll try to summarize: Basically, the "jumper" is only used when a separate/remote solenoid is used. However, this Cessna was never equipped with a solenoid and the installation directions called to remove the jumper and wire the "push to start" button directly to the Sky-Tec starter and NOT use a remote solenoid. As you can see in the video, I ran into a few problems with the existing wiring. After consulting with Sky-Tec's support, we decided to install the remote solenoid. This allowed me to fix the problematic wires but required the "jumper" to be reinstalled.

    Another nice video! Wind was howling there for awhile, a good day to be working inside. I enjoyed the time lapse there at the end while you were wiring everything, but I do have one question… what did you put on those terminals that you connected to the starter relay? It appeared red almost like generic grease, I know they also make a few different terminal protectant sprays, but I haven’t seen any of them in red. I assume whatever the product was, was for corrosion prevention right?

    • @justinhoffman2236
      @justinhoffman2236  Před 2 lety

      Yeah, it's just a "terminal" grease. I have it in a spray version; It's red in color, too. I like to use it on the larger copper terminals as corrosion/oxidation protection. IMO, the plain copper term ends seem to corrod quicker than the "tinned" versions.

    If you have the circuit breaker mounted on the firewall and it pops during a long flight, you will not be charging the battery…

    • @justinhoffman2236
      @justinhoffman2236  Před rokem +1

      I understand your point. But please consider the fact that having circuit protection beyond the reach of a pilot is common place in our industry; especially on larger/Turbine aircraft. As well, it is my opinion that "resetting" a circuit in flight can be very dangerous. If a circuit fails and the breaker us Tripped - resetting the breaker will Not clear the failure. Of course that could be debated but this is my opinion (for what it's worth). Years ago, I had a customer set an electric flap motor on fire because the repeatedly reset a breaker and continued to operate the flaps until complete failure... Just one of many things to consider in aviation.

    In the old delco remy starter. What is the pinion used for?
    I have a project on continental O300 engine, and I really can't find out what is the use of this pinion.

      Originally, the gear would slide on the shaft to engage/disengage the starter. Take a look at your starter and the mechanical engagement linkage and it'll make sense.

      It's a cut-off fiber wheel

      @@justinhoffman2236 well, thanks for the reply. ....I cut mine off a few months back. I found the plastic protector from someone who didn't use his and I got it pretty cheap....only issue is that there's not much room in there, 🤪

    Did the starter come with the plastic cup for catching the metal ?

    • @justinhoffman2236
      @justinhoffman2236  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes, the protective tray was part of the kit. It's a pretty nice kit. I would like to see a wire schematic addressing the option of Not using a separate solenoid. However, their Tech support is great and willing to answer any questions.

    How long did it take to install start to finish?

    • @justinhoffman2236
      @justinhoffman2236  Před 2 lety

      I had just over 12hrs total in the job. I worked on it over the course of three different days... I would guess it took me about 2hrs longer with setting up camera and recording than it would take otherwise.
