10 Fossil Hunting Tips You Should Know!

  • I am fossil hunting West of Lyme Regis today.I’m going fossil hunting along the Jurassic Coast at low tide. I’d like to find some of the beautiful little pyrite ammonites that wash out along the beach at low tide. Little nuggets of gold delight, saved from the shifting sands. I recommend wearing safety glasses and sturdy rubber gloves when hammering the right little rocks. I am going to show you a video of me splitting an ammonite out of a little limestone rock in the Summer months. This little rock splitting video has done very well on CZcams for me with millions of views.So look and learn how i spend alot of time sizing the rock up. Fossil hunting really does take hours of patience and persistence. I’m then going to show you me looking for those ammonite bearing rocks around January time. Remember the cliffs are dangerous and liable to fall suddenly and without warning. Keep away from the dangerous cliffs, the best fossils are washed out onto the beaches at low tide, by the sea's actions. Look out for the slippery seaweed on the ledges and rocks. I offer fossil walks along the Jurassic Coast on the following website, so feel free to take a look at the website I made, with our online fossil walks ------www.lymeregisfossilwalks.com There is a fossil collecting code of conduct in place along the Jurassic Coast.

    The larger fossil found in this video was a chunk of ammonite with suture patterns. The lines are formed at the intersection of the outer shell wall and the septa. We have longer CZcams videos, I go fossil hunting a lot at low tide in the Winter. czcams.com/video/WFwhRqpgK_o/video.html click the link to see our fossil hunting video thanks 🙏

      Thanks 🙏 very much for your comments, it is a real rugged and wild part of the world. It’s been subject to a lot of movement like landslides and mudslips and remains untouched for building on because of the landscapes dynamic nature!

    The sutures on that first ammonite piece you found are simply amazing, and that last rock you split is wonderful! I never ventured past the Ammonite Pavement before, but on my next trip I'm definitely going to Pinhay Bay after seeing your videos. Do you ever go to Stonebarrow? I found some nice things there but they are so hard to clean!

      Thanks 🙏 yes I do go to Stonebarrow a bit . I used to be there a lot at low tide when I was a lot younger. The fossil collecting around past the ammonite pavement can be good on the point there . There is quite a lot of iron pyrite there . The pyrite has some Promicroceras sp. ammonites in it . I’ve found some good vertebrae there as well ichthyosaur and plesiosaur

    Myself and partner are going to Lyme Regis in September and planning on trying to find our own fossils. We have a tide table from a previous visit for the current year but was wondering what kind of tide height would you say is suitable to go exploring during which would give us the best chance of finding some fossils?

    • @LymeRegisFossils
      @LymeRegisFossils  Před 6 dny +1

      September can be a good time of year to find fossils along the Jurassic Coast- at low tide. It’s best fossil hunting an hour before low tide and an hour afterwards. Beware of the dangerous cliffs that are liable to fall suddenly and without warning. I’m in my shop in September, so I will have an idea of the prevailing weather conditions and state of the beach.

      @@LymeRegisFossils We will definitely come and visit you in your shop! We are spending Monday to Friday in Lyme Regis for my birthday. I am autistic and fossils are one of my special interests so would be super excited to see if I could find my own special memories to take home with me from our trip😊
      I had a look at your website and saw that you’ll be doing walks again. How much do the fossil walks cost (not the private ones) and what kind of dates? Would be super cool to have this experience.

      Thanks we are lucky to be able to fossil hunt on the beaches of Lyme Regis - at low tide! The sea does the work for you washing the fossils out of the mudslides- and onto the beaches! There is a fossil collecting code in operation along the Jurassic Coast.
