Your videos have been very enlightening as I had an uncle who was a merchant mariner years ago and always wondered what life at sea would be like. Had I been aware, I might have made different choices when I was younger as a mariner's life always appealed to me. Keep up the good work as your videos are really interesting.

Hi Jeff. Im starting now in a Maritime academy in Greece. I love your videos! Could you make a video on the cabins of the crew in which you show the different cabins that each rank has? For example you show a cadet's cabin, a 3rd mate's, 2nd, chief's, captain's etc? I think it would be very insightfull and interesting. Keep up the good work!

@nico d Most ships do not allow any firearms on ships do to the complications of international law but, some companies will hire trained professionals when the ship is traveling in known pirate waters. I'm a student a Suny Maritime College in New York just took a class so we learned all about it.

@@aratherbadperson6937 So I actually finish be deck cadetship next week 😂, after a few covid related delays. I would say it's good but just be careful in choosing a sponsoring company as that tends to be most common reason people leave, I was a Clyde cadet but I'd strongly recommend the likes of MEF. Also with the current job market it would be really helpful to be with a company that'll hire you at the end, or maybe considering going for engineering. If you have any questions ask away.

How are you personally feeling about the job now that you've experienced the working conditions? (I've heard from some that life and labour on the ships is really shit, and getting shittier, more exploitative etc, but I've also heard from others that it all depends on the company you land up working for?)
How rigorous is the workload of the studying part of the course? like on average how many hours a day did you spend on your studies?
Was also wondering about how hard it is to get a sponsorship cadet berth / how competitive it is ? is it a matter of your academic achievements? or like overall 'worthiness'? Does the college help out with that at all?
were there any international students at the college with you at at the time? any that got cadetships? (Im actually south african, but was thinking of studying in glasgow cause here in South Africa we have a mega cadet-berth/ cadetship crisis, with very very few people actually landing up with sea-time or a job afterwards, but I found out the other day that when it comes to cadetships its more about nationality than where in the world you study (from what I saw on the chilltern maritime site MEF and Clyde are only obliged to take on European nationals. whereas very few companies still provide SA nationals cadetships (maersk abandoned us last year))
@@aratherbadperson6937 Yeah no bother, There seems to be far more jobs for qualified engineers coming up - in the UK at least, probably because engineers can easily find jobs onshore as well so they often don't stay at sea their whole careers therefore opening up jobs at sea.
I did all my sea time in the North Sea on offshore rescue and support vessels and I would say that the conditions were fairly decent even though I wasn't with the best of companies. However the offshore industry and the north sea in particular have incredibly strict rules and regulations so less likely to see that. From what I've heard deep sea (tankers, bulk carriers etc) is completely different it can be pretty exploitive but it is very dependant on the company and the nationality of the crew, Asian seafarers (India, Pakistan, Philippines, Myanmar, china etc) are generally exploited as they are willing to stay away from very long trips (8-12 months or more) and their recruitment agencies aren't exactly honest.
The course in general was only academically hard when getting ready for exams during the college phases and now everything together getting ready for the final oral exam. Probably only averaged an hour a day over 3 years but at some points it can go up to like 10-12 hours a day. When in college though you are in classes 8 hours a day anyway.
In the UK I wouldn't say its particularly hard to get a spot, but obviously the more desirable to company the harder it is. As long as you have the minimum standards for grades etc they will then then be quite interested in things that show you are hardworking, things that show leadership and commitment. In my experience anyway the college have very little to do with it.
We had a large amount of international students but all from India and Pakistan as the college has partnerships with colleges over there. They had their own courses and classes so not mixed in with the rest of us and generally they were self funded. All cadets otherwise were from the UK as a large part of the funding comes from the UK government so only UK nationals are eligible, the companies that don't use this funding like the RFA generally require you to have UK citizenship as they are supporting the armed forces. Nationality does play a huge factor in the industry, Maersk abandoned UK cadetships last year as well only companies based in the UK really offer them now. The only company I know from SA really is AMSOL and they definitely take cadets but as you said there may be limited opportunity's. Maybe best to contact the colleges down there and ask them who they've seen take cadets. Might just be worth contacting any company that has SA flagged ships as well like the offshore diamond mining companies etc. There does seem to be a lot of SAs working on super yachts so you could work you're way up to officer from deckhand on them if that's something you would fancy.

Let's say I decided to get all my documents instead of going through school, so my question is, when I have all documents required, what are my posibity of becoming a merchant mariner sailor? I'm worried that if I get all documents necessary and willing to spend money and time to join and just to get decline. Becoming a merchant mariner Is a dream come true . Do engineers get more shore leave in port compared to the deck department? Or does everyone get the same amount of time to visit when given the chance?
Engineers tend to get more flexible times, because deck department take 4-hourly watches where as engineers do 8-5 but can cover for each other.
Engineers also have watches right? So technically engineers are working more?

If you're in the United States and are pursuing a deck career I highly recommend you look at Great Lakes Maritime Academy. That is where I attend and you graduate with pilotage. As well hearing from a lot of cadets from other maritime academies they hadn't even heard about GLMA and said they would have rather came here.
If your videos where available for my viewing pleasure 30 yrs ago I may have made it my life but a tree felling land lubber is what I became. Though I did get to operate a small (10m) tugboat for a couple years and drove crew boats for many more. Love your videos and am happy to learn that you plan on keeping up with them right through to your pilots license, when they will be deemed a security risk. Thanks Jeff
Former sailor here: I miss the high seas, the Albatross and feeling of coming to seaports. Be careful! it's a lifestyle, if you young, and you can handle being away from home. Go for it, or at least give it a shot.

All those who are planning to get into our industry must make sure it's *they* who want to do it and not the money or anything that's compelling them to. Anyway, I love myself and more than anything my career and lifestyle. Maritime is a great career choice, but that's again my personal choice!

Unfortunately I decided that this is the path for me way too late in the game. I'm a senior in high school and the classes I chose to take for the past three years were all in preparation for an entirely different career path. If I could go back in time, I'd do welding, weightlifting, carpentry, maybe even JROTC. I know I could probably still get into a martitime school if I really tried, but my grades and extracurriculars aren't stellar enough to get me any merit-based scholarships and there are no academies in my state (so... unaffordable). I wish I put more effort into my studies and figured out what I wanted to do a lot sooner.

Hey! I can't tell you from experience but what I can tell you is that I'm 34 and will be going into it next year. I emailed the maritime school here with the same concerns and the program administrator said there are quite a few "mature" students that get into it a little later in life :)
I turned 30 mid-ways into my first year in school. I have worked about 10 years in the IT industry before I decided to make the change. Comming from Norway, I had to take a 1 year pre-requisite course to get the neccessery diplomas to be eligble to apply for Nautical Science.

Hey Jeff thanks for the video. I hope you can answer a couple questions about your experience/route.
So i know you decided to go to Australian schools because of the compressed schooling time, im trying to look into the differences between doing that and going to a longer school in the US or Canada.
I understand that you previously went to a school in western Australia to become a Third Mate (or was it a Cadet and then you advanced to Third on the Ship?). But now you're back at school in Tasmania for a ten month program to get your Second Mate? My understand (for the US at least) is that getting the Third Mates license automatically qualifies you for the Second Mates license after serving on board for 360 days as a Third. Is that not the case if you get your Third Mates from Australia? Is a period of extra schooling between Third and Second Mates required in certain countries (Australia or Hong Kong/China) or by certain companies (OOCL)? Or was it your choice to go back to school?
I ask because doing a program in the US would take alteast 3 years so a shortened Australian program is appealing. But if a 1.5-2 year program in Australia only gets a Third Mates license before requiring 10 more months of schooling to advance to Second Mates the time saved doesnt seem overly worth it.

I know a 3rd mate in his 40's.. he's been an AB for so long. It will never be too late to start.
Are you in the US? All my knowledge is applicable to that, but is generally pretty even across the board. If you go to school (college) for it, it's generally a standard 4 year degree process. You graduate with a coast guard license and a Bachelor's degree. You generally go on three training cruises during the summers as well to build up your sea time. There's a handful of schools across the country (under 10) that do this and will get you everything you need to become a 3rd mate. 23 is not too old, I went to school with people just starting in their 30s and 40s. The programs are usually impacted, though, because the schools are so small and specialized. Let me know if you have any other questions.

One place that seems to be missed overlooked is the USNS or Military sealift command. They are hiring, from what I've heard, have a lock of manpower/employees. Do believe you may have to be a U.S. citizen. Check out the website for more information.

is it possible to get ANY kind of job in maritime when you are in the following situation?:
1. only high school grad 2. you are and need to be 100% independent, meaning no financial support from country or family, meaning you cant go and pay for a school because you have to continue doing some random jobs to pay rent and buy food.
2. considering the first 2 points (no qualifications and no time/money to get them) is it possible to land a job? (better than a damn janitor)

Retired US Navy. Started as a boiler tech, so if I was going to work on a ship again I would likely work in engineering. I don't think I'd need to go to school to qualify to work on a maritime ship if I already have experience on 4 different Navy ships, would I?
Video idea: I live in Halifax and have a great view of the shipping traffic coming and going from the Bedford terminal. I'd love to have an insider / informed perspective on the different design philosophies for container / RORO ships. For example what do you think are the pros / cons between a containership design vs hybrid RORO and container? And what are your thoughts on the distinctive looking 4th Gen ACL ships? And when all these ships going past my window, is there anything specifically interesting to look out for?

Hello Jeff. I've had this question for a while. I'm not interested in getting into the maritime life, but i'm curious about taking a freight ship trip, that crosses an extensive ocean and possibly a panama/suez canal. Nobody could answer me this yet (even sailors). What would be your recommendations? What do you know about this? I was told nowadays this is very hard since everyone on board are registered and you must be qualified. Or is there any hope, even if I apply for a one trip job on a freight ship.
